I thought it would be helpful to warn other customers that if you buy the Kindle edition of an Adobe Classroom in a Book which deals with software versions older than CS5 (the current version at the time of this review), you may not be able to obtain the project files that are supposed to come with the book. I discovered this when I bought the CS4 Flash book and one of my co-workers told me he had the same problem with other CS4 Kindle editions (we still use CS4 versions of some Adobe products where we work). After some searching online, it appears there's no way to obtain the older project files without buying the paper edition (which comes with the files on a CD). CS5 Kindle editions do contain links to downloadable project files, but the older books appear to have their links stripped out, which probably means the project files for those versions have been removed from the publisher's server. It's likely that at least some of the CS5 project files are different enough that they won't be useful to users of the CS4 or CS3 books. I haven't checked all of the CS4 and CS3 books out personally, but I'm posting this warning so that other buyers will be aware of the risk.
I'm a big fan of Adobe and their Classroom In A Book series. They have been the main source of info when I needed to learn Photoshop, Illustrator, and many other programs. This book helped me a great deal with the project I was working on in Flash and ActionScript.Having said all that I have to say that it is extremely lacking on teaching the ActionScript language. It has 14 real life projects to learn from in a do this, then do that, style with lite explanations as to why. Adobe supplies all of the graphics needed (in true Classroom In A Book fashion). I was able to do the project I was working on for a client by hobbling together code from the Adobe projects. Did it teach me ActionScript? No, it just made me a little more comfortable with the code. Now I have to study a much more in depth ActionScript book. The Classroom In A Book style of teaching Adobe products doesn't work very well for teaching programming languages.
I purchased this book after I read "Adobe Flash CS4 Professional Classroom in a Book" in order to get more insight on some the features of ActionScript 3.0. I wasn't disappointed. I thought the chapters were well organized. And everything worked the way the book said it would. Just follow the directions and you should do well.Of course, it's an introductory course. But once you finish, you should be able to work with the online materials to find what you need for more detailed information.
Overall this book has disappointed me. There are 14 chapters, each covering a different application with the objective of laying out lessons so readers can progressively learn how to code. Where it fails, is in explanations. Often you see "Insert this code", but there is insufficient reason why it's being done. Also there are some problems with the CD, some examples are corrupt and do not properly function when opened.
Good book. I still have it, but that's because AS3 is done-zo. Way to go Adobe, don't have native flash support and watch your word crumble around you.
Cheers,I bought this product because I wanted to learn Actionscript 3.0 with the visual aids/tutorials provided by the CD it comes with. Though I will openly admit it said, "CD is missing," in the fine print of the order I overlooked it and was horribly disappointed when I saw the condition of the book and even more-so when I realized my mistake. It never occurred to me someone would try to sell a training manual without including the files necessary for it to work. It's bad business practices and I will be more wary the next time.
This book really helped me a lot in learning action script 3.0 showing me how to create great scripting for my web videos, this was a great purchase for me and I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn this application.
I bought this for school. The prices here are so much better and cheaper in what's offered in the campus book store.

Bought this b/c the movie I've Been Waiting For You was based on this book, and I must say that I like the movie better. It's enough to keep you going. Like it's enough to keep me reading to the very end. But some parts were tacky. Like Eric is completely gold. Gold skin. Gold eyes completely gold. That just seems tacky to me. Or the kids don't sound like kids. The kids talk differently than I would expect kids to talk like. Or Lois Duncan doesn't seem to understand karma. She understands some New Age Wiccan karma. But karma in Buddhism is just cause and effect. Or how being drunk is enough to remember ones past life. Wouldn't every single drunkard remember his/her past life if that were the case? Or Sarah in THIS lifetime seems to be a lot to blame for Sarah's own misery. Like Ted Thompson brought up some good points. She kept whining about wanting to go back to Ventura insistently. She never gave Kyra a chance. She hated her and never made a real effort to get along with her. She didn't care about her mother's happiness, even though it was her senior year and she could just move out. Realistically, people change, you are an adult or close enough and don't like how your mother changed, move out. She would have only had to deal with her mother's new behavior for a year. People changing is a reality of life and they don't always change back. Usually when people change, it's permanent. (Except for drugs and other addictions.)It would be much easier to empathize with Sarah if she made a stronger effort to get along with the people in the town. Country music isn't as bad as she makes it out to be. I have to agree with Ted, she does act stuck up and snooty and just views everybody as backwards. The book has its highlights, though. Just not enough for me to bump it up to 4 stars. The highlights would be Charlie. His lines always made me laugh. And who doesn't know an Eric Garrett? There were a few "Eric Garretts" in my old school. We all know a guy who uses your friendship with him to play you as a fool.I'll probably make a youtube video on this later.
"Gallows Hill" is a very well crafted suspense/supernatural thriller. Although I don't usually go for the paranormal books, this one was presented in a way that was, for the most part, believable. It is also supposed to be a young adult book, but I found it entertaining for the not-so-young adults as well. The book starts with Sarah Zoltanne being forced to relocate from Ventura, California, to tiny Pine Crest, Missouri, for her final year of high school. She was forced to follow when her mother Rosemary, widowed for several years, met Ted Thompson at a teacher conference and fell irresistibly in love. Ted was still married, although separated, and had a teenage daughter, Kyra, who was only one year younger than Sarah. The move was particularly rough for Sarah as no child wants to move away from their friends for their last year of high school. Add to that the fact that Pine Crest was a small community where the children had known each other almost from birth, and Sarah and Kyra couldn't stand each other, and you get what was the makings of a pretty miserable senior year for Sarah. The class president, and anointed golden boy of Pine Crest, Eric Garrett, asks Sarah to help with the senior class fundraiser. They were holding a carnival in the gymnasium and Eric wanted her to be 'Madame Zoltanne,' fortune teller extraordinaire. Sarah tried every excuse she could think of to get out of it especially the fact that she didn't know the first thing about telling fortunes. Eric had a plan though. Kyra had a wireless radio and would feed info on all the people walking in Sarah's tent. Sarah would then put everything together and come up with a fortune. Her mother even had a crystal paperweight (which had a life of its own) that Sarah could use as a crystal ball.Pressured to try and 'fit in' by Ted and Rosemary, Sarah agrees. The night turned out to be a major success. People were astonished that a stranger knew so many details about them, many she had never even spoken with before. All was going very well until Charlie Gorman walked in. Overweight and uncoordinated, Charlie was the class whipping board and was constantly being teased. When Sarah looked in the crystal ball for Charlie, she saw him being pushed down a flight of stairs. She was so taken aback by this that she feigned a headache and, since the carnival was almost over, decided to call it a night. When Charlie showed up at school the next day with a cast on his arm, things started getting sticky for Sarah.Eric, having a hidden agenda of his own, pressures Sarah into holding private readings for cash. Kyra has a major crush on Eric and agrees to help. As she holds more fortune readings, Sarah sees things in the crystal ball which ultimately come to fruition. Add to this her nightmares about the Salem Witch trials and her growing friendship with Charlie, who is a proponent of reincarnation, and things start to spiral out of control for Sarah.I very much enjoyed reading this book and while the plot was not really surprising, it kept the pages turning. None of us know what's on the other side of the grave, so who can say what happens.
This book really touches the heart as it tingles the spine. I felt for heroine Sarah as she is haunted by the memories of young Betty Parris, who triggered the Salem Witch Hunt, and persecuted by her classmates. I almost cried when no one believed what she said about the drawing of the noose and about the dead crow. Another thing I loved was her relationship with the large-bodied-but-kindhearted-and-cute Charlie. That really touched my heart because I too was in love with a generously-sized gentleman. This book is well-crafted and entertaining and just plain excellent. Buy two copies. You'll wear out the first from reading it so much. Lois D. does it again. I think all her "teen-suspense" books are great, even though I said goodbye to my teenhood some years ago.
This was a good easy book I enjoyed reading it....I did find it a little slow moving but all in all I would recommend.
Exactly was I was looking for
Loved this book when I was younger and it only gets better with age.
Glad our girl escaped the Ozarks. Who wouldn't prefer to live in Ventura California. Or anywhere in California. Small towns can be deadly.
It was a somewhat interesting read. It seems to be geared towards younger children. Too many occult symbols in it for me though.

It's a great book if you know what it is that you are buying. Do not purchase it thinking that it is a "how-to draw manga characters" course. There are other books for that.
Granddaughter loves it- just what she wanted to continue her exploring drawing anime
A great help to anyone wanting to learn to draw Manga
Gift for my 10 yr old son. He loved it! It was full of the history of Manga, taught the basics and his drawings are quite impressive after only a week.
I bought this book a few weeks ago and i thought it would be exciting. Most information in this book is just about the background history of manga, how the manga is written, how to read it, about the materials, the type of character it includes, and just things like these. Now, the chapter about How to draw, is not nearly as good as it should be. Just a few pages, not a step-by-step on how to draw. The writers left out so much in my opinion. There are so many books on How to draw manga, please be careful so you don't waste your money and your time.
I've got this book and it's great from an art history perspective. If you are looking for a how-to, this one is not it. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't buy it again, knowing what I know about it now.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, August 2014: If a picture is worth a thousand words, what's the worth of photos of old clothing? In the gorgeously packaged Worn Stories, Emily Spivack has paired short essays with beautifully sparse photos of their subject: old sweaters, shoes, jackets, and other sentimental apparel. But even more fun than the eccentric clothing is the diverse cast of creatives she's assembled, from musicians (Roseanne Cash) to critics (Sasha Frere-Jones) to actors (Greta Gerwig) to comedians (John Hodgman) to artists who do a multitude of things (Maira Kalman). The tales are often steeped in nostalgia--a funny anecdote with a tinge of longing--but the sum of these anecdotes is something bigger, more universal. Old clothes have a particular smell, often not the same, but familiar to someone. --Kevin Nguyen

"A fascinating, poignant book." - Minneapolis Star Tribune"Worn Stories is absolutely remarkable in its entirety - a true labor of love that weaves this common thread of intensely personal, courageously vulnerable sartorial memories into a colorful tapestry of the human experience." - Brain Pickings"The one-page mini-memoirs, accompanied by a photograph of the piece of clothing, are intensely personal and yet universal. In this intriguing collection of short memoirs, Spivack interviews a number of people both famous and not. She has asked for a piece of clothing that evokes a piece of time for the owner. The resulting entries ensnare the mind with the everyday magic of an item. I do,however, suspect it is also her interpretation of the story in precise and elegant prose that further enhances these little worlds.I am captured by the uncanny spread of clothing and stories. Some are totemic such as first Converse sneakers, but others are prosaic such as a pencil skirt that stood for adulthood for its owner. Perhaps even more telling than the clothing we buy are those clothes we save through the years. I especially love the fact that some of these items are not lovely and will never be candidates for clothing lust or envy. This book is a lovely little peek into the role of our much maligned "stuff" that follows our travels by design or habit.
I accidentally hit the one touch order button on Amazon, and was going to cancel, but after I read the synopsis I decided this book might just be a keeper. I'm so glad I did. Some of the stories are funny, some are full of wisdom, and some will break your heart, but I enjoyed every single one. It's amazing how ordinary items of clothing can invoke so many memories and instantly transport us to another place and time. For me, the only thing that might have made it better, would have been a small thumbnail photo of each owner (or better yet, a picture of them wearing their item). I loved it!
As an image consultant, I'm always helping people make their wardrobe smaller and more functional, but my favorite part is getting to know and be amazed by the stories each piece of clothe can hold. I even study psychology to understand how much further a simple piece can go besides just making someone more beautiful.Emily just reassured why i got into this business in the first place: to getting to know (and help) people and to learn the amazing particularities each one of us have.I'm in love with this book.
I have this on Kindle which I read mostly on my i-phone. Therefore, the pictures are in color. However, its the stories that grab me more than the photos. Each is a little gem, a travelogue of a piece of clothing, and the impact it has on one person's life. Sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, sometimes charming. Each story is as different as each piece of clothing we are shown.
I enjoyed it greatly. Glimpses into the lives of people through a garment with personal meaning to them. It had a few too many statements from people in the clothing industry, but I enjoyed it so much overall, I still give it five stars. I chose it as a book for our book club, and in addition to discussing it, we all brought a garment and told about it to the group. Oral history, people's stories in a nicely focussed way to get into each person's daily life, not the overall arc of a life.
Clever, clever! Everybody has a favorite piece of clothing with a story behind it. This little anthology contains a multitude of suc stories from ordinary folk as well as the famous. My personal favorite was about a Girl Scout badge sash!
This book is an absolute treasure. I would carry it everywhere if I could, to remind myself of the beauty in mundane things, and the transcendent power of humans to weave stories into every part of life. A longtime favorite.
Everything about this book is lovely, but not in the sense of a brand new dress or a flawlessly tailored suit. Here is a moving story from a Holocaust survivor. There is a deep reflection from a very funny man about the dress he sometimes wears on stage. I'm not much for coffee table books, but this is one I'll savor--picking it up and putting it down, staring at one image and reading one story at a time--for this collection deserves to be cherished as much as the footy pajamas I wore as a teen-ager on freezing-cold nights and still can't bring myself to throw out.

I absolutely love this book. I had the second edition and so I had to get the third. It has an extra chapter and to me it was worth buying. This is an excellent book for coders. Plus, I believe this one has extra nuggets for CPT and the 2nd edition didn't.
This book is everything I expected and it is helping me prepare for the my medical coding course and exam!

An interesting book about the town of Venice and the people who actually live there- as opposed to the tourists. The people and places you meet in the book are interesting, but he just couldn't find the quirkiness and the mystery that he found in Savannah. Sorry, John. "Midnight" is one of my favorite books- next time, try New Orleans.
I read this book when it first came out, and I remember it as being one of the best books I ever read. It married a mystery with quirky characters, with history - all of the components that made "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" truly great. I recently bought the book and read it again, with hopes of recommending it to my book group. But alas, I remember it better than it was. I would recommend this book - but not for a book group. There really wasn't enough there for discussion. I personally got a lot out of it, because I read it right before taking a trip to Venice. It formulated my travel plans in the city. Some high points of my trip were going to a concert at La Fenice Opera House, and viewing the church that gave the book its title.
What a great book. The author relates everything that is great and not so great about Venice. Its history, its greats, its eccentrics, its social history, what Venice was, is and what it hopes to be. A fantastic book. A pleasure to read.
It's inevitable that readers of Midnight will have high expectations for Berendt's latest, and I, too, wanted to be charmed when I began Angels. Berendt failed to fire my interest in the first chapters, but I continued on and after plowing ahead found myself fully engrossed. I was rewarded for my perseverence.Berendt has managed to write vignettes that fall together in a theme of decadance amid beauty. Angels falling, indeed. An arrogant people resting on very old laurels, the world's most beautiful city requiring a league of wealthy New Yorkers for its preservation, and no particular thrust by its citizenry to rise up from the muck into which it's been sinking for centuries. There are juicy scandals. bits of glamor and frivolity, and sad glimpses of a city that is falling apart in more ways than the physical. The place is a fascinating mess. That's Venice: an agonizingly proud and crippled city held up only by its glorious past which remains in full evidence to its many visitors.Berendt makes a textual thread of the tale of the fire at the Fenice Theatre and the legal machinations to find blame, but it's more a book of short works that would stand alone. As such, it sits well with everyone's favorite works about Venice.
The book never seemed to take off or really finish. I would not recommend this book to a friend to read.
I find Berendt's style of writing engaging and his story telling an enjoyable way to explore history from a unique perspective. His access to people who had a front seat to noteworthy events gives a front row seat as mysteries unfold. I'm getting ready for a trip to Venice and this book added to my excitement. Only wish I could meet some of the people he had access to.
For anyone interested in a snapshot of Venetian elite living, although not quite. Venice seen by an American writer who was able yo cominglel with expatriates as well as a select number of Venetian upper crust. Very well done vignettes on Venetian history as promptef by the fire of the opera house. I found it good and absorbing reading but I am a historian .
I bought this book in the mistaken belief that it was a novel. In fact, it is a work of non-fiction, but its rich cast of characters might provide enough material for several novels; they leap off the page in all their obsessions, follies, and foibles with an intensity that seems to belong more to fiction than to sober fact. But then Venice, which is the setting of John Berendt's book, has always seemed a place of fantasy; perhaps that is why it has attracted so many expatriate artists over the centuries (Robert Browning, JMW Turner, Henry James, Richard Wagner, Claude Monet, Igor Stravinsky, and Ezra Pound, to name but a few), besides producing such great art of its own.Berendt arrives in Venice in January 1996, a day or two after the city's famous opera house, La Fenice (the phoenix, aptly named), had been completely gutted by fire. He decides to stay in the city for a long time, and the story of the investigation of the fire, raising the money for the theater's reconstruction, selecting between competing plans and bids, and the Byzantine process of gaining approvals and managing the rebuilding forms the major connecting thread of the book, ending with the theater's reopening in 2003. But there are other stories as well, often with strong novelistic overtones. One in particular -- an account of shady dealings in the disposal of a large cache of documents left by Ezra Pound -- Berendt sees as a virtual replay of the plot of Henry James' novella, THE ASPERN PAPERS, in the same Venetian setting.Berendt shares a nineteenth-century novelist's fascination with internecine feuds. There are two main ones in the book. The first details a split between the sons of the last great master of Venetian glass-making, Archimede Seguso, whose final works were created out of a personal response to the Fenice fire, which he watched from his apartment. Berendt has a way of making one brother seem an angel and the other the villain -- until he interviews the other, allowing the reader to see the situation from the opposite perspective and to make up his own mind. He uses the same technique in describing the feud between the Americans Larry Lovett and Bob Guthrie, the successive presidents of the Save Venice foundation. Here the dealings get a lot more unpleasant and leave a nasty taste in the mouth even after the book is finished. I think this is partly because these people occupy a social stratum far above that of most readers; I find myself asking of these and several other characters in the book: "How can you use your privileged position to behave like THAT?"For there is one quality that I do not like in this excellently-structured and well-written book: Berendt writes from the perspective of a superior gossip columnist and social snob. The whole book has an implied put-down of tourists and ordinary visitors. Berendt claims to write about the real Venetians, the people who live there the whole year round. But a high proportion of his characters are the movers and shakers, the Venetian contesse and marchesi, foreign royalty, captains of industry, millionaire expatriates, film stars, and a few powerful members of the city administration. Even his historians and connoisseurs have to be world experts. There seems to be little room for ordinary travelers and art-lovers who approach this special city with respect and wonder. Berendt takes delight in visiting the rich and famous in their palaces that others cannot penetrate, but the effect on this reader at least is one of exclusion, not access. Having spent many weeks in Venice as a student of art history, then a musician, and then on my honeymoon, I feel a sympathy with the place; but instead of extending my admittedly partial understanding, this book makes me feel that I do not belong there at all.My title, opera buffa, is also the title of one of Berendt's chapters; there is indeed a comic-opera quality through the entire book, the extended spirit of the Venetian Carnival, though I think less of opera than the crazy excess of a Fellini movie. But there is a softer side to the comic vision, verging on pathos, which Berendt handles especially well in his brief portraits of Venetian loners. Early on in the book, we meet Capitano Mario, an eccentric who dresses in a different uniform every day to perform perfectly useless tasks of splendid busy-ness. Then there is the Rat Man of Treviso, an industrialist who has made a fortune selling country-specific rat poison which tastes of typical leftovers from human food, only better. And a very moving chapter near the end tells of the apparent death by suicide of a well-known gay poet, who wanted to be known as "the man who loved others" but who had nobody truly to love him. Here, as the human comedy shifts into tragedy, Berendt touches a note that validates the underlying seriousness of his book, despite the baroque excesses of its upper crust.
