I really didn't expect much from this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. Garden writers and gardeners are two different species, usually, but Jenks does a pretty good job as both. There is a lot of very useful information this book. I've recommended it to my fellow gardeners.
I am an avid Organic gardener and learned a few more procedures that will be useful. Well written.
This book brought back many great memories of gardening with my Great Grand Mother, my Grand Mother and of course my Mom. Great ideas and interesting facts...I am thrilled I live so close.

As a decades-long "Howard Stern Show" fan, I expected (and got) what I was looking for - the backstories behind the best stories known to every loyal listener (even though there are, likely, thousands more anecdotes he could have told). But, what surprised me - in the best way possible - is how warm and sweet the tone of the book is on every page. Jackie makes no excuses for being the wild man he is (or was), yet, his gratitude for the opportunities he's had, the people he's met and worked with and the life he's led is strongly evident throughout. It felt good to "visit" with Jackie again after his absence from the daily airwaves for so many years. Even those who weren't familiar with him from the Stern show will enjoy this breezy, laugh-filled memoir.
It read like an honest review of Jackie's career. Hard to believe it's been 18 years since Jackie left the show. Kudos to Jackie for being so honest. I really enjoyed the read. It's ironic how Jackie's humor brought Howard to the national stage, and yet there is no way Howard would allow the jokes Jackie wrote in his day to be on the show today. That said, I love that today Howard can interview a Paul McCartney, whereas 20 years ago the elite celebrities would fear a Stuttering John ambush. So, without Jackie, there would be no Howard of today, even though Jackie's not on the show today.
Many of the stories in the book have been beaten to death on the Stern Show already, not much new info was presented. I did enjoy and respect his chapter about his final contract even including actual salary numbers. Worth reading just don't expect anything salacious or juicy
Definitely didn't laugh out loud. As a longtime Stern fan until past 8 years I was disappointed there wasn't more behind the scenes details and information revealed about Howard or Robin or Fred. Too many easy teeth jokes about Gary. Kind of boring and wanted more than the fact I already knew which was that Jackie was the funniest guy on the show and Fred was 2nd. They made Howard look good and never really got credit or reimbursement for their hard work. I wanted to hear some bad stuff about Howard....
Jackie is a funny,funny man . It's he wants you to know every detail and it gets boring. Not enough about the "Stern" years. Too much about Rodney Dangerfield. Love the guy. All the best but it was mediocre.
It made me nostalgic for classic Stern. It started off a little slow with the family history, but once he got to the stuff that everyone bought the book for it gets interesting. It's fun reading Jackie's account of everything that happen, and you can almost feel his thrill in reciting the events of his life. Makes me wish Jackie was still on the show. I've been scouring the internet trying to find old footage. Definitely worth the read and "F Jackie!"

Awesome read! Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling is a comedy legend. If you ever get to see him live, do it. He is hysterical. If you listened to the Howard Stern Show in the 80's and 90's, you'll find this book to be fun to read.(I returned mine to Amazon, was given one as a gift) Amazon price was very competitive and it came packaged very well.

Great book by a wonderful photographer and teacher. One day I may be able to afford a seminar with Rick, but with kids in college, this is not that time. However, I can still access his teaching through this book and his KelbyOne classes. Highly recommended once you realize more gear is not going to help your photography and want to improve the photographer.
Firstly, I want to say I am a fan of Rick Sammon's work. I recently bought this book and it sat on my shelf for several weeks. I just hadn't gotten around to reading any of it yet. I picked it up about a week ago and started in on page one and I was hooked. He has a clear, concise way of writing that makes it easy to read. I feel like he is in the room talking to me and helping nudge me along in my photography skills. Secondly, he uses quotes throughout the book that help encapsulate what he is trying to get across. Thirdly, the photos. He has tons of photos (well, not that many) but he uses a LOT to help illustrate his points (there are over 300). Other books seem to parcel out their photos sparsely but Rick generously loads his book up with fabulous photos of before and after. His coverage of topics is thorough for any photographer, whether you are amateur or professional. Even the professionals need a jump start or 'kick in the pants' to get motivated. Rick does this beautifully. He leaves no stone unturned in this book. Check out the table of contents and you will see what I mean. I think this is a necessary book for your shelves. Rick is a master at sharing his fine tuned experience and knowledge with others in a way that is easy to digest. I especially liked the first chapter on "The Four Levels of Learning." Starting the book with this topic helps the reader assess where they are at and gives us things to think about in terms of where we would place ourselves currently, and where we would like to be. This book is so well laid out and organized. Rick carefully explains the topic and then refers back to it at the end of the book to illustrate the assignments that he suggests. I think that this book should be in every photographers personal library.
I've read several books by Mr. Sammon, but this one might be my favorite. The way Rick breaks down how the way the image was created, how little changes to how you see a scene can have a major impact on the final outcome of the photo and how to process the images to really maximize the creative impact makes this book a must purchase for anyone looking to take their photography to the next level. I can honestly say that after reading Mr. Sammon's book, I was inspired to get back out in the field and shoot more. I can think of no higher praise.
Although I have always liked "taking pictures", I am just now starting to try to learn the craft. Landscapes and nature are what I am focusing on. I am in the stage where I know I am not good, so at least I am progressing. This book has really opened my eyes to the possibilities of getting creative and expressing myself through the editing process. Sure, I want to get the best in-camera image possible, but after reading this I feel it's ok to experiment with post picture processing. I think this is a great book for the amateur like myself and it's an enjoyable read.
I was on the waiting list for this book and boy was it worth it. It was just like being at a Rick Sammon Workshop (several years ago he was my first photography workshop) with him looking over your shoulder advising me how to take the shot and why to take that particular shot. Love Rick's stories and how he "got the shot". Rick had me after the second section of the book, even before the first chapter. Highly recommend this book to everyone.
This book is awesome. I have always liked to take pictures and recently started on a journey to move my picture taking to a higher level. Rick Sammon's book is full of pictures, concepts and processes, which has helped me rethink how I approach my photography. Rick has a teaching style that is easy to follow, concepts that are fun to try, and his before and after photos demonstrate a few simple steps to turn a good shot into a great photo. I believe that there is something of value for all levels of photographers, and I have returned to this book a few times to reinforce some of the concepts and also try new ones. I highly recommend this book and will be purchasing hard copies when they become available to be given as gifts to some of my photography friends
Loved its simplicity, honesty and straight forward approach to explain every topic. It is easy to read and loaded with tips and tricks. Totally recommended for an overall look at many types of photography. Do not expect an overly technical or specialized book. It is a nice refresher of many things related to photography.
