I was 16 when it happened, and remember reading a book about the tragedy several years later. That decades-old book didn't compare to the detail, depth, and insight of The Road to Jonestown.I won't go into the details of the story, as there are other synopses here.The lesson then, and it certainly applies today: when you listen only to one point of view, and surround yourself only with people who agree with you, you lose the ability to think for yourself. And the echo chamber becomes a trap. Whether it's religion, or politics, it's never a good idea.
This is truely a fascinating true horror story. The book is excellent in research and at the end is a list of interviews and extensive notes. I think two quotes accurately cover this tragedy "the death quickly became renowned not as a grandly defiant revolutionary gesture, but as the ultimate example of human gullibility.(p. 454)" and "Those as gifted as Jones use actual rather than imagined injustices as their initial lure- the racism and economic disparity in America that Jones cited were, and still are, real - then exaggerate the threat until followers lose any sense of perspective (p. 466)." This book also made me research many of the politicians, lawyers, and famous people who used this cult to further their own careers and nasty agendas. This non-fiction horror story is a warning tale about many of the movements and politicians today - that parallel the evil in this mass murder. This book deserves an A++++++++
I remember the headlines in 1978 about over 900 dead in Guyana , members of the Peoples Temple led by Jim Jones. I saw this book as an opportunity to learn more about this case and why and how it happened. Author Jeff Guinn has written a very detailed and interesting book and character study of Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple. As a child of disfunctional parents with a Mother who predicted great things for him, Jim Jones was an odd child that was obsessed with Religion and had a penchant for memorizing scripture as well as attending multiple religious services. From his start in Indiana to California, Brazil and eventually Guyana you are told of the growth of the church, how members were recruited, the people who were served by the church and how an organization that started with good intent, promising and promoting racial and social equality eventually crashed and burned in a mass suicide ordered by their Pastor Jim Jones. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Jones was an adulterer, controller and drug abuser who took advantage of vulnerable men, women and children, eventually killing them. This book is a cautionary tale for cults. This should be required reading for anyone considering joining an organization led by someone who demands absolute fealty and control and promises an ideal existence, it usually doesn't deliver and ends badly. Highly interesting and recommended.
I loved Guinn's books about Manson and Bonnie & Clyde, and the thorough research and vivid storytelling were as excellent as I expected.Finishing the book left me with more questions and I think this is intentional. I guess Guinn resisted tying it up this long, complicated story in a bow or diagnosing the dead. There have been many famous preachers over the years who enriched themselves, defrauded people, lied, slept with parishioners and so on. I have been watching Leah Remini's show about Scientology, and there are some parallels with that as well. But why did Jim Jones go beyond the basic narcissistic, greedy preacher and cause the deaths of almost a thousand people? He could have been a mega-church preacher with thousands of adoring fans, political influence and millions of dollars in his pocket without engaging in criminal and then deadly activity.If you are really interested in the culture of the times, you will enjoy this book and perhaps Manson even more.
The Rev Jim Jones is one of the most notorious criminals in American history. Jones was born in rural Indiana in 1931 to a World War I veteran of world War I and an eccentric and profane mouthed mother. She believed in reincarnation and envisaged great things for her unusual and charismatic son. Jones had charisma and was a great speaker and motivator. He graduated from Butler University and became the leader of the move to integrate public facilities in his hometown of Indianapolis in the 1850s. Jones became the chair of the Indianapolis Housing Commission doing a fine job. His congregation from store front to large. Jones was an evangelist who traveled widely in the Midwest for revivals. He was married to Marcelline who came from a prominently Republican family in Richmond. Indiana. The couple wed and had several children most of whom were adopted. Jones relocated the Peoples Temple to California in the early 1960s. The church prospered and Jones became a local celebrity in San Francisco. The public face of Jones portrays a dedicated minister who worked for social justice for the poor and minorities. But underneath was an evil egocentric monster! Consider:a. Jones proclaimed that he was God on earth and demanded worship from his besotted followers.b. Jones did not believe in the Biblec. Jones believed the CIA and FBI were persecuting his church and that the end of the world was coming near.d. Jones was a sex offender fathering at least one child out of wedlock. He demanded sex from his women followers and committed statutory rape.e. Jones was power mad .f. Jones often faked healings to fool the unwary often using chicken offal to think they were cancers he had exorcised from those suffering from the disease of the day. All of this evil is brought to the cold light of day by the deft pen of Jeff Guinn. He is a Texan who has written several bestselling books on the likes of Bonnie and Clyde, Charles Manson and the participants in the Gunfight at the OK Corral. I have read all of these books and all have been well written based on a great deal of oral interviews and research. Jim Jones is one of the most complicated murderers I have ever read a book about! He did much good in his life but talking his 914 followers to commit mass suicide in the jungles of Guyana on November18, 1978 is unforgivable. He himself killed himself that day by a gunshot. His followers also murdered Congressman Leo Ryan D-California who was killed at the airport near Jonestown. Ryan had arrived there to research the bad reports he had been hearing about Jones and his followers. This book is a well done true crime story that deserves a wide readership. Recommended!

I will admit that it took me at least once through this book before I was comfortable with how the rhyming was supposed to go. The words used are altered words to make it rhyme so it doesn't read naturally at first, and it seems easier to read out-loud as well. But after once through it was easier to read and my 18 month old daughter enjoys the story. I would recommend it for little kids in particular.
I love this book! It's funny and the "BIOs" in the back of the book are hysterically funny (appealing to adults) The book is hard cover with beautiful and very colorful illustrations. I first gave this book 3 stars because I thought that I was buying a board book for babies and that it wasn't appropriate for my 5 month old granddaughter but I'm taking it back! Boy was I wrong, I read it to her today and she wanted me to read it over and over again and loved the pictures. I doubt that she understood what any of it was, just that it sounded funny and she loved the bright colors!

Silly book that brings fond memories. My dad used to have all these sayings that went something like "hippopotomus did alotomous then tripped and fell on his bottomous." My dad is not around anymore, but reading this book to my son is as if he is still here. Anyway, if that over the top way of rhyming is silly to you or your kids, then this i the right book for you.
Love this book!! I am crazy about children's books and we have all the classics in our house. I was unsure about buying this book at first but I'm so glad I did! It's a every cute story with great illustrations. The book flows well with its Dr.Seuss type of rhyming. It had my husband and I both laughing. This story includes an character bio at the end of the book, every funny! Definitely add this one to your children's library, they will love it and so will you!!!
I bought this for my 4 yr old daughter for Easter. Both of my girls (my older is will be 7 soon) will enjoy reading this too :-) Very cute book, great illustrations and because we all laugh when we get hiccups in our family, it's a great book for us!
Eh. I don't like the nonsense words. I can't flow when I read to my baby. She must think I'm some sort of idiot for not being able to quickly pronounce what she assumes are normal words in a baby book. But no, it's yellowphant, elephantipede, and flosserous. Will have to gift this one to some pregnant friend before mine can start asking for re-reads.
I purchased this with my 4 year old in mind; but my 6 year old got a kick out of it too! Such a fun book! I wish it was a little longer because we were really enjoying it! (But then my 4 year old has never been one to sit for books; so shorter ones can be a good thing for us too.) Both of them liked the illustrations too.
out 2 year old has had this book and loved reading it ever since he was 10 months old. The discussion at the back of the book is better for older kids, but the rhymes are great for younger ones.

I love this book! There are people in this world who are not cynical, or "worldly". They trust and they believe that there is goodness in just about everyone….they are the ones that make the human race so wonderful! Shelly fell victim to someone that purposefully set out to deceive but did it in such a "loving way" that she was truly blindsided. It is a sad lesson in life to know that not everyone is what they seem, and that one person can love with so much abandon while the other has the complete intention of decieving, hurting and trying to destroy everything about the other. I sincerely hope that whoever reads this book does not lose their naiveté but does think twice before entering into a relationship. Great job Buffy Andrews on showing how easy it is to be manipulated and why this message needs to be shared!!
This book was quite difficult to read, due to the realism the author portrayed that was much like a life I escaped from, just barely. He had to leave me for dead before I realized that he was the worthless one, not me. I am crying as I write this, but it is incumbent upon me to let others know that this is not just fictional, but actually far too common. Please, if any of this rings bells to you about your relationship, or that of someone you know, get out and get help.If I hadn't, my children would have been motherless, and I would not have found the man I have been happily married to for 19 years. I learned that real love is about honesty, equality, communication, friendship, and so much more. Real love is not hurtful. It is rewarding and I treasure my husband, he treasures me. Please, never settle for anything less, no one should live a life of fear.As for the book, I give kudos to the author for demonstrating how narcissistic personality disorder works and how sociopathic people prey on the insecurity of others. It is a well-penned journey featuring a protagonist that is a relatable, fully-fleshed character. The antagonist was done excellently, almost frighteningly so.The supporting characters are realistic, and the plot moves well. The author was skillful in demonstrating how a sociopath will show many faces in different situations until they finally remove the mask for their prey. She also showed how they manipulate the victim to believe that they brought the series of abuses in due to "flaws", leaving the victim ever less confident.All in all, it is a very good book, and I think most readers would like it. For those who identify with it, please don't hesitate to save yourself. You are worthy of real love. If you take anything away from this, I hope it is that.As Always, I Wish Happy Reads to All from the Unapologetic Book Junkie 😉!!!
Halfway through this book and it’s a chore to keep reading. Yes, it’s a tough subject, but the writing style is what’s making me want to give up on it. It’s just so simplistic, almost like a children’s book. It read more like a “How to spot an abuser†pamphlet for high school kids, than a novel. I didn’t feel any kind of connection with the characters, or that I really knew who they were. (ETA after finishing: The ending was very sudden, too.)“Do you like this book?â€â€œNot really. I don’t like a book where every sentence, thought, and action is broken up into individual paragraphs.â€â€œLike this?â€â€œYes, like this. It’s distracting and clunky. It takes away from the seriousness of the topic.â€â€œLike a Dr Seuss book?â€â€œYes! That’s exactly it!â€They decided to order coffee and chat some more.The waiter brought coffee and they chatted some more.———-You get the idea.
I finished reading this book quite a while ago, and have been struggling with how to word my review of "The Perfect Husband", by Buffy Andrews.I love Buffy's work, and went into reading this book knowing that the subject matter was not typical of a Buffy Andrews book, and while it did touch on a subject that many people would find hard to believe, it hit me close to home.For 27 years I was married to a man who thought that he owned me. I wore what he said I could wear. I went only where he said I could go. I only talked to people that he said I could talk to...as long as he was close enough to hear the conversation...And if I did anything to displease him, there was hell to pay...The difference was, I was only 21 years old when I was swept off my feet my my "Prince Charming". I was young, naive and vulnerable.The Heroine of this book was not.Shelly was a 47 year old woman with one failed marriage under her belt, and a solid career as a Realtor, a profession that requires a great deal of cunning, intelligence and strong "people skills", and this is why I found it difficult to believe that she would have been totally blinded by the first man she met after signing up for on-line dating, or that she would have completely overlooked all of the warning signs that were there, and continued on with the relationship. And there were warning signs. Many, many warning signs. For Shelly to over look them simply because he flattered her and bought her expensive gifts made her character appear shallow, greedy and not very bright, all of which she was not.The subject matter of this book is very real, but the way the story was told, did not feel as real as it should have been. especially to those of us who have survived a relationship with a master of psychological manipulative, controlling and often violent behavior.Kudos to Buffy Andrews for venturing into a subject that is uncomfortable to talk about and so often ignored or overlooked.
Not as good as I thought it would be. Too predi table. Had Eric pegged as a control freak from Jump! What's the old saying: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Eric was too perfect, from the first date. This book creeped me out, from the first page. Mistake number one, signing up for on-line dating. Mistake two, trusting a profile, photo, and voice on the phone. Mistake three, believing "Mr Perfect's" BS; nobody's that perfect, nobody. Three strikes, you're out - of luck!

The Glass Universe meticulously delineates the previously little-known story about the contributions of a group of women hired by the Harvard College Observatory as “human computers†beginning in the mid-1800’s. While Dava Sobel at times employs incredible scientific detail while relaying these women’s stories, overall The Glass Universe is a fascinating tale of the impact of a multitude of female astronomers on the field of astronomy. As the story develops, photography begins revolutionizing the field of astronomy creating a new field called spectrophotography. Accordingly, a number of these women begin studying the thousands of glass photographic plates created nightly at the observatory in Cambridge and at times from other areas including Peru and South Africa. The images created via photography magnified the views of the cosmos to degrees far beyond what the naked eye could see even with a telescope. As a result, the women (and some men too) discovered thousands of new stars, learned what stars are composed of, and characterized stars into groupings with similar traits. Sobel also pays tribute to the individuals who funded much of this research including Anna Draper whose husband was on the forefront of spectrophotography and sadly died young, Andrew Carnegie and Catherine Bruce, a wealthy New York socialite who came to love astronomy late in life.Because so many women participated in the development of a new understanding of the cosmos, there are a tremendous number of characters in The Glass Universe. Repeatedly while reading, I kept wishing that there was a character listing at the front of the book to help me keep track of them all. When I finished the book, I was happy to ascertain that Sovel had compiled a lengthy Catalogue of Harvard Astronomers, Assistants, and Associates at the end of the book. While it was helpful to peruse this after finishing The Glass Universe, I feel it would have been more useful at the front of the book instead of after I was finished reading. At the end of the book, Sobel also includes a timeline with the highlights of the Harvard College Observatory which places many of the developments and discoveries into a coherent, satisfying format.Sobel’s story is uplifting, and I loved reading about the recognition these women received at a time when women working was highly uncommon. Not only did their fellow workers at Harvard Observatory acknowledge the success and importance of these individuals, but astronomers worldwide respected and recognized the contributions made by them. I highly recommend The Glass Universe. Thanks to Viking Books and NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Pickering and Harlow Shapley, whilenot neglecting their male contemporaries. Between the 1880s and 1910s, Harvard CollegeObservatory under Pickering arguably contributed more to the advance of astronomy than anyother single institution. By 1920 the telescopes of HCO began to be dwarfed by new large instrumentsat other institutions, but under Shapley HCO remained at the forefront of astronomical researchand education in many areas. During these years, Henrietta Leavitt discovered the Cepheid period-luminosityrelation that would be vital to determining the distances to other galaxies, Annie Jump Cannon studied the spectraof hundreds of thousands of stars, and Cecilia Payne pioneered methods for determining the chemicalcomposition of the stars. These and other stories are followed in Sobel's fascinating work.Sobel also writes of the lives and motivations of the wealthy sponsors of the observatory'sresearch, including scientifically minded women such as Anna Palmer Draper and Catherine WolfeBruce. Considering the breadth of the book, I noticed remarkably few errors, and I stronglyrecommend its story of the people of HCO and their science.
I was hoping for more from this book considering it was a 2017 New York Times Notable book than what I got. The book does describe the contributions of the many women who worked at the Harvard Observatory from the late 1800s to the early 1950s. Those contributions were significant. (Even though they were grossly underpaid for what sure seems like scut work to me.) And it was nice to see women get an opportunity in a technical field during that era. So, yes, Sobel does a good job of describing their contributions. But her narrative is on the dry side. I'm a big astronomy fan so I liked this book. But I think if you are coming at this book from the "women in science" viewpoint rather than from the science viewpoint, you're going to find this history a little tedious. Recommended for science and astronomy buffs. Recommended with reservations (for the dry narrative) for others.
This well researched book came as a revelation to me about the many women to whom we owe our modern understanding of astronomy. Dava Sobel makes the individual women and men come alive on the page. She also writes so that the lay person gains a sense of the way discoveries were made and why they were important.
