Getting into homeopathic pillsI use lots of hylands so this book will help me.Saw it at the health food storeHere about 50 % cheaper

I had trouble deciding between this book and Miranda Castro's "The Complete Homeopathy Handbook". I ended up buying both and they are both good books on Homeopathy to have in your library. They each offer some basic information on Homeopathy as an introduction and each adds some information the other book does not contain. My review is basically showing how the two books differ in format to help one decide if they only buy one. Again, I really love both books and I am glad I have them both.Hershoff's book contains pictures or charts of the different systems such as circulatory, etc, with different parts of the body and ailments pinpointed and six remedies related to that image; types of pain and diagrams of headaches and the remedy for a specific headache location . The next section contains a list of 101 ailments with a brief description and six most commonly used remedies listed. Each remedy has a brief list of symptoms like a mini Materia Medica to help select the remedy. Castro's book on the other hand is laid out like a Materia Medica listing both External (cremes, ointments, etc.) and Internal remedies. The Materia Medica portion is more extensive than with Hershoff's book and with the Hershoff book I find my self consulting my actual Materia Medica book for more information. Castro's Materia Medica portion is followed by a repertory guide of symptoms and modalities to help find the correct remedy. Both books discuss how to prescribe and use dosage in giving a remedy. Castro's book gives a small chart about dosage in the beginning of her book, while the Hershoff book lists a dosage recommendation along with each ailment. Castro's book provides a sample repertorising chart with some sample cases to help one learn how to take a case and find the correct remedy.I hope this provides some information on how both books are laid out and which one best fits your approach. The Hershoff book is more basic by seeing the ailment and the recommended remedy. The Castro book is more like working with a Materia Medica and this takes more work and is not for someone wanting a quick solution. I prefer using the Materia Medica approach and that is why with Hershoff's book I still go further by consulting the Materia Medica for more information.Again both books have information not contained in the other book so you will learn something by owning both of them.

People are always stating things like "nonsense" or trying to preach how it is simply 'sugar pills' or 'placebo'. I can state that my family is very conservative and believes in going to doctors. They believe that medicine heals and honestly didn't so much question the medicine since it was considered 'medicine'. Alot of quotes, I know.Yet, despite all criticism and disbelief: - My wife of 12-years *now* has a working treatment for her post-menstrual migraines which occur monthly. Three globules under the tongue and within 10-minutes the headache is gone. Every month, like clockwork. - My children have not been in to the doctor's office due to illness in 2-years now. After beginning homeopathic treatment we removed my son from daily Omeprazole(Prilosec) - which is a common treatment for recurring ear infections and the usual stomach issues. Homeopathic treatment cured him of constant ear infections. - My son was also being treated for MRSA (inside the ear) which is contracted in the hospital at birth. The first two-years of his life he had been prescribed 49 rounds of antibiotics which never cured the MRSA. He had 3-sets of ear tubes, adenoids removed, and one additional 5th surgery to attempt a cleaning and clearing of the MRSA. Our ENT doctor (ear nose and throat), the pediatric doctor, family doctor, and even St. Jude's top doctors could not cure the MRSA. My poor child has lost hearing in his ear and we are simply praying that he doesn't have any long-term damage that will show up in the future - to his kidneys, liver, etc. (All due to the antibiotics)** I began researching homeopathy and within two-weeks my son's MRSA was cured. His ears stopped draining, his pain stopped, and the child - for the first time in his life could hear my voice without sounding as if he was underwater. I hold homeopathy with the highest honor possible - it saved my child's life. The ENT doctor's have since began using the very treatment I used on my son and are publishing results. It treats colds, flu, allergies, congestion, MRSA, bacterial infections, and I even saved my newest dog of Parvo with it. (Not because we didn't vaccinate - this is another story...)*** A pug was dropped off at the local shelter and the family simply didn't want it they said... We adopted the dog 3-days later and he was vaccinated again for everything (since noone was sure if he was ever vaccinated in his lifetime). The pug is 8-months old. We brought him home and within 24-hours he was vomiting profusely, terrible diarrhea, and lethargy. A visit to the vet resulted in them finding worms in the fecal sample - likely caught from the animal shelter. They dewormed the dog and we brought it back home with the idea he would be much better the next day. * Day 2: The dog is in worse shape than the day before. Called the vet and they want the dog brought in again as he should have been recovering and back to his old self at least 50% of the way after the shot of de-wormer and anti-nausea provided. They realize something else is wrong and run a distemper/parvo test. Distemper was negative but parvo was positive. How can this be? Apparently, parvovirus takes 4-5 days to incubate and show symptoms. Additionally, it may not show up on tests until that time. Our guess is the previous owners never vaccinated the dog and he was exposed to parvo upon being dropped at the shelter. The timeline fits, now we have a new pup with parvo. The vet offers 3 options: Euthanize, provide just support (fluids) hope he gets better, or throw everything at it and treat him with Tamiflu and other meds.We opted for the third but 36-hours later he was just as bad, if not worse. Between the worms and parvo - his intestinal tract was in terrible shape and simply wasn't going to make it....Day 4 (PM): So I begin researching and beg the vet to let me visit him and give it another 48-hours. My family visited the dog and to the veterinarian's (near-laughing response to homeopathic suggestion) I gave the dog a high dose of homeopathic treatment for the bacterial infection (possible sepsis) and for the parvovirus (flu treatment) - as well as a third-dose for the diarrhea and vomiting.Day 5 (AM): Veterinarian calls and states that his diarrhea has stopped, still has not eaten but was keeping down water. Appeared to be in better spirits and despite all odds - honestly looks like he's recovering. I come in and repeat the doses once again.Day 6 (AM): Veterinarian releases the dog to us after he had eaten and had a bowel movement. That was two-weeks ago and our healthy little pug is happy to be here with us. Homeopathy saved his life. Now those are two ridiculously long stories but they all come to a point. Homeopathic medicine works and people honestly don't have to believe it. I just ask they try it - try it and see. Then make your judgement. On to this book: This book is excellent! I am always referring to this book and Andrew Lockie's Family Guide - these are two of the best homeopathic books out there. If you own a homeopathic book - this is the one for you.***Another note: It's not necessarily homeopathic but we have also treated multiple staph infections within family or recommended to friends - all with 100% effective results - with Manuka Honey (16+) - for external staph infections on the skin - Manuka honey can provide a cure within 48-hours. (Sadly this didn't work with my son since his was deep within his neck - but on the skin, don't use antibiotics as a first treatment. Use Manuka Honey first - if it doesn't work, then use antibiotics.I hope someone finds this information useful and I wish you all the best of luck.

I've purchased at least 3 copies of this book. This is my go-to guide for my homeopathic remedy kit, and although we have many books on the subject, this is by far the easiest one to follow. With it, I've gotten wonderful results time and time again for many years now. I finally got an extra copy to keep at my parent's house so I'll have it there when I visit.

This self-help book is a MUST-HAVE for anyone who wants to greatly improve their physical AND emotional or mental health!!! It is excellent for newcomers to homeopathy as well as seasoned users. There is NO better homeopathic guide for daily study and use. I have used it for my entire large family for over 10 years and have seen great cures and miracles. It's easy to understand and very eloquently written. Don't forget this book for any health ailment such as colds, flu, stomach ulcers, impotence, depression, anxiety, headaches both acute or chronic, emphysema, hay fever, low self-esteem, menopause, etc, etc.!!!! Thank-you, Dr. Hershoff !!!!

I'm new to homeopathy; I only plan to use it to help keep my family healthy, and I find this book very user-friendly. Sometimes it is hard to pick out the perfect remedy, but this book definitely helps narrow it down. It is so rewarding to see results with homeopathy!

We've been using this for about 2 years. I liked it so much that I got it on kindle so I'd have it on the go which is where I need it half the time. It's super easy to use and really hasn't steered us wrong yet. Even my 11 year old can read through a page and figure out what he thinks he needs.

Amazon.com Review

Charming Billy is a devastating account of the power of longing and lies, love's tenacity, and resignation's hold. Even at his funeral party, Billy Lynch's life remains up for debate. This soft-spoken, poetry lover's drinking was as legendary among his Queens, New York, family and friends as was his disappointment in love. But the latter, as his cousin Dennis knows, "was, after all, yet another sweet romance to preserve." After World War II, both young men had spent one sun-swept week on Long Island, renovating a house and falling in with two Irish sisters--nannies to a wealthy family--"marveling, marveling still, that this Eden was here, at the other end of the same island on which they had spent their lives." By the end of their idyll, Billy and Eva were engaged, though she was set to return to County Wicklow. Determined to earn enough money to bring her, her family, and if necessary her entire village back to the U.S., Billy took two jobs, one of which would indenture him for years. But despite the money he sent, Eva never returned, and then was suddenly dead of pneumonia. The true tragedy is that she had simply kept her fare and married someone else--a secret Dennis keeps for the next 30 years as he watches Billy fall into a loveless marriage and the self-administered anesthesia of alcohol. Alice McDermott's quiet, striking novel is a study of the lies that bind and the weight of familial wishes. She seems far less interested in the shock of revelation than in her characters' power to live through personal disaster. As Dennis's daughter pieces together Billy's real history, she also learns of the accommodations her own family had long made--and discovers that good intentions can be as destructive as the truth they mean to hide.

From Library Journal

When Billy, the glue of a tight Irish community in New York, dies as a result of lifelong alcohol abuse, mourners gather around roast beef and green bean amandine to tell tales and ruminate on his struggle for happiness after he lost his first love, Eva. With carefully drawn character studies and gentle probing, McDermott, who won the National Book Award for this work, masterfully weaves a subtle but tenacious web of relationships to explore the devastation of alcoholism, the loss of innocence, the daily practice of love, and the redeeming unity of family and friendship. Charming Bill has some of the most beautiful writing I've read in a long time. I marked numerous passages, especially one crystalline paragraph that summed up all the joys and sorrows of life so beautifully it practically made me weep. It is an Irish Catholic elegy for a post-war generation and individual lives and marriages that crashed on the shoals of alcoholism, unrequited love, and the limits of the American Dream. Not five stars because it got quite repetitive by the end and I saw every major plot development coming from a mile or five away. You have to love literary fiction to love this book and the be willing to let the flow of the language carry you along through lives that are made up more of daily joys and sorrows than great events.

Alice McDermott's novels take a deep long look at a character sharing his/her love, hopes, desires, failures. We view "the typical course [of love] from early infatuation to serious love to affection, occasionally diminshed by impatience and disagreement, bolstered by interdependence, fanned now and then by fondness, by humor."[p 45]Here she takes on "Billy [who] had drunk himself to death. He had at some point, ripped apart, plowed through, as alcoholics tend to do, the great, deep, tightly woven fabric of affection that was some part of the emotional life, the life of love, of everyone in the room."[p 4] The "everyone in the room" here is a tavern where a lunch is served after Billy's funeral.Billy's life is told by the daughter of Dennis one of Billy's cousins - the one most responsible for helping him through his life and for helping Billy's wife, Maeve, through life. "Billy was for me then merely one of my father's legion of cousins, distinguished not so much by his alcoholism (it had seemed to me that there were more alcoholics among them than there were Republicans, or even redheads)" [p 42]. Billy was indeed charming - everyone loved him and made allowances for him.[SPOILER ALERT]The pivotal moment in Billy's life - at least as viewed by his extended family - took place shortly after World War II. Dennis and Billy are out on Long Island working on a cottage owned by Dennis' mother's second husband. While at the beach one day they meet a couple of Irish girls. Billy falls in love with one, but she returns to Ireland. Billy sends her money hoping to bring her back. But she stays in Ireland and marries a man there. Dennis finds out. Trying to spare Billy's feelings, and trying to save Billy from years of gossip and talk, Dennis tells Billy the girl died. Billy eventually marries another woman, the plain Maeve, but he may still carry a flame for the Irish girl. What course did this lie set Billy on? Would he have been an alcoholic anyway? How would his life have been different? As Dennis and another cousin, Dan Lynch, discuss the matter Dennis tries to close off that avenue of thought. "It might have been his natural disinclination to wholeheartedly agree with Dan Lynch about anything. It might have been his reluctance to consider the possibility that the lie he'd told Billy all those years ago was not merely the cause of thirty years of pointless grief but the very thing that had made Billy's life with Maeve possible, and fruitless."[p 193][END SPOILER ALERT]I especially like McDermott's point of view telling this story. She starts with a few conversations between family members at the gatherings just after the death but in a blink switches back in time to the events being discussed. It's also interesting to hear the story told of a man who had just died - we can't see his point of view because he is gone. We see the life through the eyes of others.I thoroughly enjoy Alice McDermott's studies on life and love. While this book is excellent, if you want to start with her try Someone.

Almost as many 1 star reviews as 5 stars? For this book? I've looked up other National Book Award winners (as this book is) and saw that this is a recurring trend with Amazon book reviews: win an award and watch the negative reviews pile up. As for the book itself, I found it to be a moving story of family ties and the devastation of alcoholism. Alice McDermott is a very good writer and the book is full of quiet, lyrical passages like this one: "the dead were there with them, just outside the circle of light. Billy and Claire, not forgotten, no less mourned, but silent, for now, in dreams their faces always turned away, so that the course of other lives, the lives of those they loved, could be completed, could go on. Surely just as the Irish girl, whom Billy had loved when he was young, just back from the war, had eventually turned her face away." I would recommend this book to anyone to read. While it is a quiet character study full of talk and reminiscense, if anyone says that nothing happens in the book, all I can say is it does if you understand it.

That Night by Alice McDermott stayed with me for years after I read it, and I think I will think about Charming Billy for a while, too. The story's narrator is a tangential witness to the main events of the book, which provides some critical distance and a sense of how family folklore is understood and retold by subsequent generations. There isn't a lot of plot to the book, and some covering of well-worn ground (the family folklore) from different angles, but it comes together in a brilliantly imagined world that is bound by the past while trying to move forward.

I could not believe I had read the same book as the reviews posted within the book. They were Glowing and I had a hard time finishing the book. I persevered because I was reading it for book club. I did not really like the characters and had a hard time knowing who was speaking when the book hopped back and forth in time.

Alice McDermott is an excellent writer. She definitely writes about what she knows, i.e. there is not a line of dialogue that does not ring absolutely true. I grew up in the exact area of eastern Long Island that she describes with such accuracy and fondness, so that in itself gave me great pleasure. However, what makes this novel wonderful is its understated way of provoking the reader to think about profound topics and beliefs. The narrative deliberately comforts and disturbs at the same time.

While reading this book, I found my parents, aunts and uncles alive again in its pages, still struggling with the same problems, loves, hurts dreams and faith. I found it to be a riveting experience. I wanted to put it down, but found myself drawn in by it in much the way the past generations of my family must have felt drawn into the dramas they lived. The characters are true to life and the force their struggles and dreams exerted on them generation after generation seems only too believable. I found this painful to read but I hope to draw value from the experiences of this group of characters.

If you are Irish or of Irish decent, a must read. The author also is very descriptive and uses "pretty" language. Love it! The story is great for people who are not Irish also.
