I am astounded that this book has been out for almost a month and I am the first to review it on Amazon. This is worrying since it might indicate that the book has not received the attention it richly deserves. I can't think of a meta topic more important in this moment of our troubled history than the state of journalism. The author brings his long experience as a reporter and editor and now an academic to a thoughtful examination of how journalism -- especially nester organizations -- have come to the situation they are now in. Full of anecdotes about his time at the Guardian and full of probing examinations of many questions facing journalism today. An important read.

I cannot recommend this book enough. In a world where so many are endowed with supremely developed reptilian brains (to use a quote from the book itself), it is essential that we, as a members of society, can still count with media organizations such as The Guardian. Alan Rusbridger takes us along in his journey as editor, to revisit cases of investigative journalism that unearthed corruption such as the phone hacking by the Murdoch press, the Snowden files, the Barclay brothers and The Telegraph, Cambridge Analytica, and even the very present dangers poised by Goggle, Facebook and the like. All so transcendent that we may have forgotten them in the daily frenzy of news. So, being just mere individuals in the face of corporations, tech giants and surveillance threats (‘they know more about us that our own mothers’), the public service that this kind of journalism renders must be celebrated and, more than anything, preserved. It only suffices to ask ourselves where would we be without a free press. Finally, to quote the author, he explains the roots of Nick Davies’ indeclinable quest for truth (the star reporter that uncovered the hideous case of News of the World): ‘Power was the subject that obsessed him the most: the misuse of power. ‘For various reasons, I got hit a lot by adults when I was a child,’ he once told me in a reflective moment. ‘And I deeply hate people who abuse power because of that. So, deep down under all those layers, that's what drives me. I want to get my own back on people who abuse power and by good chance that's what a good journalist should do.’

Alan Rusbridger, editor of the Guardian from 1995-2015, has written an important book about publishing one of the most highly esteemed newspapers in the English speaking world. The challenges of establishing the newspaper online, the demise of advertising revenue, and the challenges of a newspaper disclosing corruption and Edward Snowden’sCopies of The U.S. National Security Agency documents are all described in detail. Mr Rusbridger is an excellent writer who gives you an intimate account of 20 years of Guardian history.I was so impressed by the high principles of the Guardian that I now get it online and have donated money to assure its survival. I already subscribe to the New York Times and the Washington Post online. I will be interested to see how the Guardian supplements these highly regarded newspapers.

Explained in clear language what faces the English language print press, and tells how one member of this troubled cohort dealt with the challenge. Rather successfully, as it turned out. The Guardian on line is a good read every day.

Lengthy book and detailed taking you over 2 decades of handling change and struggle in the newspaper industry formed over 300 years ago and how practices had to change. The Guardian newspaper now is the largest daily news information vehicle in the world.

As a retired American journalist who started my career the same year as the author, I enjoyed the journey through all of the economic and technological changes we saw together, the same though in different countries. I struggled through the many parts of the book that deal with British newspapers, libel laws, news personalities and so on, and he seemed to always find fault with other news outlets, never his own. And I was disappointed in his obvious liberal bias and that he seemed to see the media as victims of people who don't share his political worldview, particularly the pro-Brexit voters. I do think it is true that a free press is vital to democracy but at the same time the media must be accountable to the people, who in the end must pay for the work of the free press and in 427 pages I did not see any evidence that he understands that.

Chock full of interesting facts about newspaper publishing and the evolution of our society around the end of the last century and the beginning of this one. Very readable even for someone who isn't a writer or editor. Glad I bought it and am recommending it to other newspaper devotees.

An outstanding book on modern communications -- the problems, the controversy. By somebody in the middle ofthe rapid changes as newspaper editor.

I read this book when I was 13 years old and the effect was profound.I highly recommend it. If I could give everyone on the planet a free copy of this book I would. Now I return to it decades later and Russell's logic is just as devastating as it was when I first read it.Warning believers: Cognitive Dissonance ahead. Fasten your seat belt.

Betrand is not advocating for the abuse of Christians, be it verbal or non verbal. He is advocating for free thought and rational thinking to the extent that the human mind can conceive. He respectfully acknowledges the uncertainty in life. We cannot be 100% certain about most things. Just as there is no scientific proof for the existence of God, there is neither a scientific proof that disproves the existence of God. THIS BOOK IS NOT A PROOF against the existence of God. Betrand is only sharing his thoughts as he understands religion and in specificity, Christianity. These are his subjective thoughts. As reader, appreciate them and come up with your own subjective thoughts. Your thoughts will be incomplete until you READ THE BIBLE FOR YOURSELF. Don't worship Betrand, he is a human being just like you. Read the bible and come to your own conclusion on whether it is or is not absolute.

The next time some superstitious myth repeating Christian moron tries to corner you, or even if they are respectful about it, there is plenty of information / ammunition in this book to help you get them off your back. You might even get them to start questioning their beliefs.

Should be read by Christians who seek to impose their religious values on others.

Sir Bertrand is not just a good philosopher, but a great writer. He won the Nobel Prize for literature, so that tells you. This book has several essays on the general subject of religion and its evils, the best being the first one, "Why I Am Not a Christian". There, his discussion of Jesus is fascinating and powerful. He explains why Jesus was not really that "wise", and also why he was not really a very caring person. Everyone, believer or atheist, and everyone in between should read this book. It is wise, intelligent, honest, moral, and never angry or condescending.

Bertrand Russell was a polymath: a mathematician, a philosopher, a historian, a pacifist who was jailed for his anti-war views, and a Nobel Laureate in Literature. His essay "Why I Am Not A Christian," a lecture he delivered in 1927, is a clear, succinct, and well-reasoned brief against Christianity and the existence of a Deity (Christian or not). His hard to refute arguments presented in the essay are for those who are open to concepts which may not agree with their own views or their upbringing. But to read it is a journey worth the effort and may open to the reader new vistas.

Bertrand Russell was arguably one of the best skeptical writers of the 20th century and his description of why a person of reason, observation, science and history could not continue to pretend that religion held anything of value for him, his neighbors and collegues or the public at large. Whether you're questioning the validity of religion, or just curious about how an athiest thinks and feels this is a great place to start. It's crystal clear, short and to the point.

Interesting series of essays by a very intelligent man written early in the previous century. Provoked some thought

The description of this book is intriguing. What is life like down in the subway tunnels of New York? This book captures much of its narrator's experience in picture while leaving your imagination room to work too. It's really an interesting look at those in society who are otherwise invisible.Landowne's art isn't quite my cup of tea, but I did like it overall. Her depictions of buildings are attractive. It establishes a good mood too.The only real downside to this book is how short it is. This could have easily been 3 - 4 times as long, there's no doubt that this story is just the tip of the iceberg. the plus side is that its brevity allows for repeat readings and it never gets old.

I tried very hard not to weep while reading this book. I was not successful. "Pitch Black" is a true story that is like a fairy tale in its ability to reach into the depths of the heart. A young man, abandoned by all who should have cared for him, is chased into a dark wilderness where he finds friends and the only home he's ever known -- the NYC subway tunnels. A male, urban Snow White in black skin, there was even a princess to help him rescue himself. But alas, all too late. Anthony Horton died in a fire in the place he called home. The sad irony is that the publication of "Pitch Black" might have brought him some measure of safety and security. He was a beautiful soul, tossed on the garbage heap, like so many other good and useful things. Luckily, this book leaves us for all time with a glimpse of his magnificent mind and heart.

Riding the L in Chicago, I would always gaze out the windows into the darkness, wondering what/who was out there. This book gives some insight into that question. This story takes place in NYC, and for a moment, I felt like I was in the tunnels with him. This is a book that can be returned to many times. There are many small details that are overlooked the first time but are there to be discovered the next.At the end of the book is a photo of a tunnel grate open with a ladder descending into pitch black. Look into the darkness.

This book is real as luck. Give it a look if you dare know what's what!

I used this for a class. It is an interesting book.

I found out about this book today after reading a headline on Google News. Unfortunately, one of the co-authors died in a fire in a room in the subway tunnels he was still living in.[...][...]

I first learned about Anthony Horton when he died in a fire in his underground home in a subway tunnel in New York City.  Mr. Horton was given away by his birth parents and then spent years in the foster care system. He was involved with the criminal justice system and lived in homeless shelters.  He found the shelters to be dangerous and undesirable places.  While running from the transit police, he accidentally found the underground subway tunnel community that exists in New York, as well as in many other cities such as Las Vegas. Somehow through all of this he maintained a noticeable kindness that was remarked on by others and thus made friends and benefactors.  Some of these benefactors attempted to help him live a "normal" life which he did for awhile.  However, he was not able to find happiness in that aboveground life and returned to the tunnels, where he lived in his two room tunnel home which was furnished with a sofa, bookcases, bed and other items found in the trash.  After reading about Mr. Horton and his artwork in the tunnels and finding that some of his work had been published, I wanted to find his book.  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/07/nyregion/the-fiery-end-of-a-life-lived-beneath-the-city.html?_r=0The book is co-written by an artist Mr. Horton met in the subway with whom he formed a friendship.  It is basically a graphic memoir with illustrations by both authors.  I think it is an important work as well as a fascinating story and includes his rules for living underground.  The most important one may be "Remember, anything you need can be found in the garbage."  Five stars

First, this is just a nicely done graphic novel, and that shouldn't be overlooked. I typically gravitate towards more elaborate or precise drawing styles, but the loose, urbane style employed in Pitch Black turns out to be perfect. It comes across almost like a book for children at first, except that it will take you for a brief moment to one of the most horrifying places on earth. This thin volume shook my complacent foundations.
