I bought this book after re-watching the movie taken largely from this exhaustive biography. As someone who has read many bios, let me say that this is a refreshing and encouraging alternative to the fawning and excessive grocery store drivel and/or the dull and fact-filled dissertations that describe most biographies. Hayden Herrera manages to combine a staggeringly comprehensive detailing of Kahlo's life with an easy prose that makes for an engaging read. I know far more about this artist than I could've imagined and it is largely first-hand accounts either from the pages of Frida's own diaries and numerous letters or the people who were there. Herrera keeps her personal opinions regarding the events to a minimum and allows the events to speak for themselves. The life of Frida Kahlo needs no additional padding or maudlin tricks to engender a connection to anyone with a heart and soul. When the author does speculate, it comes from someone who has clearly studied her subject thoroughly and backs up her theories with a wealth of compelling evidence and sensible arguments. While her appreciation for Kahlo is obvious, Herrera does not stop short of being critical, questioning Kahlo's motives, and revealing the stark humanity and insecurity that Kahlo tried to obscure with her public persona as the confident, outspoken, provocative enchantress sporting her exotic Tehuana finery. However, the best use of Herrera's research and the clear compassion and empathy she has for this incredible woman is when she analizes Frida's paintings. I found myself continuously turning back and forth from the detailed observations and interpretation to the paintings and trying to understand what the author is talking about. It was fascinating reading and a wonderful exploration that shed light into the depths of Frida's intensely personal art.Two last notes: First, the version I bought does not sport Salma Hayek on the cover but instead one of Frida's many self-portraits. Apparently the publishers corrected this unfortunate decision based on movie marketing. Second, I was fortunate enough to take in the amazing exhibit of Frida Kahlo at the Philadelphia Museum just a few weeks ago and it was a moving and special day. Seeing the actual frames dripping blood, the size and grandeur of some of the works juxtaposed with the smaller works, and the sheer emotionally gravity of her art was something I'll never forget. Having read much of this biography by that time, I was able to bring that much more to that exhilarating opportunity.Frida Kahlo was not just an extraordinary artist but was moreover an extraordinary person. Herrera's heartfelt, deeply researched, and brilliantly written biography allows those of us who never knew her to feel as if we have and to share in the universal quality of her painful work. That alone makes us better people for having experienced it.

The fact that this book has an actress on the cover instead of a photo of Frida is unacceptable to me. I pray if there is ever a biography about said actress, may they put a photo of Frida smack on the cover.

I agree as some reviewers have noted that this book is a bit light on Frida's feminist and political traits and actions, buys into gender stereotytpes somewhat and so misses the complexity of her character and that some of the art analysis given seems to contradict what Frida herself has written on paintings or just seem very unlikely and a bit of a stretch. One reviewer wrote: 'Herrera makes her out to be a Diego obsessed, pain obsessed sack of shit, and I'm not buying it.'There is a lot of careful and meticulous research in this book and the author has done a amazing job putting so much information together in such a readable format. But several times in the book the author concludes things about Frida's motivations and attitudes to her illnesses struck me as perhaps quite unfair and unlikely. The conclusions didn't seem to match the evidence.Frida's letters to her doctor friend, several of which are included in the book, made it very clear that she was anxious to have more surgery only if it'd really help her and if he thought it was a good idea. To me she was very clearly motivated only by a desire to have the best health when she decided on a surgery or decided against it. She really wanted this doctor's unbiased opinion either way. She was certainly not biased towards surgery and didn't take it lightly, as she knew what a cost it'd have during recovery.Yet Harrera writes that Frida's surgeries were often very 'conveniently' timed with periods where Diego's attention may have been straying from Frida. She also comments in a quite loaded way that many of her surgeries were 'unnecessary.'Clearly Frida had a strong link with Diego, maybe even an obsession, but I think it is going too far to say she had unnecessary surgeries so as to elicit his attention. She was so much more of a complex and intelligent person than that and he was not the only motivation for her actions. It is easy to write now that some of those surgeries were unnecessary (and they were)...but then, many treatments those of us that are ill try are unnecessary. The point is that you don't know that until afterwards!Having something to hang your quiet backgound-rumble-of-hope on - a new surgery, or diet etc. - is a huge part of what keeps you going when you are ill. What keeps you from giving up and lets you get through your difficult days with laughs and a few smiles. If she were not so concerned with improving her health she would not have put herself through so much and risked so much to try and improve it. This book talks of Frida's 'desperate hope' and I think that is just what she had.I'm sure the heavy drinking didn't help - nobody's perfect - but I think it is unfair to say that Frida would have made herself bedbound for months after a risky surgery because it might improve her love-life in the short term.It is so easy to write 'she was bedbound for 4 months' after a surgery. But to actually experience being bedbound, relying on others for every small thing and being unable to paint - to do the one thing you love so very much - for 4 months is a thing of immense magnitude. The difference between being bedbound for a month or 2 or 4 is very hard to put into words. Each day and week and month of being bedbound contains so much suffering and being utterly miserable. Every week or even hour counts. There are big sufferings and small ones and a loss of dignity and the soul-destroying feeling of being dependant on others for everything. There is so much more suffering than you can imagine, if you haven't done it. Try it for a month... or a week, and see how likely you'd be to do it to yourself again if you could at all avoid it. For any reason not connected to your health.Frida's illness made her oppressed by tedium, very lonely and sometimes possibly suicidal. Frida wrote after one surgery that she was going through 'a desperation that no words can describe' and said that she was 'happy to be alive so long as I can paint.'Personally I don't buy that someone as remarkable, independent and painting-obsessed as Frida would give herself even one extra month of being bedbound (and unable to paint or even to SIT) and an unpleasant and unnecessary surgery, on purpose, let alone just to get attention from someone else in such a weak and manipulative way.Playing up certain aspects of illness, or exaggerating them at times and demanding more care and attention from others after a surgery - maybe, but not that.Just my opinion. What I know for sure is that Frida was a remarkable, fascinating and complicated individual and a brilliant artist. I enjoyed seeing some of the paintings reproduced in this book (small and not next to the actual text which described them, as annoying as that was!). Some I hadn't seen before and I now want to see as many of them as I can, as well as learn more about Frida. This was an interesting read overall. I'm glad too I got a copy with a Frida painting featured on the cover and not the movie-tie-in image of an actor - hate when publishers do that!I'm looking forward to reading 'Devouring Frida' now, which comes highly recommended

Well i'm afraid i have no good review to leave since the book i got sent was the wrong one. Although it is about Frida Kahlo it is not the one i ordered, but by a different author....in SPANISH.I'd send it back if i could except its not possible since i live on a US military base abroad. If the seller would like to send me the right one in English by Hayden Herrera and not Rauda Jamis then that would be great since i still really want to read the book.

The complexities and the difficulties of GDP are not frequently discussed, but they are well-described here - so is the necessity for a growth measure like GDP. This well-written little book frankly discusses both the pluses of GDP as well as the minuses, warts and all. Only God knows how, but the writer explains the subject matter competently for both the layperson and the professional economist - which is extremely rare, but most welcome. This makes the book well worth reading - to both laypersons and specialists alike.

Slim and readable: it only took me about three hours to go through it.Informative: it covers pretty much every issue I know of on the subject, the only exception I can think of being that she fails to educate the reader on the treatment of welfare state transfer payments (they are not included in GDP which, although that is mechanically correct, produces a misleading under-statement of government's role in the economy - a good chunk of the consumption in GDP is paid for with welfare state transfer payments that are not identified as such in GDP). Maybe also some topics are treated too lightly (household production) than others (surprising depth on financial services), but that's to be expected given the obvious intent to be brief. There were a couple recitations of formulas that I think are mis-stated but they were not significant to detract.Very good introduction to the topic, and more erudite and less polemical than I would have predicted when I opened it.Some of the other reviews, I think downgrade the book for not sharing the reviewer's ideological perspective. That is unfair to the author. The book's title is exceedingly accurate (which itself is rare in books in this field that often overstate their contents to make more sales): the author is not issuing a"a very conservative defense of GDP orthodoxy" to quote one such review. It is simply what the title says, a "brief but affectionate history". A basic understanding of the topic is a good thing in and of itself before one adopts a critical posture, and this book definitely contributes to such an understanding. Well done.

This updated edition provides an outstanding yet concise historical and conceptual foundation that not merely helps to grasp how the strengths of the aggregate variable known as GDP came to be so central to the thinking of economists and political leadership but also reveals the vulnerabilities and shortfalls born of arbitrary use of this quasi proxy variable and proxy variables in general. Will we eventually look to a different variable to determine such things as monetary policy for shaping domestic economic growth and standards of living as well as the approaches taken by the IMF, WB, and IDB toward struggling economies? After reading this, you might agree that there is room to explore the question.

I read GDP: A Brief but Affectionate History by Diane Coyle for three reasons: (1) to see if the book can be used as a textbook in a principles of macroeconomics class; (2) of course, to learn more about GDP and economic growth; and (3) to learn writing from an inspiring economics communicator.Arnold Kling rightly says that economic history can be used to teach macroeconomics more effectively. GDP presents a historical narrative of the evolution of GDP, which started as a result of war, and soon became the main macroeconomic indicator. So, yes, with a few explanations to clarify concepts, one can use the book in an introductory class on macroeconomics. The Gross Domestic Product has been criticised frequently. Critics argue, among other things, that GDP is not a good measure of social welfare, that it does not include the informal economy, and that it does not deal well with innovation. Those criticisms are justifiable and spot-on, but as Diane Coyle argues, in spite of its many handicaps the GDP is still a useful tool to measure economic performance. From the beginning GDP was not seen as a measure of social welfare, but of income and production. Of course, we need other indicators to measure welfare, but as far as income and production goes, the GDP is still useful. That does not mean that it is perfect, not at all. In fact, it needs serious modifications.I like Diane's writing style a lot. I follow her blog closely. However, I can not tell exactly what is so attractive about her writing. She explains her ideas and arguments with an almost optimal level of complexity, no more, no less. You can look at the way she describes GNP in the book. She could have given a long explanation but instead she just tells what is sufficient for understanding the main ideas in the book. The most important characteristic, I think, is that she asks big questions. At the end of the book she argues that, under the current digital and online economy, and everything that they imply we need a new definition of "the economy." That is a metaphysical claim of a mainly "physical" social science. So she makes one think big and not many writers can do that.Of course I am making huge simplifications of sharply elaborated arguments. .

Delivers exactly what the title promises: a presentation of the GDP concept emergence, its implementation heavily influenced by specific political and social conditions, its strengths and weaknesses as measuring tool. Everything is placed in the historical context, the disputes around various compromises are briefly presented and pro and cons arguments for various technical solutions adopted for measuring the economic activity are well balanced against each other. Yes, the GDP is far from being a perfect measure of economic activity and even less so for welfare or happiness. But when one understands its limits and biases, it still is a very useful instrument for the economists, the policy makers and the public at large. Wonderfully written.

I have several of the Demystified books and have always found them to be well written and to provide a source of quick information. I purchased the book on Optics since it has been many years since I had Physics. I've been taking some Astronomy courses and have found that my lack of currency with optics has made it harder for me to come to grips with some of the information in my courses. So far the book has served me well as a review reference and would probably be helpful as a source for someone taking a physics course when the optics and lens topics come up.

This book is very well written. The basic concepts are presented in an easy to understand language. The math is on the early high school level. This book covers the uses of lasers pretty well. It will also help anyone who is shopping for an optical device understand the numbers associated with camera lenses, telescopes, display pixels etc, etc.The audience that will benefit the most from this book are people who are curious about how optics work,,,,and optical devices work,,,, and what they are used for. As a textbook it would be on the high school level. If you really want to learn optics in a comprehensive fashion, this will leave you with many unaddressed issues and unanswered questions.

Finally, after struggling for a while, I was fortunate enough to come across this book. Granted, I do not have a gift for math and physics, but I tried to grasp, many time, just a few basics of Optics, with no success. Then I came across this book, fortunately. As a physician, I had taken "Math for Non-Math Majors", and "Physics for non-Physics Majors" in college to get a clue, but no luck, as I said. Now, it even more important to learn optics because of the digitalization of healthcare, and the utilization of sciences like nanothechnology, genomics, and optics to discover amazing things. That camera on an iPhone is being used for lots of new apps, and actually makes the iPhone a medical device, in some cases (the digidoc app to test for oxygen in blood stream, using an app and the iphone)This book gave me a well-need basis in optics, and I have a general idea now, of how it is being used by little computers like the iPhone. For that, I would like to thank the author.

Kind of on a "physics for poets" level but a great conceptual overview using no more than simple algebra.

Interesting entry level book on general Physics

Delivered on time. Satisfied with product.

The text was clear and easily inderstood I enjoyed all the topics which added to my understanding of the subject. It is also a great reference volume.

The topics were broad and semi-helpful, but I needed a book more on magnifications.

This is my first audiobook and thus my first experience with the effect live narration has on text. I will say that every other David Sedaris essay I have read has been uproariously funny. I read both Holidays on Ice and Me Talk Pretty One Day.This book wasn't as funny. I enjoyed the honest and heartfelt coming out story of "I Like Guys". However, many of the essays were sad or even boring. I felt myself wishing the segment would be over so I could see if the next one would be funnier. I had no idea David's childhood had been so painful. I guess this just wasn't what I expected from the author of Holidays On Ice.I cannot gauge if I may have found it more entertaining to read than to listen to.

As always with a new book by David Sedaris, I can hardly wait to get it and I am never disappointed. Naked is wonderful. I always feel as if Mr. Sedaris (who I think of as David because I feel like I've known him all my life) can see straight into my brain and give me the gift of hours of pleasure knowing there is someone as wacky and obsessed with the funny bits of life as I am. I would recommend this book to anyone with a good sense of humor and a desire to see the both the frailty and grandness of the human condition. Definitely another laugh-out-loud journey through David's fabulous mind.

Not that our hero was diagnosed as autistic as a child. Sure, he licked light switches, observed strange daily rituals, and was OCD to the max. But back in the carefree 50's and 60's, people knew very little about childhood disabilities and (for the most part) cared even less.A kid who behaved in socially inappropriate ways was "weird." Unless his parents or teachers could beat the weirdness of him, he STAYED weird. And thus little David Sedaris continued to mystify and irritate the adults around him right up until he went off to college. Then he discovered the miracle of illegal drugs and, from that point on, no explanation for his weirdness was needed. Praise Jesus! It's a miracle!I discovered Sedaris two years ago and went through his books like shot through a goose. At first they seem like a confusing series of unrelated stories, which they ARE. But there's some method to the madness, although the madness always outweighs the method. It helps if you realize that his life divides into three sections: his childhood with his solidly middle-class, but horrifyingly dysfunctional family; his time as a rebellious and notably unsuccessful young man, alternating between unhappy stints at various colleges and stretches of menial jobs and close contact with people most of us would run miles to avoid; and finally his life as a writer and partner to the reassuringly normal Hugh.So there's an over-all chronological order, although he never makes any attempt to knit his stories into a coherent whole. That's YOUR job, reader. So roll up your sleeves and start reading. With two wildly mismatched parents and a cast of strange siblings, he was doomed from birth to either end up in a mental hospital or with some REALLY great material. Actually, he's been in a mental hospital, but as a teen-aged volunteer for two summers. What kid wants to spend his summers exploring the nuances of insanity? David Sedaris, that's who. What's my favorite? Tough to say. LOVED the saga of his teen-aged sister bringing home the raddled, but charmingly naive prostitute for Christmas. Know-it-all pater familias Lou Sedaris was determined for his offspring to start earning their keep at an early age. Nothing like the value of hard work and you meet such nice people employed at a cafeteria that hires parolees. These stories are sometimes horrifying and sometimes sad and frequently hilarious. Many of them are all three at the same time, much like life. If you're easily offended or have a cardiac condition that puts you at risk, better skip them. Otherwise, fasten your seat belt and enjoy.

Naked had been sitting on my shelf for at least a year before I decided to read it. I have a bad habit of not reading books after I buy them, so this should come as no surprise. As a memoir, Naked is an unbelievably good collection of autobiographical essays. As you make your way through Naked, you just find yourself in disbelief at Sedaris' dysfunctional family. Everyone out there claims to have some sort of dysfunctional family, but Sedaris' truly takes the cake. From the authors childhood filled with his nervous tics and OCD habits to his teachers visiting his home while being offered alcoholic beverages while watching his mother make mock impersonations of her son. It makes you really feel for the author. The best part of Naked by far is the Ya-Ya, Sedaris' grandmother. It makes me wish I had at least one grandmother just like her growing up. If you don't find yourself laughing out loud at least once, you don't have a sense of humor :). Then the authors tales as a long-time hitchhiker while doing a wide variety of manual labor jobs give readers like myself hope that haven't quite figured out who they are or what they want to do in life. On a personal level, these tales were really what I liked the most about Sedaris. The fact that he's come out of all of the hell and many years of uncertainty/wandering to become a successful author and playwright is truly inspiring. It just goes to show you anything is possible, even if it takes until much later in life to figure it out.My gripe with Naked comes as a "side-splitting" and "hilariously entertaining" memoir. For me, the humor started to die around the time Sedaris goes away to camp for a month. From that point on, the novel's comedic aspect drops off significantly. Granted, the novel definitely takes on a darker tone up until the last few chapters, but it was my expectation that it'd be funny for more than just half the book. In that regard, the reviews and descriptions of the book disappointed me.Overall, it's definitely a worthwhile read for anyone who wants to be genuinely captivated by another persons trials and tribulations as well as how they overcame them. Just don't expect to be a comedy from start to finish. I wouldn't quite give it 4 stars, but more along the lines of 3.5 stars. As it's been out for about 14 years now, Naked is certainly a bargain for the price. So if you end up not liking it as much as you thought, it won't have burned a large hole in your wallet. :)-Travis S.

The group manages to quell Dexter's rebellion and further secure the prison. At the same time, a katana-wielding woman named Michonne arrives at the prison seeking refuge. Her arrival leads to a major schism within the group, and Rick's role as leader is questioned as the others start to fear for his sanity. The volume ends with one simple proclamation that will forever change the survivors of The Walking Dead.

I hopped on The Walking Dead band wagon after the show became popular, so I purchased this volume to catch up on missed issues. If you like the series, this is a must have item. That said, I caution you if you want to order this book--or likely any comic--through Amazon Prime. I bought this book with several other items, one of which was quite large, but all my purchases were shipped in the same box. The comic was free to move around within the box so by the time it arrived, the book was bent and one page was ripped from banging into the other contents of the box. If you're a Prime customer, I suggest either purchasing this item by itself, or only with other books, so the item is less likely to be damaged in shipping.

If you are a fan of AMC's The Walking Dead then I would recommend you give the comics a try. I was introduced TWD universe through the show, but as I fell in love with it I longed for more walking dead. The comic books are great in that they allow a deeper look into the stories and a, sometimes, more graphic approach to the zombie apocalypse.

The ratio of soap opera to gutmunching is out of whack in this, the weakest of the four volumes of "Dead" that I've read. The emphasis is more on sentimental goo than zombie gore as the survivors of the apocalypse explore their prison refuge and each other. The cheezy melodrama gets thick when alpha males Rick and Tyreese have their duke-it-out confrontation, and Rick's self-important, neverending climactic speech gets downright ridiculous. But it's inevitable that sooner or later, someone's gonna leave a door or a gate open and let in some hungry zombies. Here's hoping the next volume will be less jawin and more chawin.

Most of the folks here already know that The Walking Dead saga is a compilation of stories by Robert Kirkman that expand on the story that is well know to any zombie movie fan. The main story. The one started in earnest by George Romero in 1968 with Night of the Living Dead [and was later remade in 1990 (the version that I prefer) by Tom Savini (with Romero oversight)]The Walking Dead volume 4 continues the story of Police Officer Rick Grimes and his band of normal-world-refugees as they settle into their new home. And it's time to clean house. Clean house of some bad prior residents. Clean house of some undead residents. And clean house of rules made prematurely...like, "You kill, you die." That rule clearly just won't do in The New World. In volume 4 relationships are forged and strengthened, and relationships are betrayed and broken. A new character (Michonne) is introduced, and she brings with her a strange (split?) personality, a dose of unrest for the gang and--most oddly--an unexplained ability to seemingly tame the undead.I'm not a regular comic book reader. But I was drawn to The Walking Dead by the volume releases that bring the convenience of being able to get several chapters of the story without the month to month waiting for each issue. And I am now hooked. The volume releases of The Walking Dead are like reading a screenplay with storyboards of a version of Night of the Living Dead that began simultaneously, but in a different part of the country. Yes, it's kind of a rip-off of a story (stories) already told, but the key is that it's done very very well. The zombies are true to the original Romero creation: slow and stupid as opposed to the 28 Days Later (2002) or 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead fast and thinking zombies. Each volume takes under an hour to get all the way through, and they leave you wanting more. Volumes 1 through 5 are all available individually. A hard cover edition of volume 1 & 2 is out and a hard cover edition of volumes 3 & 4 is scheduled for early 2007. Volume 6 is scheduled for release the last week of February 2007; I have no info on a hard cover release of volumes 5 & 6, but I'm sure that it will happen if you prefer to wait.So anyone in need of a very well done zombie fix that you don't put into your DVD player should absolutely get down with The Walking Dead sickness. Add it to your cart, but be sure to start with volume 1 and read them chronologically.

This volume finds the characters finally realizing that life will never return to normal. It also sees Rick cross the line from sincere leader to savage survivor for the necessity of the group, however the repercussions are not what anyone expected.

My boys started liking the Walking Dead because of the show on AMC. We bought them the first three graphic novels to see if they would like them and we can't get them to put them down and wound up buying through volume 9 so far. We plan to get each the whole set to have. They have some adult type content and for me wouldn't feel comfortable going any younger than 12 years old and I think I was being pretty liberal letting my 12 year old have them. They are great quality and I would recommend for any Walking Dead, graphic novel, or zombie fan 12-13 and over.

I have read all these issues previously, and enjoyed them just as much on the second go through. There are enough differences between the comic and show to keep you guessing even if you follow both. Great writing.

I discovered these calendars last year, and it makes me happy everytime I look at it. There is adequate room to write appointments in each square, and the paper is a heavy weight and good quality. They may be a little more expensive than most calendars, but are certainly worth it. After all, it will last all year, and each month you will happily anticipate the next month's page.

This is the third year I've purchased this Suzy Toronto calendar. Love it! Fun and inspiring messages, cute illustrations and enough blank space to write all my commitments on each date, and above all the calendar is printed on paper with a matte not glossy finish enable me to write on it in pencil.

I absolutely LOVE this calendar! I have it on my wall in my office and every time I look at it, it gives me a positive feeling. It is colorful, and large enough to write things in the boxes. It's made of a type of cardboard, also, which is very nice. There is an uplifting message for each month, which makes me feel good reading it. I will be definitely be buying one next year also.

I have been getting these calendars for my daughter for Christmas every year since 2011. The artwork is always fun and colorful and the messages are inspirational. Perfect for the special teenage girl or woman in your life. Every year after the calendar is finished, I take the favourite pages out & put them up in my office at work as wall art for my cubicle. Brightens it up and who doesn't need a motivational picture at work.

This second time I ordered these. The first order of 3 were in GREAT SHAPE. I gave as gifts and everyone loved. So, I ordered two more. One corner was bent on one and one of the corner 'jewels' was completely missing. Disappointed.

This is an amazingly, beautiful calendar!!! It provides me inspiration when I'm at work!!! My client's also love the positive messages and beautiful illustrations!!! The author has definitely gained a fan in me! I have already preordered my calendar for next year!!!

Beautiful !! The messages are wonderful and I buy one every year for my granddaughter, she looks forward to them too.

Love Suzy Toronto and her things. I have bought one of her calendars in years past and loved them this is right up there with the best colorful room to write in the squares and awesome sayings and pictures
