This book is probably the most disturbing I have read thus far. I must say I am not sure I could have endured all she did and kept going, I would have caved in. Her innocence was lost at a tender age of not understanding and the fear she encountered at that time as well affected her entire life and it was sad! No one on earth should ever have to live in fear like that and the most disturbing for me was not just the sexual abuse but her Mother!!!!

Reading this book was a sad experience and made me think of my own childhood. I wish her the best and hope she reconciles with her children . My oldest son has not talked to me over 20 years after my husband died i realized how much his father poisoned him against me. I too don't give up as life is so short. May the peace of our Lord lift is up

This book shows tremendous strength. She has been through so much and still standing. What a remarkable woman. I too was abused as a child from the age of 3 or 4 to 16 years old. People don't understand the impact that has on your life. It can make you a stronger person or destroy you. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations to Cassie for finally living her life. I pray her children will come out of their fathers home with minimal scars. I am sickened by her step father and mother and the fact that they went unpunished for their evil crimes against all of their children. I also hope that all the sisters may somehow reconnect and may have a relationship in the future. It's amazing how people can't drive without proving themselves able yet anyone can have children and no one questions it until either it's to late or until someone is already suffering. Good luck in your future Cassie and thanks for sharing your story.

Good book about a young girl who was abused and as her life went on, she seemed to choose those who would continue the verbal and physical abuse until finally she was encouraged to help herself.

This book is so sad. I kept thinking "Why doesn't she give up on him?" But then, what would I do in each of her traumatic experiences. While it was immensely tragic, it was so well written. She surely was the most abused person I ever knew of in my lifetime. So many years wasted for her hoping always to get someone to love her. I wish her all the best and hope all the children will understand someday and give her all the love she deserves.

When you hear this woman tell her story you are there with her and feeling things as if it were you. When she struggles to believe that "he won't do it again",albeit her step father or a husband, you want to reach out and set her free. Amazing Cassie.

I choose I high rating cause this book hit home with me. I would recommend this book to everyone. Cassie's story is something that many women and men go through hopefully reading her story will inspire you to speak up for yourself.

Changing the Game: The Parent's Guide to Raising Happy, High Performing Athletes, and Giving Youth Sports Back to our Kids, by John O'Sullivan

Review

The future of our children in sports lies in the hands of parents, coaches, and themselves. This book provides tools and tips to accelerate positive youth development experiences, as well as critical life lessons along the way.Changing the Game serves as a powerful guide for both parents and coaches who want kids to have fun, enjoyable, and meaningful youth sporting experiences. The 7 Cs section is a must-read for every coach and parent. Many of the lessons and values in this book are timeless and will make a significant impact for everyone involved in youth sports.  I highly recommend it! ---John Ballantine, president and co-founder, KIDS in the GAME, www.kitg.orgChanging the Game is, well, a game changer. It explores in both depth and breadth the youth sports experience, its blood, sweat, and tears. Any parent who wants their children to gain the physical, psychological, emotional, and social benefits of what sport has to offer (and isn’t that every parent!) better read this book. It will make you a better sports parent, and it will ensure that your children get all the good stuff and avoid most of the bad stuff from participating in sports. ---Jim Taylor, Ph.D., author of Positive Pushing: How to Raise a Successful and Happy ChildNobody cares more about the integrity of youth sports than John O’Sullivan. . .and that is reflected in his great new book, Changing the Game. ---Dan Saferstein, Ph.D., author of Win or Lose: A Guide to Sports Parenting and Strength in You: A Student-Athlete’s Guide to Competition and LifeI would like to commend John O’Sullivan for this thoughtful and detailed work. I firmly believe that the youth sport experience for a child is shaped as powerfully by their parents or guardians involvement. That involvement by definition is neither a good nor bad thing. Rather the importance of that involvement needs to be appreciated and then it needs to be intelligently managed. In this book John gives practical and helpful guidance to elevating the experience of the children in youth sports by directly addressing the role of the parent or guardian. I think this book helps the ongoing challenge of making youth sports fun and safe as well as somewhere talent can be developed whatever the level. ---Ian Barker, Director of Coaching of Education, National Soccer Coaches Association of AmericaChanging the Game is full of practical, insightful information that is good for parents and coaches alike. ---Tim Schulz, president and CEO, Rush SoccerParenting an athlete is not as simple as it used to be. John O’Sullivan has clearly and professionally illuminated this challenging path with both research and common-sense advice. This book will help your athlete reach their full potential and allow you to be part of their good memories. ---Bruce Brown, founder of Proactive Coaching LLC and author of Teaching Character through Sport and Proactive LeadershipAs the youth sports landscape has changed over the years, it has left parents oftentimes grasping for air at what to do to help their kids succeed. In my work with younger athletes, it is necessary to devote some of the time to the parents so they can help their kids to improve their mindset, focus, and confidence. As I read John’s book, each chapter reminded me specifically of several of my current and former athletes, what they were going through, and their parents’ role in the process. Changing the Game is a wonderful resource for parents to help their young athletes succeed in sports and life, and I can’t recommend it enough ---Brian Baxter, director, Sport Psychology Institute Northwest, and author of The Sports Mindset Gameplan: An Athlete’s Guide to Building and Maintaining ConfidenceJohn O’Sullivan’s approach to parenting high-performing athletes is insightful, comprehensive, and effective. He provides practical and relevant principles that can improve communication and understanding between parent and child. His approach helps foster growth and strengthen core family values; most importantly it reminds parents that organized sports is supposed to be fun. Changing the Game is a must read for parents who want to take an interactive role in raising confident and well-rounded athletes. ---Albert Oppedisano, Psy.D, author of Education and Empowerment for the 21st Century ParentChanging the Game offers invaluable insights into the reality of the youth sports world and the critical impact that parents have to make or break their kids’ experience in sports. John O’Sullivan’s thoughtful approach and guidance is spot on and just what we parents and coaches need to help our kids thrive on a field, on a team, and in the game of life! ---Brian Grossman, co-founder of KIDS in the GAMEThank you to John O’Sullivan for providing a wonderful resource to parents of athletes. With such a changing climate of youth sports today, this book provides a guide for parents that brings the focus back on what is truly important for a child participating in sports. ---Angela Hucles, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and founder of the Empowerment Through Sport Leadership SeriesChanging the Game should be required for all youth sports parents. This guide offers ways for youth sports organizations to make sure that no child walks around with a hole in their heart. If youth sports organizations implemented this book within their educational efforts we would perhaps see more children involved in athletics beyond the age of fourteen! ---Vince Ganzberg, U.S. Soccer National Staff Instructor and co-founder of GK Project

My oldest son plays football, basketball and baseball, while my younger son is almost old enough to follow his brother down the road of youth sports. I wouldn't have purchased this book unless I was troubled by what I've experienced, both as the father of an athlete, a former athlete, and a youth basketball coach myself. This book should be required reading for all coaches and parents of young athletes, regardless of their involvement level. The truth is that adults are ruining sports for the kids. I find myself way too invested in my son's sports life, and I'm a very mild sports dad by most comparisons. I don't yell or make his athletics the center of our relationship, but I knew I was doing something wrong when my son really started to push back on letting me help him at home, even though I'm his coach. After reading this I have a much different perspective and so does my son.I'll give you one example of something I learned from this book:I stopped watching his practices. Yes, I'm there, but I don't sit and watch him anymore. I usually take a book and sit in the car or find something to do at the park. When I used to watch him, he was quiet and reserved on the practice field, even though I know he's a good leader on game day. I recently snuck up on a practice and watched for a good 30 minutes during baseball season. I was amazed to hear my son was such a vocal team leader. I'd never even seen that side of him before. He was telling the other fielders to shift, encouraging his teammates, etc. I was blown away. All this time I've treated practice like something that demands my full attention, and I was holding him back from being a leader. Needless to say, it re-enforced the main theme of the book. - Let your kids control their own sports lives, and you'll see them unlock their full potential, all while having fun and getting better. So coaches and parents, the time has come when we have to realize that we've gone too far. We've stolen youth sports from the youth. We just need to be there to make sure they're not hungry and not injured. We just need to be their fan base, not their agents.

This book should be required reading for every parent and coach that has a child participating in youth sports. As a youth coach who also coaches his own son I struggle at times with many of the things that are discussed in this book. John addresses all of those issues and many more in a well-written easy to understand manner.

I have been that crazy parent on the sidelines, talking through the game on the ride home. My daughter started to express burn out and not having fun. I realized I needed a new perspective on parenting and sports. This book has helped me so much. I now go to the games and just enjoy them and my daughter is now more confident and having fun again. I highly recommend this book.

As a long time coach and trainer, it pains me sometimes to see how youth athletics has devolved to it's current state i.e. year round play, too much emphasis on winning at all costs, no joy in the play, way over the top parents in all aspects, etc. This book provides a sound blueprint on how to change all of that and it starts from the bottom up with the parents getting a grip on reality. Youth athletics is supposed to be about the kids and creating an environment that encourages life long play and enjoyment of movement. The current state of the game does anything but that and this book provides a path out of that madness.

I would recommend this book to all parents who have kids in any sport. If you were an extremely competitive youth sports nut and you now have a child with a lot of the same characteristics you REALLY need to read this book. This book will give you answers to things you have already encountered or are going to encounter. This is the closest thing you will find to a sports parent manual. Reading this book could also save you a lot of money by getting you as a parent to see the light that you don't need to make every single off season tournament, camp, etc. The book also reminds a parent what values you want your kid to learn from sports that are transferrable to their adult life. Changing the Game covers a lot of ground and is a must read for any sport parent to help you make good decisions for your athlete and your family.

This is a great book and should be read by all. I just wish the clubs and leagues who promote this book and claim the ideas would ACTUALLY follow through. Maybe if more coaches and parents read this book and didn't settle for lip service on the ideas youth sports would be better.

Very helpful book. My husband and I just wanted to know how to be good supporters of our son in competitive soccer. This book has helped us to be more relaxed in navigating our son's sports choices. We now know what not to say to our son before and after games. I wish every soccer parent could read this book. It's weird because I went from that mom who hoots for goals to just being a more quiet sideline watcher.

Love, love, love this book! The relationship with my 10 year old soccer player has suffered thanks to my behavior and the stress and pressure I have placed on him. You get so caught up in the "game" that you don't realize what you are doing to your child. At the end of the day you have a child that hates the sport and resents you. The author provides the big picture as well detailed behaviors and techniques everyone can pattern to avoid that negative outcome.
