It's a 'lampoon' the characters are supposed to be absurd.The book is everything you would expect from a Harvard Lampoon. The framework of the story is reasonably faithful to the original book, but all of the characters are changed to make the tale humorous.I'm not a huge fan of literary slapstick, but I found the book quite readable and somewhat amusing,
I've never seen the movie or read the book this was a parody of. But I read a bit of it and then my teenage daughters got a hold of it and I've never seen it again. If I find it I might finish reading, or maybe not.

We love books! I buy so many books my husband tells me we don’t need more. That being said, this book is cute but hard to read to kiddos. It was difficult for me to read the dialect used in this book and for the kids to understand what I was saying and what I meant. We read every single day and have so many types of fiction and nonfiction and this one just does not work for us. I wish the author had used a more normal dialect when writing so it was easier to read... and I’m from the south!
I like that it was coming in time as expecting for school project. Good packaging as well!I don’t like its bad print. Each line thru 1/2 of the book was being cut off, none of us can figure out the meaning of missing words. I was so disappointed with the book but don’t return due to cost of return ing is more than the value of itself. Feel bad!
I bought this for my 8 year old grandson and he enjoyed it so much he read it in 2 days and couldn't wait to tell me about it. Very happy I purchased it. Thank you!
When I saw all the five-star reviews listed under this book, I wondered whether the author had done a good job of rounding up family members and friends to write reviews...nonetheless after reading the first free part available on Amazon and not seeing anything better around I decided to give the book a try. Initially I was a bit apprehensive that it might not have enough action for my two boys (aged 6 and 10). Well, all I can say is they absolutely loved this book! It was intriguing and mysterious and they hung onto every word of it. Those five-star reviews are all well deserved! And I am adding another one. A good, clean, adventurous, mysterious time travel story for young kids! Grammar is not my main concern but I certainly did not spot any errors anywhere either.
I'm an avid reader raising a book-loving 8 year old boy however it is not often our reading interests cross paths. He was SO enthusiastic about enjoying "The Secret Lake" that I had to start reading it as well. When he finally finished he was so very excited to share his thoughts with me that I had to hurry up and finish because he was busting with spoilers.You won't see many amazon reviews from us. We believe reading is a very individual past-time. But we couldn't miss out on encouraging Miss Karen Inglis to please write more about these characters and telling everyone who might be thinking "to read or not to read" this ---read! Its well worth fitting into your to-be-read pile.I'd say it has just the right balance of detail and speed/flow for my son's age group or younger but I was sort of left wishing I knew more about the delightful characters, young and old, in this book. And if I can figure out how to get his review on here tonight I'm sure he might even share some of his 'what next' wishes.Great story!

I liked this book a little sad at the end but still a good ending wish there was more to it like what was in the chests in Emma's house and what happened in the future..will there be a second book that would be neat

This is a great book for those with a programming background and little to a moderate knowledge of the PERL language. It has very good and useful examples that are clearly explained. The first edition is definitely one of my most used language reference books that has saved my bacon a number times. This latest edition is even better.

This book could have saved me hours on the net getting answers to specific problems dealing with Perl scripts I was writing for a client. If you know the basics of Perl and have programmed much with it then you know the frustration of knowing what you want it to do but needing to resolve one minor issue to get it to work. This book contains a lot of the most common problems and solutions. It is not meant to teach you Perl, but to resolve those sticky problems that stop your progress until you figure them out. After starting with some best practices advice it moves into scalar variables and lists, arrays and hashes, operators and precedence, conditionals and loops, regular expressions, subroutines, references, built-in variables, built-in functions, file handling, built-in modules, data structures, creating packages and modules, creating classes and objects, debugging and style guide, CGI programming, Perl and XML, and secure scripts.Each solution states the function to be used, how it operates, an example of its use, an explanation of what occurs in the example, and a list of related solutions with the page number. A fast and easy quick reference for when you get stumped, Perl Core Language: Little Black Book, Second Edition is highly recommended and a book you will want to keep close at hand.
This book is targetted at "Intermediate to Advanced", though I think it's more intermediate than advanced. The only reason why it isn't "Beginner" is that the book goes straight to the point. There is no auxilliary or "good to know" discussions. This book presents Perl, how it is used, and that is the end of it.I read the book almost cover to cover the first time, and it organizes information in a logical manner, and all basic Perl goodnesses are covered. Each section is divided into "In brief" - a summary listing of everything covered there - and "Immediate solutions" that get you started and finished in next to no time.Now I keep it around as my primary Perl reference book. The index is extremely well done, and I haven't needed to go beyond it much at all.There are just a couple of issues with this book:- there are a few minor typos (I've found 2) that may stump a new Perl user- list v array, and qq v quotes are never really explained.The book isn't oversized, so it's also portable. Highly recommended.
You can't go wrong with this book, even if you're a Perl beginner. Intermediate users will find the book excellent. Perl is a superb language.I've been impressed with the "little black book" series from Paraglyph Press. These books get straight to the point with lots of examples and very little fluff. Perl Core Language follows this path. Its size and content is perfect for intermediate programmers. I like the way Holzner deliberately avoids a Unix bias. Perl is more than that. You won't find details on installing Perl onto any particular computing platform.Programming beginners might need more expansive explanations--for example pg. 83 has a table of precedence for operators and they're listed tersely, without name definitions. That kind of focus is refreshing. A smaller, well-thumbed book is more valuable than a huge tome you never haul out.I could have benefitted from additional background in Perl's underpinnings. I'll be buying other Perl books 'cause this one made me a fan.
