The Big Bad Wolf, by James Patterson

From Publishers Weekly

In a recent column in Entertainment Weekly, Stephen King cited Patterson's thrillers as the example of "dopey" bestsellers. We hope that doesn't mean that those who enjoy them are dopes, because this new one is vastly entertaining. Alex Cross, Patterson's black lawman hero, has left the D.C. police force for the FBI. But Cross was a star cop, so when the Bureau becomes aware that attractive white women are disappearing at an unusually high rate in the nation's capital, Cross, despite still being in training at Quantico, is brought onto the case and is personally mentored by the Bureau's director, earning the ire of some Feds but the support of others. Behind the disappearances is a sexual slavery operation run as a sideline by one of the more believable and most compellingly evil villains in the Patterson universe, the Wolf, a mysterious former KGB man who's now the world's top mobster. The narrative throughout is swift and varied, as Patterson cuts among the diabolical schemes of a Russian magnate who may be the Wolf, the plight of several kidnap victims, the dogged pursuit by Cross and company of the Wolf, and the hideous designs of the members of an encrypted computer chat room who pay the Wolf fortunes to snatch women who fit their fantasies. And there's domestic drama, too, as the mother of Cross's young son, Alex, decides that she wants her boy back. Full of plot surprises and featuring a balanced mix of intrigue, hard action and angst, the novel, on which Patterson notably does not share cover credit, grips from start to finish. The Alex Cross series remains Patterson's finest, and this is the finest Cross in years. Maybe we're dopes, but we're smiling ones.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Alex Cross finally took the plunge at the end of Four Blind Mice (2002) and joined the FBI. The training is a little beneath Cross, who has spent years working with the FBI on the toughest cases, but he dutifully attends classes until he's pulled out to consult on a case. Wealthy women have been disappearing around the country. The latest, a judge's wife, was snatched at a shopping mall. It appears these women (and soon several young men as well) are being abducted and sold to people who have "selected" them and paid a hefty sum. The man behind it all is a Russian known only as the Wolf. Cross gets a break when one of the buyers releases the woman he paid to have abducted, but when they track him down, they find he's committed suicide. Then a major bombshell in his personal life distracts Cross from the case: his ex-girlfriend Christine, the mother of his youngest son, has reappeared, and she wants custody. Cross' first major case with the FBI will have readers on the edge of their seats, swiftly turning the pages to the exciting showdown. Kristine HuntleyCopyright © American Library Association. A former KGB agent, so good he at being invisible, has set up an organization catering to rich kidnapping very specific individuals per the clients request,s.The client is willing to purchase a specific person and the organization provides the purchase.People are being kidnapped across the country.Alex Cross, now working for the FBI cris-crosses the country chasing suspects, gathering evidence and psychological information on the head of the organization. After breaks in the case are developed and followed and eventually arrested. It turns out that he is another ploy the mastermind has created and the incidents are becoming an international event.Another well written novel by this author, that is detailed, procedurally correct , and keeps the readers attention to the point of not wanting to put the book down.

James Patterson's, The Big Bad Wolf is a winner. Once you begin reading this fine novel, you have difficulty in putting it down. Alex also finds himself in a bind when his x-girl friend shows up with her attorney, for she wants custody in their son! She was once the principal where Alex's children attend school. Now she has moved to Seattle, WA. Alex's other lady, an San Francisco homicide detective, gives Alex comfort. Alex is with the FBI and is in training classes while also working on assignments. Needless to say, Alex is traveling up and down the east coast trying to find the Wolf. It seems the Wolf is always one step ahead of law enforcement. FBI is joined by the CIA to try and find him. Or is it a "her?" Read it and enjoy! DP, Castro Valley, CA. Rated R. Violence! Very descriptive bloody scenes. Strong language.

I picked this book up for a readers' advisory class, so I'll keep my review along those lines. This is an Alex Cross novel, definitely not the first, though. Alex Cross is entering the FBI academy after years in the Washington D.C. police department. The novel is long, but each chapter is about 3 or so pages, and the author doesn't waste any time on description. It's all action, which keeps the book moving at a fast pace but sacrifices a feeling of depth - there's really no time to get to know the characters, or really to build up the suspense and thrill of a longer chase. Still, it's an exciting storyline and has some "slice-of-life" moments where you get to see the main character's family life a little bit. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fast-paced thriller, a quick read, a book about solving crime, catching the bad guy, kidnappings and action. I will say, the novel ends on a cliffhanger, so be prepared for an unsatisfying ending.

Another Alex Cross book, and this one keeps you glued to the pages. It's a terrifying trail of kidnapped bodies that were bought for dark, dark pleasures. And this is Cross's first case at the FBI when he is still supposed to be in training. He's trying to figure out his place, this case, and keep his family together. I enjoyed this story, as I am enjoying every Cross book. Cross feels and acts like a real person, and maybe that's why I can relate to his story. It's not just about the case, but the thoughts and feelings, and the ability of profiling that keeps me reading Patterson's work on Cross (among his other stories).

I swear, what happened to James Patterson?! He just took a beloved series and turned it into something else. He was nearly on the right course of the "Four Blind Mice" putting it back on track. But this one just throws right back off.Okay, positives. I do like that Alex is a FBI agent now. It opens the door for new challenges and new tougher villains for him to take on. But sadly, it doesn't happen (which we will get to later on in the negatives). I really love that we get more of Kayla Coles from the previous novel. I'm just loving that character. And I will admit, the Mastermind cameos are pretty memorable. But the negatives are just way to high for me to like this novel. The villain is no good and the fact that Alex is taking on criminal organizations that the CIA or even James Bond would handle just doesn't fit the universe of the series. We could have seen Alex face off against new kinds of criminals that are worse and see him go through some life changing decisions. Christine Johnson returns in this novel and how she returns just freaking ticks me off. This is not the Christine I remember from the past novels before "Roses Are Red". In fact, I'm starting to hate her character now. I still can't get into Alex and Jamilla's romance. Even the ending when they say "I love you" to each other, I don't believe it for one second. I still like Jamilla as a character, but I seriously don't like the romance. This has got to be the dark ages for Alex Cross. I mean it! "Cat & Mouse" was the early stages of it. "Roses Are Red" and "Violets Are Blue" officially made it happen. And now we have "The Big Bad Wolf" keeping it that way.

I am a great fan of all James Patterson books. But my favorites contain the detective/psychologist Dr. Cross. Alex Cross is again the main detective in "Big Bad Wolf" when Cross joins the FBI. I love the crime mysteries and also that you get to know Alex Cross and his family which is something I look forward to in each of the books he is featured in. There is Mamma-grandma who raised Alex and then his two small children as well, who have lost their mother. With each novel Cross finds time for a new love interest but it never gets in the way of his crime solving addiction aided by some police and FBI mates. Solving crimes is what Alex Cross is about and the tougher the criminal and the more unsolvable a case appears the more he is determined to solve it. The police and FBI colleagues you get to know as well as his family make you feel like you know them all. I think I've read almost every Patterson novel where Alex Cross is at the center of crime solving, but that's not to say I like his other books any less. I just like, for now, the blend of family, their involvement, and police and FBI friends you get to know. You wonder how he does it. You will try, but won't be able to solve the crimes Alex is assigned. Page turners, all of them. Thank you James Patterson.

The 2016 United States presidential race will likely go down in history as a black eye for the country. Never has the country seemed more divided. More people, it seems, are voting AGAINST their least preferred candidate as opposed to voting FOR a particular person. These sentiments, of course, bring out the worst in some people, and we’ve all heard those with temperaments of a 16-year-old spoiled brat spat things such as “If (candidate I hate) becomes President, then I’M moving to Canada!” Well, if you happen to be one of those pessimistic grouches that want to trade the stars and stripes for the red and white maple leaf, author Andre Dubroc has just the book for you. This book is meant to be a joke (i.e. you’ll find it in the ‘Humor’ section of your local bookstore). It is, at times, hilarious. I found myself literally laughing out loud many times. Beneath all of this humor, however, is actually a very practical guide. The first couple of chapters of this book, for example, really educates the uninformed novice exactly how to move to Canada. It’s not exactly an easy thing to do. It ain’t like moving across town (if you’ve ever actually moved across town, you know that THAT is not actually easy either. Remember all of the forms you had to sign in the realtor’s office?), and for every real step that one must take to accomplish their relocation, Dubroc manages to add wit and humor within his actual instructions. After Dubroc teaches us all of the steps that are actually involved in relocating to another country (and there are quite a few), he then teaches us about Canadian food, nomenclature, habits, and overall attitudes. We learn that, just like in the United States, people in Canada are diverse, and stereotypes are applied to those indigenous to their particular province. Again, this is a humor book, and these descriptions are probably somewhat true, if probably not a bit broad. We’re guilty of this in the U.S. as well. We’re likely to characterize a truck driver from Mississippi much differently than a professor that lives in Vermont. I should also point out that the author seems to have something against Quebec. Hopefully, most Quebeccians (???) have a sense of humor. With a French name like “Andre Dubroc” you might think that the author is actually from Canada, or has some roots there, but he’s actually from Louisiana.Although this book is peppered with a few swear words, it’s a far cry from the vitriolic diatribes of such hate filled mongers such as a George Carlin or a Bill Maher. This book is also mainly apolitical. Yes, the author takes some shots at the political extreme, but he seems to hit both sides with equal aim. He seems to realize that humor is at its best when it’s not so hate-filled.This book is designed to be, and is, a quick read. Like a lot of humor books, it contains some page filler such as coloring pages to color your favorite Canadians and “word searches” where you can complete a puzzle at the end of the chapter reviewing the new words that you’ve just learned. I found the author to be quite gifted, however, and being that this is his first book, I would love to see more by him. I’m willing to bet that if he had a nice chunk of time to work with, he could actually produce a much more detailed body of work. Since, as mentioned, this book actually contains real tips, I wouldn’t limit this author’s potential to only humor. This guy has some real talent with the written word.If you happen to come across this book and the 2016 election Presidential contest has already come and gone, don’t fret and think that this book is no longer relevant. I’m sure in the days to come, we’ll have plenty of other elections and episodes of grumpiness that will cause many to shout that they will soon change their place of residence. So a book like this will always come in handy.

The Author sounds like He is an expatriate American. He understands the types of Americans that are seeking relocation to Canada and sums most of us up rather hilariously. He also, at the same time, includes very necessary information, right down to the form numbers, needed to start and finish the immigration process. How to get a job, lists of what bring, local colloquialisms, and the difference in taxes are all explained. Best of all is the explanation for Canadian society. The key is co. Co-operation with each other, not be individualistic, the word is not me in Canada, but we.

Whether you actually want to move to Canada or just like to threaten to move this is the book for you. It answers questions you didn't know you needed to ask in a way that doesn't make you feel too stupid and gives you fun activities when you start to become overwhelmed by the tasks ahead. A thoroughly entertaining and illuminating read.

So many rated the book as hilariously funny. It did make me smile a couple times but it's certainly far from hilarious. It had some good tips for those that might be seriously considering moving to Canada but there was also some comments that if they thought he was serious would get a bad view of our country. He mentions some terms that you should never say in Canada. I've lived here all my life and hadn't heard of most of them.

Hilarious. There is some good information here, but I read it with absolutely no intention of moving to Canada (quite happy here in Australia thanks very much) and enjoyed it. Andre (Quebecois perhaps?) has a gift with words, and it was a pleasure to read the jibes and jokes. Easy to read in one sitting, I recommend it if you're looking to learn more about Canada or if you just want a light, run read.

It was billed as humorous, yet was totally lacking in humor. It seemed to be more of veiled diatribe in an attempt to keep folks from the States in the States.

A welcome handbook for those who think immigration is simple. Emigration (leaving your country of citizenship), at least from Western democracies, is far easier than immigration (moving legally into a new country). The key concept here is "legal". Other countries have a much more literal view of their immigration law than many US-born Americans imagine.

As a pouty American, I have often thought of leaving the states and living a peaceful existence dangling fish lines through a hole in the ice while boiling down 40 gallons of maple sap into 1 gallon of syrup. We are close enough to the border to visit often but are too lazy to begin the multi-year process of leaving our ice bound home. Thoroughly enjoyed the humor. Hope to see you all in Florida this winter.
