Review
Advance praise: 'Philosopher Keith M. Parsons and physicist Robert Zaballa have teamed up not only to write a brilliant narrative of the nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands, with a focus on the events experienced by the participants, but also a thoughtful meditation on contrasting historical claims, endorsing the ones that seem most reasonable to them.' Joseph M. Siracusa, The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Melbourne, Australia, and co-author of A History of U.S. Nuclear Testing and Its Influence on Nuclear Thought, 1945-1963Advance praise: 'The authors have written a highly-readable but also technically well-informed account of a time thankfully now passed - the era of atmospheric nuclear testing. It seems especially relevant today, when some advocate a return to nuclear tests by the superpowers.' Gregg Herken, author of Brotherhood of the Bomb: The Tangled Lives and Loyalties of Robert Oppenheimer, Ernest Lawrence, and Edward Teller

Robert Cullen. Bombing is here! Thank you!
The average American possessing a basic knowledge of the history of nuclear weapons, at least to my anecdotal experience, believes nuclear weapons have been used twice since their creation, both times by the United States. The American military dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, to end World War II, within days of each other, in August 1945. This history is factually incorrect. It is quite true that nuclear weapons have been used only twice in war, but they have been detonated many times in testing, and the results have been devastating.Keith M. Parsons, a professor of philosophy, and Robert A. Zaballa, a nuclear physicist, have written a concise account of the remarkable yet tragic history of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific. In “Bombing the Marshall Islands: Cold War Tragedy,†Parsons and Zaballa recount the fascinating events chronicling nuclear testing and the impact on those physically affected by the blasts. The authors’ descriptions of the blasts themselves are truly frightening. One of a series of tests was named Castle Bravo, which they describe as “a stupendous blast of 15 megatons – the equivalent of the simultaneous detonation of fifteen million tons of conventional high explosive. The fireball reached four miles in diameter and excavated a crater 250 feet deep and 6,500 feet across. The mushroom cloud rose to a height of over sixty miles in less than ten minutes. The power of the blast greatly exceeded expectations.â€According to the authors, “During that time, the United States conducted sixty-seven nuclear tests on and in the vicinity of Bikini. The combined explosive yield of these events was 108 megatons – the equivalent of one Hiroshima-sized bomb detonated daily for nineteen years. As a result, some of these islands were grossly polluted with radioactive fallout and rendered uninhabitable… The beauty of basic physics is part of the story, but so are terror, suffering, and death.â€One of the reasons this book is so valuable is in its inherent fairness. The authors do not take political sides on the issue. In fact, they take care to sympathize and state the arguments for both points of view. While the testing clearly had awful effects, Parsons and Zaballa clearly explain why the United States felt the urgent need to test during the Cold War period in order to assure the survival of the United States. They write, “One view was that these weapons were purely evil and their eradication was the only hope for humanity. The opposed view was that eradication was impossible, at least at that time, and that deterrence was the best way to avoid a nuclear catastrophe.â€Describing their book as a “scholarly popular history†written for all, the authors write, “The lesson we draw is straightforward: When nuclear war is not only conceived as possible but is planned as a basic element of policy, the risks run during the period of nuclear testing are completely unsurprising.â€One physicist recorded his observation of one test. “Suddenly there was an enormous flash of light, the brightest light I have ever seen or that I think anyone has ever seen. It blasted; it pounced; it bored its way right through you. It was a vision that was seen with more than the eye. It was seen to last forever.â€The authors continue, “The initial flash may seem to last forever, but in a few seconds the explosion dims to the point where it is bearable by the human eye. The light resolves into a massive fireball, like a second sun, still intensely brilliant. Then it quickly transforms into a great column of fire, thrusting upwards at terrific speed and displaying a spectrum of terrific colors. The iconic mushroom cloud forms and rapidly rises, finally topping off miles into the atmosphere, far higher than any mountain. The devastating shockwave propagates rapidly outward from the hypocenter.â€They quote a report as stating, “It is clear that the use of this weapon would bring about the destruction of innumerable human lives; it is not a weapon that can be used exclusively for the destruction of material installations of military or semi-military purposes. Its use therefore carries much farther than the atomic bomb itself the policy of exterminating civilian populations.†The authors continue, “Because the hydrogen bomb would have no inherent limits on its destructive capacity, such a weapon could only be used to devastate vast areas and kill huge numbers of civilians.†They conclude: “Therefore, a super bomb might become a weapon of genocide.â€While residents of the islands were forced to evacuate for the testing, the authors chide the United States government for dispossessing people on the promise that humanity was being served without fully explaining the impact on their lives. Nevertheless and contrary to promises, residents almost certainly were never going to be able to return to their native lands, at least not as a safe locale. The effects are difficult to contemplate. Upon returning to one island, “…they found that all of their traditional foods had changed. One traditional food is the arrowroot, which is a starch similar to tapioca that is obtained from the rhizomes of a local plant. After exposure to the fallout, the arrowroot died or shrank in size, and burned the moth when consumed. Other foods had changed color, which made them appear unappetizing and maybe dangerous.â€On birth defects, the authors state, “…the islanders suffered an unusually large number of miscarriages and births of children with severe defects. Some women gave birth to unformed fetuses that were not recognizably human, which midwives referred to as jellyfish babies.’†Horrible stuff. In addition to this remarkable history, the Appendices at the back of the book actually serve as terrific primers for physics in general. It was the first time, at an author’s recommendation, that I read an Appendix first in order to better understand a book.“Bombing the Marshall Islands†is a fascinating journey to a complex time in American and human history. This book deserves a wide readership as Parsons and Zaballa treat the subject with great knowledge and expertise, as well as sympathy and understanding.

"[A]n essential primer for anyone considering going to China for study…serves as a good introduction to Chinese culture for non-Chinese thinking of spending some time there—either working, studying or living. [T]he book is a manual to read before you leave and to have on hand for reference once you arrive." —About.com China Travel"Studying in China is the most complete advice you can get before investing time and fortune on study abroad. Here you can find what you need to know before embarking on a China study program, while engaging with the program, and then understanding better what happened after you return from the program. It may include information you do not want to know…but you really need to know it." —Galal Walker, Ph.D., Professor of Chinese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, and the Director of the National East Asian Languages Resource Center, the Midwest US-China Flagship Program, and the Critical Language Scholarship Program, The Ohio State University"I can't think of a more astute or engaging guide to China than Patrick McAloon. He gives you the good, the bad, and the ugly of being a foreign student in China, without the tendency to romanticize or demonize that many guidebooks are prone to. This is accurate, sensible information by an extremely accomplished and prescient author. Make sure this book is in your duffle bag or back pocket when you board your flight!" —Chris Livaccari, Upper Elementary Principal and Chinese Language Program Director, International School of the Peninsula Senior Advisor, Asia Society"This book is a must-read for anyone who plans to study abroad in China. It is detailed, extensive, and packed with extremely useful and up-to-date information provided by someone who has first-hand knowledge and who has done substantial research in the subject. McAloon knows China well. Most importantly, he knows what China-bound individuals need to know in order to make the most out of their study in China experience. I will definitely recommend this book to my students." —Yanfang Tang, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chinese Studies, and the Director of the Chinese Studies Program at the College of William & Mary"China is changing faster than any other nation on earth today. As someone who has lived in China and has counseled families moving to China, I found this book an excellent resource for an American (or anyone from a western country) thinking about going to China to study, or moving to China for any reason. Not only is it very thorough, covering everything you need to prepare for the move, the move itself, and settling in, but it gives a fabulous insight into how to get to become comfortable with Chinese culture and Chinese individuals. I especially like the way the author writes. He has a personal and relaxed style which makes the reader feel comfortable, while pre-warned about the culture challenges he is about to experience. If I knew someone considering a move to China, I would definitely recommend they read this book. If they are still uncomfortable, it probably isn't a good decision for them.
Patrick McAloon succeeded in authoring an excellent book on China as an aid to student study. This publication is one of the most comprehensive I have reviewed over the course of researching a book that I am writing on the same subject with a slightly different focus. Patrick's work provides a wealth of information on the country to include an excellent background on the country, its unique culture and many other fascinating details pertaining to the country. I have traveled extensively in the East to include China and on reflection, I wish I had discovered Patrick's book earlier. It is a must have for students headed in this direction. I highly recommend this book to students traveling to China with the intent of ensuring they get the most out of their journey. As a special gift Patrick encloses his own mapping of the country as a handbook supplement that is very well done. Posted by: Patrick D. Huff, https://www.linkedin.com/pub/patrick-d-huff/10/300/704
This book certainly takes the ignorance out of traveling to China, even for non-student travelers. Is any conveivable subject not addressed? And in a practical, readable, humorous way? The author gives examples from his own experiences and those of student groups he has led. The book is anything but boring, and is even quite quotable. One istaken through every process step-by-step, with Chinese characters inserted where they might be useful to show someone when you need help. Also included are pitfalls for foreigners, preconceptions of Americans on the part of Chinese (none of them good), the importance of relationships with Chinese, banquet etiquette, and on and on. Take a look at the Table of Contents on the Amazon entry, and you'll see what I mean. Enjoy!
Good information!
Wow. Meticulously organized so you can easily find what you need, and well written in a light, conversational style that informs you without putting you to sleep. It's almost like having the author with you.
Newbies to China and future study abroad students will quickly learn the acronym TIC in this book, which stands for This Is China. Studying in China has TIC down to a T. As a previous Chinese language student, I always thought travel guide culture and history sections were crammed with too much info and hard to digest. Studying in China simplifies it, puts it in smaller chunks and adds true experience and expertise to getting the most out of your study adventure in the Middle Kingdom.Living and studying in a foreign country is very rewarding but can require a lot of mental energy and adaptation. Dr. Pat McAloon provides very specific details of China life and sprinkles humor throughout that helps make light of the cultural understanding process. Some that stuck out to me were propane tanks in taxicab trunks (might be a problem for your big bag), the blind person path on a Chinese sidewalk and what’s all that information on a Beijing to Shanghai train ticket.I also really liked the explanation of the Chinese relationship words guanxi and renqing. Many articles and media try to pin down what it is for the sake of better understanding Chinese relationship behavior. Dr. McAloon’s take gives very basic and fundamental action steps to develop, build and maintain Chinese relationships in the short-term and long-term. For both students and business people alike, one can gain much insight into what China is today.
This is one of the most comprehensive books available for students who will be studying abroad in China. As a study abroad advisor, I am comforted by the fact that my students who will read this book will be completely prepared for their time abroad. The most impressive thing is that Patrick McAloon is able to make 304 pages (which these days is hard to get students to read) is laid out in a very easily comprehendible way and is a very quick read despite its density. Students studying abroad don’t often think of the intricacies that come with things such as buying a plane ticket from home to a smaller city in the host country. However, Mr. McAloon breaks that down and talks about the pros and cons of purchasing one type of ticket versus another, things the students would have never thought of on their own. This book also tells you how to travel, what to bring with you, how to handle customs, and is accompanied by pictures to help the reader understand and be comforted in the process. Any concern a student studying in China or even someone simply traveling to China has is covered in this book. I strongly recommend it to everyone planning on spending time in China.

Very informative and easy even for a beginner
Quick delivery, easy to understand!!
Am a novice and have found this book to be very helpful!
Not what I expected. I was looking for more depth. If I had seen this in the bookstore, I would not have purchased. Did not meet my needs but not worth returning.
This book is so basic that it is worthless. For example, there is only one example on the "if" function and it covers only the if and if ... else formats. There is no index, only a table of contents. I should have checked the number of pages...86 pages cannot begin to cover even the basics of Excel.
Easy to use.
This guide was too simple to be helpful.
Its terrific! Ive looked a long time for this format, and it is 1)super-easy to lookup terms, 2)simple, step-by-step instructions, even for advanced functions. Great reference i wont be without: even charts are de-constructed. Really solid value for the money.

The narrative is very fluid and I like the way the author swings between (i) the history of financial markets in 70/80’s, (ii) the rise and fall of Salomon Brothers and (iii) his own personal experiences inside the firm. The amplitude of the themes changes a lot, from broad to narrower topics, but the author manages to crisscross between them while holding the links and maintaining the flow. Besides, it is interesting to see how transparently the author shows that some prejudices people have about banks and financial markets professionals were intensely true. The book made me wonder how it may have been to live in such a unique work place and to regularly sleep and dine at places perhaps as impressive as some salaries mentioned: Le Périgord, Bristol, Tante Claire, Plaza Athenée, Claridge's, everything charged to the firm’s expense account. As the book mentions, some traders viewed the expense account as a soft-dollar compensation system.
Michael Lewis wrote this, his first book, in 1989. I was thirteen years old when it was released - it was one of the rare nonfiction books that received enough fanfare and furor that it penetrated my world. I didn't read it, of course, but I was aware of it because it was talked about on a variety of TV shows and news broadcasts.I didn't read a Lewis book until Moneyball, but after that I was hooked and gobbled up The Big Short, Flashboys and the Undoing Project. After finishing his book on those Israeli psychologists, I picked up Boomerang, The Losers, The New New Thing and now Liar's Poker. Despite enjoying all of the aforementioned books (The Losers is a dream for people that follow politics), I was hesitant about Liar's Poker because I figured it was a dated book about Wall Street in the 1980s.I am pleased to say that my concerns turned out to be unjustified. After graduating from the London School of Economics, Lewis fell into a job at Salomon Brothers (it was eventually absorbed into Citigroup). His first few months were spent with 120+ other young professionals with newly minted premium degrees (lots of Harvard and Stanford MBAs) in the Salomon Brothers highly regarded training course (an indoctrination series, really).A few chapters covers the training course and the various professionals they were exposed to, as well as a history of both Salomon Brothers and the bond market. Lewis goes to work in the London office, where he was moved from a lowly trainee to a lowly geek. He learns at the heels of two extremely gifted salesmen and within six months, after completing a major trade, grows from a geek to a BSD (read the book).Lewis was sitting next to the CEO of Salomon Brothers on the day of the Black Monday Crash and provides us with the helpless reactions of the traders on the floor, as well as the calculating response of his two mentors. Less than a year after the crash, Lewis left Wall Street because the belief in the value of money and those who made it had been shattered (he also acknowledges that he made enough to be comfortable and obviously wanted to write a book). The housing collapse and stock market crash of 07-08 had it's roots in the 1980s scenes where Lewis describes the unscrupulous taking advantage of customers and the belief by the Street that the government would always bail them out. 28 years after it was first published, the book is still relevant and quite entertaining.
Michael Lewis has an uncanny ability to take a subject----any subject----even one as typically "mundane" and boring as the financial world, and somehow bringing it to life in such a way that the reader is riveted from start to finish. I first read this book when it was new and was utterly astounded by his humor and ability to explain even the most convoluted economic concepts and turn them into "page turning" reading. I have since read/purchased all of his books, as well as having read his articles in Vanity Fair, and have yet to be disappointed. Whether he is entering the world of Silicon Valley's techie boom, NFL football, or the economic crisis in the Euro Zone he never fails to deliver a brilliantly written, absorbing, and somehow humorous take on his subject. I am certain that there is no topic which he cannot investigate and write about in the most entertaining yet informative way. This is a replacement copy of my original book which has been lost in our library's cosmos, but it is one that I simply must own. Long before Leo's "Wolf of Wall Street" or Michael Douglas's "Greed is Good" portrayal, there was Michael Lewis' spot-on depiction of the crazy 80's Wall Street boom and its excess. I really can't speak highly enough of Mr. Lewis' talent and writing ability.
I am a huge Michael Lewis fan and this was the one book of his that I had not read. The book, in my opinion, is by far his weakest one - which is understandable as I believe this is one of his earlier works. The book follows his short career at Saloman Brothers in the 1980's. It is interesting to see inside of a Wall Street firm at that time and to see the ethics (or lack thereof) - only on Wall Street is it acceptable to use your "customers" as a place to offload junk product that you do not want to keep for yourself. The book is really a timeline of his employment at Salmon Brothers and, unlike his other books, really lacks any other central theme to hold it together. It is mildly entertaining, but if this had been the first book of his I read, I would have missed out reading all his other fantastic books.
Lewis is prolific and entertaining. I have read only half of the books he has written but someday I will have read them all - he's that good. This book describes his early days, just out of college, as an investment banker. The locker room language may be a bit coarse for some readers; this book was not on my church's book club list. It is funny, probably 97% true and mainly a good read. The mammoth-sized egos which are depicted are similar to what I have seen in many sales environments and the military where everything seems and may even be, bigger than life.On more than one occasion, I had to stop reading because I was laughing so hard, wondering, "Did he really say that?! Wow! Are there really people like that?!" My early life in Manhattan, right after college was an adventure, but a mild one compared to the stories in this book.

Getting into homeopathic pillsI use lots of hylands so this book will help me.Saw it at the health food storeHere about 50 % cheaper
I had trouble deciding between this book and Miranda Castro's "The Complete Homeopathy Handbook". I ended up buying both and they are both good books on Homeopathy to have in your library. They each offer some basic information on Homeopathy as an introduction and each adds some information the other book does not contain. My review is basically showing how the two books differ in format to help one decide if they only buy one. Again, I really love both books and I am glad I have them both.Hershoff's book contains pictures or charts of the different systems such as circulatory, etc, with different parts of the body and ailments pinpointed and six remedies related to that image; types of pain and diagrams of headaches and the remedy for a specific headache location . The next section contains a list of 101 ailments with a brief description and six most commonly used remedies listed. Each remedy has a brief list of symptoms like a mini Materia Medica to help select the remedy. Castro's book on the other hand is laid out like a Materia Medica listing both External (cremes, ointments, etc.) and Internal remedies. The Materia Medica portion is more extensive than with Hershoff's book and with the Hershoff book I find my self consulting my actual Materia Medica book for more information. Castro's Materia Medica portion is followed by a repertory guide of symptoms and modalities to help find the correct remedy. Both books discuss how to prescribe and use dosage in giving a remedy. Castro's book gives a small chart about dosage in the beginning of her book, while the Hershoff book lists a dosage recommendation along with each ailment. Castro's book provides a sample repertorising chart with some sample cases to help one learn how to take a case and find the correct remedy.I hope this provides some information on how both books are laid out and which one best fits your approach. The Hershoff book is more basic by seeing the ailment and the recommended remedy. The Castro book is more like working with a Materia Medica and this takes more work and is not for someone wanting a quick solution. I prefer using the Materia Medica approach and that is why with Hershoff's book I still go further by consulting the Materia Medica for more information.Again both books have information not contained in the other book so you will learn something by owning both of them.
People are always stating things like "nonsense" or trying to preach how it is simply 'sugar pills' or 'placebo'. I can state that my family is very conservative and believes in going to doctors. They believe that medicine heals and honestly didn't so much question the medicine since it was considered 'medicine'. Alot of quotes, I know.Yet, despite all criticism and disbelief: - My wife of 12-years *now* has a working treatment for her post-menstrual migraines which occur monthly. Three globules under the tongue and within 10-minutes the headache is gone. Every month, like clockwork. - My children have not been in to the doctor's office due to illness in 2-years now. After beginning homeopathic treatment we removed my son from daily Omeprazole(Prilosec) - which is a common treatment for recurring ear infections and the usual stomach issues. Homeopathic treatment cured him of constant ear infections. - My son was also being treated for MRSA (inside the ear) which is contracted in the hospital at birth. The first two-years of his life he had been prescribed 49 rounds of antibiotics which never cured the MRSA. He had 3-sets of ear tubes, adenoids removed, and one additional 5th surgery to attempt a cleaning and clearing of the MRSA. Our ENT doctor (ear nose and throat), the pediatric doctor, family doctor, and even St. Jude's top doctors could not cure the MRSA. My poor child has lost hearing in his ear and we are simply praying that he doesn't have any long-term damage that will show up in the future - to his kidneys, liver, etc. (All due to the antibiotics)** I began researching homeopathy and within two-weeks my son's MRSA was cured. His ears stopped draining, his pain stopped, and the child - for the first time in his life could hear my voice without sounding as if he was underwater. I hold homeopathy with the highest honor possible - it saved my child's life. The ENT doctor's have since began using the very treatment I used on my son and are publishing results. It treats colds, flu, allergies, congestion, MRSA, bacterial infections, and I even saved my newest dog of Parvo with it. (Not because we didn't vaccinate - this is another story...)*** A pug was dropped off at the local shelter and the family simply didn't want it they said... We adopted the dog 3-days later and he was vaccinated again for everything (since noone was sure if he was ever vaccinated in his lifetime). The pug is 8-months old. We brought him home and within 24-hours he was vomiting profusely, terrible diarrhea, and lethargy. A visit to the vet resulted in them finding worms in the fecal sample - likely caught from the animal shelter. They dewormed the dog and we brought it back home with the idea he would be much better the next day. * Day 2: The dog is in worse shape than the day before. Called the vet and they want the dog brought in again as he should have been recovering and back to his old self at least 50% of the way after the shot of de-wormer and anti-nausea provided. They realize something else is wrong and run a distemper/parvo test. Distemper was negative but parvo was positive. How can this be? Apparently, parvovirus takes 4-5 days to incubate and show symptoms. Additionally, it may not show up on tests until that time. Our guess is the previous owners never vaccinated the dog and he was exposed to parvo upon being dropped at the shelter. The timeline fits, now we have a new pup with parvo. The vet offers 3 options: Euthanize, provide just support (fluids) hope he gets better, or throw everything at it and treat him with Tamiflu and other meds.We opted for the third but 36-hours later he was just as bad, if not worse. Between the worms and parvo - his intestinal tract was in terrible shape and simply wasn't going to make it....Day 4 (PM): So I begin researching and beg the vet to let me visit him and give it another 48-hours. My family visited the dog and to the veterinarian's (near-laughing response to homeopathic suggestion) I gave the dog a high dose of homeopathic treatment for the bacterial infection (possible sepsis) and for the parvovirus (flu treatment) - as well as a third-dose for the diarrhea and vomiting.Day 5 (AM): Veterinarian calls and states that his diarrhea has stopped, still has not eaten but was keeping down water. Appeared to be in better spirits and despite all odds - honestly looks like he's recovering. I come in and repeat the doses once again.Day 6 (AM): Veterinarian releases the dog to us after he had eaten and had a bowel movement. That was two-weeks ago and our healthy little pug is happy to be here with us. Homeopathy saved his life. Now those are two ridiculously long stories but they all come to a point. Homeopathic medicine works and people honestly don't have to believe it. I just ask they try it - try it and see. Then make your judgement. On to this book: This book is excellent! I am always referring to this book and Andrew Lockie's Family Guide - these are two of the best homeopathic books out there. If you own a homeopathic book - this is the one for you.***Another note: It's not necessarily homeopathic but we have also treated multiple staph infections within family or recommended to friends - all with 100% effective results - with Manuka Honey (16+) - for external staph infections on the skin - Manuka honey can provide a cure within 48-hours. (Sadly this didn't work with my son since his was deep within his neck - but on the skin, don't use antibiotics as a first treatment. Use Manuka Honey first - if it doesn't work, then use antibiotics.I hope someone finds this information useful and I wish you all the best of luck.
I've purchased at least 3 copies of this book. This is my go-to guide for my homeopathic remedy kit, and although we have many books on the subject, this is by far the easiest one to follow. With it, I've gotten wonderful results time and time again for many years now. I finally got an extra copy to keep at my parent's house so I'll have it there when I visit.
This self-help book is a MUST-HAVE for anyone who wants to greatly improve their physical AND emotional or mental health!!! It is excellent for newcomers to homeopathy as well as seasoned users. There is NO better homeopathic guide for daily study and use. I have used it for my entire large family for over 10 years and have seen great cures and miracles. It's easy to understand and very eloquently written. Don't forget this book for any health ailment such as colds, flu, stomach ulcers, impotence, depression, anxiety, headaches both acute or chronic, emphysema, hay fever, low self-esteem, menopause, etc, etc.!!!! Thank-you, Dr. Hershoff !!!!
I'm new to homeopathy; I only plan to use it to help keep my family healthy, and I find this book very user-friendly. Sometimes it is hard to pick out the perfect remedy, but this book definitely helps narrow it down. It is so rewarding to see results with homeopathy!
We've been using this for about 2 years. I liked it so much that I got it on kindle so I'd have it on the go which is where I need it half the time. It's super easy to use and really hasn't steered us wrong yet. Even my 11 year old can read through a page and figure out what he thinks he needs.

Amazon.com Review
Charming Billy is a devastating account of the power of longing and lies, love's tenacity, and resignation's hold. Even at his funeral party, Billy Lynch's life remains up for debate. This soft-spoken, poetry lover's drinking was as legendary among his Queens, New York, family and friends as was his disappointment in love. But the latter, as his cousin Dennis knows, "was, after all, yet another sweet romance to preserve." After World War II, both young men had spent one sun-swept week on Long Island, renovating a house and falling in with two Irish sisters--nannies to a wealthy family--"marveling, marveling still, that this Eden was here, at the other end of the same island on which they had spent their lives." By the end of their idyll, Billy and Eva were engaged, though she was set to return to County Wicklow. Determined to earn enough money to bring her, her family, and if necessary her entire village back to the U.S., Billy took two jobs, one of which would indenture him for years. But despite the money he sent, Eva never returned, and then was suddenly dead of pneumonia. The true tragedy is that she had simply kept her fare and married someone else--a secret Dennis keeps for the next 30 years as he watches Billy fall into a loveless marriage and the self-administered anesthesia of alcohol. Alice McDermott's quiet, striking novel is a study of the lies that bind and the weight of familial wishes. She seems far less interested in the shock of revelation than in her characters' power to live through personal disaster. As Dennis's daughter pieces together Billy's real history, she also learns of the accommodations her own family had long made--and discovers that good intentions can be as destructive as the truth they mean to hide.

From Library Journal
When Billy, the glue of a tight Irish community in New York, dies as a result of lifelong alcohol abuse, mourners gather around roast beef and green bean amandine to tell tales and ruminate on his struggle for happiness after he lost his first love, Eva. With carefully drawn character studies and gentle probing, McDermott, who won the National Book Award for this work, masterfully weaves a subtle but tenacious web of relationships to explore the devastation of alcoholism, the loss of innocence, the daily practice of love, and the redeeming unity of family and friendship. Charming Bill has some of the most beautiful writing I've read in a long time. I marked numerous passages, especially one crystalline paragraph that summed up all the joys and sorrows of life so beautifully it practically made me weep. It is an Irish Catholic elegy for a post-war generation and individual lives and marriages that crashed on the shoals of alcoholism, unrequited love, and the limits of the American Dream. Not five stars because it got quite repetitive by the end and I saw every major plot development coming from a mile or five away. You have to love literary fiction to love this book and the be willing to let the flow of the language carry you along through lives that are made up more of daily joys and sorrows than great events.
Alice McDermott's novels take a deep long look at a character sharing his/her love, hopes, desires, failures. We view "the typical course [of love] from early infatuation to serious love to affection, occasionally diminshed by impatience and disagreement, bolstered by interdependence, fanned now and then by fondness, by humor."[p 45]Here she takes on "Billy [who] had drunk himself to death. He had at some point, ripped apart, plowed through, as alcoholics tend to do, the great, deep, tightly woven fabric of affection that was some part of the emotional life, the life of love, of everyone in the room."[p 4] The "everyone in the room" here is a tavern where a lunch is served after Billy's funeral.Billy's life is told by the daughter of Dennis one of Billy's cousins - the one most responsible for helping him through his life and for helping Billy's wife, Maeve, through life. "Billy was for me then merely one of my father's legion of cousins, distinguished not so much by his alcoholism (it had seemed to me that there were more alcoholics among them than there were Republicans, or even redheads)" [p 42]. Billy was indeed charming - everyone loved him and made allowances for him.[SPOILER ALERT]The pivotal moment in Billy's life - at least as viewed by his extended family - took place shortly after World War II. Dennis and Billy are out on Long Island working on a cottage owned by Dennis' mother's second husband. While at the beach one day they meet a couple of Irish girls. Billy falls in love with one, but she returns to Ireland. Billy sends her money hoping to bring her back. But she stays in Ireland and marries a man there. Dennis finds out. Trying to spare Billy's feelings, and trying to save Billy from years of gossip and talk, Dennis tells Billy the girl died. Billy eventually marries another woman, the plain Maeve, but he may still carry a flame for the Irish girl. What course did this lie set Billy on? Would he have been an alcoholic anyway? How would his life have been different? As Dennis and another cousin, Dan Lynch, discuss the matter Dennis tries to close off that avenue of thought. "It might have been his natural disinclination to wholeheartedly agree with Dan Lynch about anything. It might have been his reluctance to consider the possibility that the lie he'd told Billy all those years ago was not merely the cause of thirty years of pointless grief but the very thing that had made Billy's life with Maeve possible, and fruitless."[p 193][END SPOILER ALERT]I especially like McDermott's point of view telling this story. She starts with a few conversations between family members at the gatherings just after the death but in a blink switches back in time to the events being discussed. It's also interesting to hear the story told of a man who had just died - we can't see his point of view because he is gone. We see the life through the eyes of others.I thoroughly enjoy Alice McDermott's studies on life and love. While this book is excellent, if you want to start with her try Someone.
Almost as many 1 star reviews as 5 stars? For this book? I've looked up other National Book Award winners (as this book is) and saw that this is a recurring trend with Amazon book reviews: win an award and watch the negative reviews pile up. As for the book itself, I found it to be a moving story of family ties and the devastation of alcoholism. Alice McDermott is a very good writer and the book is full of quiet, lyrical passages like this one: "the dead were there with them, just outside the circle of light. Billy and Claire, not forgotten, no less mourned, but silent, for now, in dreams their faces always turned away, so that the course of other lives, the lives of those they loved, could be completed, could go on. Surely just as the Irish girl, whom Billy had loved when he was young, just back from the war, had eventually turned her face away." I would recommend this book to anyone to read. While it is a quiet character study full of talk and reminiscense, if anyone says that nothing happens in the book, all I can say is it does if you understand it.
That Night by Alice McDermott stayed with me for years after I read it, and I think I will think about Charming Billy for a while, too. The story's narrator is a tangential witness to the main events of the book, which provides some critical distance and a sense of how family folklore is understood and retold by subsequent generations. There isn't a lot of plot to the book, and some covering of well-worn ground (the family folklore) from different angles, but it comes together in a brilliantly imagined world that is bound by the past while trying to move forward.
I could not believe I had read the same book as the reviews posted within the book. They were Glowing and I had a hard time finishing the book. I persevered because I was reading it for book club. I did not really like the characters and had a hard time knowing who was speaking when the book hopped back and forth in time.
Alice McDermott is an excellent writer. She definitely writes about what she knows, i.e. there is not a line of dialogue that does not ring absolutely true. I grew up in the exact area of eastern Long Island that she describes with such accuracy and fondness, so that in itself gave me great pleasure. However, what makes this novel wonderful is its understated way of provoking the reader to think about profound topics and beliefs. The narrative deliberately comforts and disturbs at the same time.
While reading this book, I found my parents, aunts and uncles alive again in its pages, still struggling with the same problems, loves, hurts dreams and faith. I found it to be a riveting experience. I wanted to put it down, but found myself drawn in by it in much the way the past generations of my family must have felt drawn into the dramas they lived. The characters are true to life and the force their struggles and dreams exerted on them generation after generation seems only too believable. I found this painful to read but I hope to draw value from the experiences of this group of characters.
If you are Irish or of Irish decent, a must read. The author also is very descriptive and uses "pretty" language. Love it! The story is great for people who are not Irish also.
