The group manages to quell Dexter's rebellion and further secure the prison. At the same time, a katana-wielding woman named Michonne arrives at the prison seeking refuge. Her arrival leads to a major schism within the group, and Rick's role as leader is questioned as the others start to fear for his sanity. The volume ends with one simple proclamation that will forever change the survivors of The Walking Dead.
I hopped on The Walking Dead band wagon after the show became popular, so I purchased this volume to catch up on missed issues. If you like the series, this is a must have item. That said, I caution you if you want to order this book--or likely any comic--through Amazon Prime. I bought this book with several other items, one of which was quite large, but all my purchases were shipped in the same box. The comic was free to move around within the box so by the time it arrived, the book was bent and one page was ripped from banging into the other contents of the box. If you're a Prime customer, I suggest either purchasing this item by itself, or only with other books, so the item is less likely to be damaged in shipping.
If you are a fan of AMC's The Walking Dead then I would recommend you give the comics a try. I was introduced TWD universe through the show, but as I fell in love with it I longed for more walking dead. The comic books are great in that they allow a deeper look into the stories and a, sometimes, more graphic approach to the zombie apocalypse.
The ratio of soap opera to gutmunching is out of whack in this, the weakest of the four volumes of "Dead" that I've read. The emphasis is more on sentimental goo than zombie gore as the survivors of the apocalypse explore their prison refuge and each other. The cheezy melodrama gets thick when alpha males Rick and Tyreese have their duke-it-out confrontation, and Rick's self-important, neverending climactic speech gets downright ridiculous. But it's inevitable that sooner or later, someone's gonna leave a door or a gate open and let in some hungry zombies. Here's hoping the next volume will be less jawin and more chawin.
Most of the folks here already know that The Walking Dead saga is a compilation of stories by Robert Kirkman that expand on the story that is well know to any zombie movie fan. The main story. The one started in earnest by George Romero in 1968 with Night of the Living Dead [and was later remade in 1990 (the version that I prefer) by Tom Savini (with Romero oversight)]The Walking Dead volume 4 continues the story of Police Officer Rick Grimes and his band of normal-world-refugees as they settle into their new home. And it's time to clean house. Clean house of some bad prior residents. Clean house of some undead residents. And clean house of rules made prematurely...like, "You kill, you die." That rule clearly just won't do in The New World. In volume 4 relationships are forged and strengthened, and relationships are betrayed and broken. A new character (Michonne) is introduced, and she brings with her a strange (split?) personality, a dose of unrest for the gang and--most oddly--an unexplained ability to seemingly tame the undead.I'm not a regular comic book reader. But I was drawn to The Walking Dead by the volume releases that bring the convenience of being able to get several chapters of the story without the month to month waiting for each issue. And I am now hooked. The volume releases of The Walking Dead are like reading a screenplay with storyboards of a version of Night of the Living Dead that began simultaneously, but in a different part of the country. Yes, it's kind of a rip-off of a story (stories) already told, but the key is that it's done very very well. The zombies are true to the original Romero creation: slow and stupid as opposed to the 28 Days Later (2002) or 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead fast and thinking zombies. Each volume takes under an hour to get all the way through, and they leave you wanting more. Volumes 1 through 5 are all available individually. A hard cover edition of volume 1 & 2 is out and a hard cover edition of volumes 3 & 4 is scheduled for early 2007. Volume 6 is scheduled for release the last week of February 2007; I have no info on a hard cover release of volumes 5 & 6, but I'm sure that it will happen if you prefer to wait.So anyone in need of a very well done zombie fix that you don't put into your DVD player should absolutely get down with The Walking Dead sickness. Add it to your cart, but be sure to start with volume 1 and read them chronologically.
This volume finds the characters finally realizing that life will never return to normal. It also sees Rick cross the line from sincere leader to savage survivor for the necessity of the group, however the repercussions are not what anyone expected.
My boys started liking the Walking Dead because of the show on AMC. We bought them the first three graphic novels to see if they would like them and we can't get them to put them down and wound up buying through volume 9 so far. We plan to get each the whole set to have. They have some adult type content and for me wouldn't feel comfortable going any younger than 12 years old and I think I was being pretty liberal letting my 12 year old have them. They are great quality and I would recommend for any Walking Dead, graphic novel, or zombie fan 12-13 and over.
I have read all these issues previously, and enjoyed them just as much on the second go through. There are enough differences between the comic and show to keep you guessing even if you follow both. Great writing.
