I was walking through a local bookstore when the cover of this book caught my eye, and I was impacted immediately. The cover photo alone evoked a huge number of emotions within me, and I just had to buy the book, though I have never purchased a book of photographs before. I took down the title and author, and ordered this book from Amazon.I am not surprised that this book evoked such strong emotions from the reviewers I've read on here so far. This is an astonishingly powerful book, and I've never seen anything like it. The incredibly evocative photographs are often coupled with a monologue by girls/young women. Both the photos and the monologues are exceptional looks deep into the psyches of girls and young women. There are average girls, popular girls, Latina girls, African American girls, girls at weight loss camp, girls at an eating disorder clinic, nude girls lap dancing....every kind of young woman imaginable. The photos hit me right in the gut....and I am shocked that I've never before heard of this author. Sometimes, the photos were disturbing, but only because they probably hit "too close to home." Sometimes, the photos were lovely and peaceful. Sometimes, the photos were shocking and beautiful at the same time.I don't like to "tell the whole story" in my reviews; I think that completely spoils the surprise element for someone reading a book such as this for the first time. So...let me just say that this book of photos is well worth the money; I'd recommend it to any woman who is well beyond her "young woman" years.
I first saw this exhibit at the CCP at the University of Arizona, when I was 18 years old. Since then, I have not been able to erase Greenfield's images from my mind. Not only are her photographs beautiful and powerful, but the testimonials that go with each photo are heartbreaking. After I saw the exhibit, I had to have the book... but I didn't end up buying it until years later. I was happy to find that the book has expanded content--more pictures, longer testimonials, an introduction by JJ Brumburg (excellent!) and an essay written by Lauren Greenfield herself. I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the psychology and sexuality of America's female population.
The first time I saw the work of Lauren Greenfield was when I told a friend that I'd be happy to see any film she liked, and we saw "The Queen of Versailles." I hated it! For my taste, too much like a reality TV show about a family I'd never want to meet. Then I read reviews that named her as an important photographer - and I was studying photography - so I bought this book. The photographs are very interesting, and so are the first person writings by their subjects. I'll make an odd comparison with a classically great photo book: "A Proust Souvenir." That book has beautiful old photographs of society people whom Proust used as models for his fiction, together with interesting write-ups about the photos, but they are nothing like the writeups by Greenfield's subjects (which might have been edited, since they are very good.) Greenfields superb photos raise curiosity about the subjects, and it is fascinating to read what they have to say about themselves. This book covers an intesting range of attitudes and ways of life within the "Girl Culture" world and I recommend it highly.
Of course, it is a cliche that every picture tells a story and a picture is worth a thousand word, but "Girl Culture" can't be described any other way. The pictures so well illustrate the struggles and concerns of today's teenage girl. The dramatic illustrations and accompanying stories prove just how hard it is to grow up female and maintain a sense of self and high self-esteem. Some of the pictures and stories will break your heart, others will inspire anger and disgust, but over all the emotions evoked by this book are powerful and motivating. This book is a must for understanding the lives of teenage girls.
Literally so amazing.
I bought this as an xmas present for my girlfriend who has become a big fan of lauren greenfield the last couple years while studying photography in college. The book was in pretty rough shape, but the pages themselves are nice and large with really cool full color pictures. Definitely get this if you can pick it up for a decent price.
A bit interesting to read at look at at first but as a woman, it quickly got old. Someone not living in the United States who was given this book might come to the conclusion that all U.S. girls, insecure, catty and valuing beauty of all else, growing up to be women who value the same. A better title? Material Girl Culture. Almost every single story and picture showed a bias towards fitting in (as girls) for their friends or standing out (as women) to catch a man, being sexually active (and desired) and/or being beautiful. You mean pre-teens to college-age girls are insecure? You're kidding! Being sarcastic here. After a while I stopped reading the entries. And don't mistake "girl" to mean girl. Grown women were shown primping at photo shoots, strip clubs, social events and fitness competitions. What would have made it more interesting? Girls in study groups and going to Girl Scout meetings (yes, Girl Scouts still exists) and women volunteering, attending church and going to professional jobs. A woman in doctors scrubs applying makeup? More interesting. I'm not denying that females desire to be pretty and beauty can get you things but what could have made this book more interesting are pictures showing beauty beyond the face and body.
Thought Provoking and moving. If there are young girls in your life, I would highly recommend this eye-opening photo documentary about the impact culture and media have on our young women.

I first came here by DC-3 in 1970, when Chiang Mai University was out in the country and oxcarts still brought goods to the Warorot Market. I came back many times through the years as a backpacker and moved here permanently three years ago. Laura has done a wonderful job of capturing so much that is new and luxurious in CM, at the same time honoring the timeless beauty of the old city and the Thai countryside. She puts new visitors in touch with Lanna-Thai traditions that make this such a special place—crafts that are available in the factories and villages where they are produced and Lanna culture (traditional dance, music and architecture) that has evolved into a vibrant modern art and music scene. And elephants! Once worshipped and ridden into battle, they still abound nearby at camps where visitors can interact up close and personal. The high-end French and Lanna restaurants she recommends that I have already tried are indeed excellent. But after reading Luxurious Chiang Mai, I want to try them all! Most important, now that I live here, are the rich variety of luxury hotels—in the old city, on bustling Nimman Road, and out in the country—that I can recommend to friends visiting from overseas now that our backpacking days are a memory.
A great, easy to read guide on the best of the best for Chiang Mai. I never knew there were so many luxurious hotels in Chiang Mai and they all look exceptionally well appointed with fantastic facilities. The innumerable quality spas discussed in this book really excited me. I was so happy the author considered good coffee places in Chiang Mail (critical for me!) and very importantly ethical elephant homes to visit. I would be curious to know of any speciality 5-star vegetarian options in any of restaurants listed.I also liked that the author considered trips out of Chiang Mai (although from the activities outlined for Chiang Mai it appears that if you want to be kept busy for a few weeks, one could easily just do that!). Highly recommended for all those wanting to enjoy the very best of Chiang Mai.
When my husband and I decided to take a trip to Thailand, I discovered this wonderful guide written specifically for Chiang Mai to start the planning process. I highly recommend using a book like this either in lieu of or in addition to trip advisor. Ms. Gibbs's book served as the perfect first step in the process of putting together a stay in Chiang Mai. The writing is spot-on, as is the editing.
I've been looking for the best hotels in Chiang Mai and this book has them all! I love the look of the Dhara Dhevi hotel and their spa too. Luxurious Chiang Mai has helped me plan my whole holiday, from start to finish. Recommended for all travellers from the US, not just wealthy ones - Chiangmai seems so affordable.
I bought this travel guide back in December last year and it was great! I found a lot of useful information that was not readily available on the internet. We got a really good deal for our spa package and hotel. The author has clearly done her research.
Perfect guide for finding the best places in Chiang Mai. It gave me some really great ideas.
I believe this book is a little bit overpriced but I downloaded it when it was free on promo. A friend of mine visited Chiang Mai last summer. Although summer is considered a low season in Thailand, he really loved this place and its unique atmosphere. I also traveled to Thailand a lot but haven't been to Chiang Mai yet. So I am really interested in this destination. This book gives all the necessary info for the traveler in Thailand. Whether you are a beginner, or you know the culture of this country already, you will find lots of useful things. E.g., if you haven't been to Thailand in November, you probably do not know what kind of holiday is Loi Krathong and how to celebrate it. This book will deliver to you this kind of info. And by the way, Chiang Mai is a great place to celebrate Loi Krathong. This city is more authentic and less spoiled by tourists and money than some of the popular places like Pattaya and Phuket. That's why people want to visit Chiang Mai although it's far away from the sea.In general, I liked how the info is presented in this book. But I also think the author could make a better book cover. It doesn't look that great, especially the fonts.
A must have guide for anyone planning a wedding here. I have lived in Chiang Mai for three years and didn't know a third of these locations. So glad to have this now that I am planning a wedding here.

The Venerable Bede is a "must have" book for anyone who aspires to know the history of the early English people. Monk, student, ardent believer and keen observer of his world, Bede speaks to us from an era that would otherwise be essentially dark. The Anglo-Saxon world kept nothing in writing. Centuries go by in which the scholar is forced to depend on archaeology and intuition to deduce truth. Venerable Bede is a sharp point of light for those who would know the era. Writing in roughly 731, at about sixty years of age, he takes a scatter gun approach to the world around him. Each of his chapters is short, matter of fact, and unblinking. Is he omniscient? No. But he can be depended upon to tell the truth as he sees it. His core theme is Christianity as the unifying force of Britain, and he never misses a chance to show us a miracle or explain a conversion or applaud the good works of a monarch. Through it all he is unselfconsciously giving us the history of a people, his people, and speaking to us from an era that defines the term "Dark Ages." This is a work along the lines of Gregory of Tours History of the Franks. It is, as I've said, an essential piece of reading for all who would know the era.
This is the "Venerable Bede" you've heard of, and entree to early English history -- including its Christianization -- is almost unfathomable without him. Not the easiest read, but it's all choice.
Wonderful translation of St. Bede's recounting of English history up to his time (mid 600s AD)Some extraneous information that meant nothing to me not being familiar with English geography but still informative narrative.
In this work, Bede set out to write the history Christianity in Britain. It covers the Roman invasions of Britain, the coming of the Anglo-Saxons, the conversion to Christianity, the rise and fall of the Arian and Pelagian heresies in England, and various historical events as they relate to the development of Christianity in England. The discussions of the Roman period are likely taken from other histories. This is not a general history of England (for that, you want to also read The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as that work contains more material of general historical interest).Bede's work is fascinating, despite its narrow focus, for a couple of reasons. First, he provides a window into the view of the religious values of Anglo-Saxon England and it is interesting to compare this work with Orkneyinga Saga: The History of the Earls of Orkney (Penguin Classics) and The Journey Through Wales and The Description of Wales (Penguin Classics), both of which provide additional views into the religious sentiments of the Middle Ages. Secondly, he provides one of only a few early histories of the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons.I found the translation to be quite accessible and easy to read, though in a few places it probably could have done with a few more footnotes. For example, Bede's insistence that the main ethnic groups in Britain were the Irish, the Welsh, the Picts, and the English makes sense if you realize that the Scots were considered Irish, and indeed that "Scotia Major" was a name for Ireland, but if you don't have this background it is a bit confusing. All in all these were minor problems however and did not overly detract from reading the work. This is one of the primary sources for studying early Anglo-Saxon history.
I find it amazing that I never heard of this book in the Canadian education system. It really is an essential part of understanding Anglo-saxon character and history.
The Venerable Bede, priest and monk of Jarrow, well educated in Greek, Hebrew, and Latin, documented the first history of the English nation, and in doing so earned the noble appellation "Father of English history." It is interesting that the first English history is not a secular, but an ecclesiastical one, brimming with tales of saints, nuns, miracles, and portents. The work begins with a succint backround of Britain under Roman dominion, up to a more detailed account of Britain under the rule of Kentish and Anglo-Saxon kings; it ends nearly around Bede's own times(early 700's). Some important letters are preserved within from Gregory the Great, which show how the young church in England corrisponded with the Church of Rome, and how many ethical and doctrinal matters were solved during the young Church's growth. Unlike many of Bede's contemporaries, his narrative is never dull; and although he remains quite uncritical, the stories he tells are always charming and eloquent. This is a great source to understand the Christianization of Europe...it is a must have.
Awesome reference work. Some works of history are all we have today to use as puzzle pieces of what went on in the past and, of course, Bede is always there as a possible piece. We have to rely on these works because they were there in the past as "eye witnesses". A library must have.
This book is the "must read" for all serious students of English history. IT is the basis of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles and all histories that follow. This intellectual powerhouse preserves the keys to our way of life.

As an instructor using the book for the first time to teach an undergraduate course, I was generally pleased with the scope and content, although I supplemented many chapters with updates in key areas given that much of the 2012 edition was written four or more years ago. As with most basic textbooks covering a broad range of subject matter some parts provide a greater in-depth analysis than others. The use of one page case summaries is a good approach for students who have no legal training but results in some situations where the information provided is incomplete. Although I have a hard copy I also "rented" the Kindle edition so I could use it on my iPad, with the understanding that I could choose to "purchase" that edition for an additional payment later in the year. Unfortunately, Pearson discontinued the Kindle edition and in doing so deprived me of being able to preserve my highlighting and comments. I plan to the extent possible to avoid purchasing or recommending Pearson textbooks in the future.
Great book, I recommend it. Had fun reading it
I will recommend this book to those that may be looking for a international law book, but with specific details.
Excelent condition
Was as expected
The book covers all most all aspects of IL, from the Law of Stateless persons, to the law of the sea, to special situations, this book really hit on broad key concepts. As a non-pol-sci major, the book was a great introduction to the field. The book did however lack key figures, or placed a under emphasis the roles played by these persons in major points of historical law. (most likely edited for space)The book was shaped funny, but as you use it more you become used to it.The book does a great job in highlighting pivotal points in IL, and the cases that went along with them. The flow of the book was great, but at points did drag on points for too long, aka EEZ (Exclusive Econ Zone), and skipped almost entirely on others, such as trafficking in persons.Overall, good intro book.
Few books on international law ever touched upon the problem of the legal status of the divided status. Yet Prof. von Glahn has a section specifically devoted to the discussion of the problem of divided states under international law. Also, I found his use of cases to illustrate the various issue in international law especially helpful. Otherwise, the teacher and students have to go to another case book such as the one put out by Briggs to find the cases.
Omg the condition that this book came in. Unbelievable. The pages were falling out of it. However, it was cheap so I decided to keep it.
