The 2016 United States presidential race will likely go down in history as a black eye for the country. Never has the country seemed more divided. More people, it seems, are voting AGAINST their least preferred candidate as opposed to voting FOR a particular person. These sentiments, of course, bring out the worst in some people, and we’ve all heard those with temperaments of a 16-year-old spoiled brat spat things such as “If (candidate I hate) becomes President, then I’M moving to Canada!†Well, if you happen to be one of those pessimistic grouches that want to trade the stars and stripes for the red and white maple leaf, author Andre Dubroc has just the book for you.This book is meant to be a joke (i.e. you’ll find it in the ‘Humor’ section of your local bookstore). It is, at times, hilarious. I found myself literally laughing out loud many times. Beneath all of this humor, however, is actually a very practical guide. The first couple of chapters of this book, for example, really educates the uninformed novice exactly how to move to Canada. It’s not exactly an easy thing to do. It ain’t like moving across town (if you’ve ever actually moved across town, you know that THAT is not actually easy either. Remember all of the forms you had to sign in the realtor’s office?), and for every real step that one must take to accomplish their relocation, Dubroc manages to add wit and humor within his actual instructions.After Dubroc teaches us all of the steps that are actually involved in relocating to another country (and there are quite a few), he then teaches us about Canadian food, nomenclature, habits, and overall attitudes. We learn that, just like in the United States, people in Canada are diverse, and stereotypes are applied to those indigenous to their particular province. Again, this is a humor book, and these descriptions are probably somewhat true, if probably not a bit broad. We’re guilty of this in the U.S. as well. We’re likely to characterize a truck driver from Mississippi much differently than a professor that lives in Vermont. I should also point out that the author seems to have something against Quebec. Hopefully, most Quebeccians (???) have a sense of humor. With a French name like “Andre Dubroc†you might think that the author is actually from Canada, or has some roots there, but he’s actually from Louisiana.Although this book is peppered with a few swear words, it’s a far cry from the vitriolic diatribes of such hate filled mongers such as a George Carlin or a Bill Maher. This book is also mainly apolitical. Yes, the author takes some shots at the political extreme, but he seems to hit both sides with equal aim. He seems to realize that humor is at its best when it’s not so hate-filled.This book is designed to be, and is, a quick read. Like a lot of humor books, it contains some page filler such as coloring pages to color your favorite Canadians and “word searches†where you can complete a puzzle at the end of the chapter reviewing the new words that you’ve just learned. I found the author to be quite gifted, however, and being that this is his first book, I would love to see more by him. I’m willing to bet that if he had a nice chunk of time to work with, he could actually produce a much more detailed body of work. Since, as mentioned, this book actually contains real tips, I wouldn’t limit this author’s potential to only humor. This guy has some real talent with the written word.If you happen to come across this book and the 2016 election Presidential contest has already come and gone, don’t fret and think that this book is no longer relevant. I’m sure in the days to come, we’ll have plenty of other elections and episodes of grumpiness that will cause many to shout that they will soon change their place of residence. So a book like this will always come in handy.
The Author sounds like He is an expatriate American. He understands the types of Americans that are seeking relocation to Canada and sums most of us up rather hilariously. He also, at the same time, includes very necessary information, right down to the form numbers, needed to start and finish the immigration process. How to get a job, lists of what bring, local colloquialisms, and the difference in taxes are all explained. Best of all is the explanation for Canadian society. The key is co. Co-operation with each other, not be individualistic, the word is not me in Canada, but we.

It answers questions you didn't know you needed to ask in a way that doesn't make you feel too stupid and gives you fun activities when you start to become overwhelmed by the tasks ahead. A thoroughly entertaining and illuminating read.
So many rated the book as hilariously funny. It did make me smile a couple times but it's certainly far from hilarious. It had some good tips for those that might be seriously considering moving to Canada but there was also some comments that if they thought he was serious would get a bad view of our country. He mentions some terms that you should never say in Canada. I've lived here all my life and hadn't heard of most of them.
Hilarious. There is some good information here, but I read it with absolutely no intention of moving to Canada (quite happy here in Australia thanks very much) and enjoyed it. Andre (Quebecois perhaps?) has a gift with words, and it was a pleasure to read the jibes and jokes. Easy to read in one sitting, I recommend it if you're looking to learn more about Canada or if you just want a light, run read.
It was billed as humorous, yet was totally lacking in humor. It seemed to be more of veiled diatribe in an attempt to keep folks from the States in the States.

Emigration (leaving your country of citizenship), at least from Western democracies, is far easier than immigration (moving legally into a new country). The key concept here is "legal". Other countries have a much more literal view of their immigration law than many US-born Americans imagine.
As a pouty American, I have often thought of leaving the states and living a peaceful existence dangling fish lines through a hole in the ice while boiling down 40 gallons of maple sap into 1 gallon of syrup. We are close enough to the border to visit often but are too lazy to begin the multi-year process of leaving our ice bound home. Thoroughly enjoyed the humor. The American military dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, to end World War II, within days of each other, in August 1945. This history is factually incorrect.It is quite true that nuclear weapons have been used only twice in war, but they have been detonated many times in testing, and the results have been devastating.Keith M. Parsons, a professor of philosophy, and Robert A. Zaballa, a nuclear physicist, have written a concise account of the remarkable yet tragic history of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific. In “Bombing the Marshall Islands: Cold War Tragedy,†Parsons and Zaballa recount the fascinating events chronicling nuclear testing and the impact on those physically affected by the blasts.The authors’ descriptions of the blasts themselves are truly frightening. One of a series of tests was named Castle Bravo, which they describe as “a stupendous blast of 15 megatons – the equivalent of the simultaneous detonation of fifteen million tons of conventional high explosive. The fireball reached four miles in diameter and excavated a crater 250 feet deep and 6,500 feet across. The mushroom cloud rose to a height of over sixty miles in less than ten minutes. The power of the blast greatly exceeded expectations.â€According to the authors, “During that time, the United States conducted sixty-seven nuclear tests on and in the vicinity of Bikini. The combined explosive yield of these events was 108 megatons – the equivalent of one Hiroshima-sized bomb detonated daily for nineteen years. As a result, some of these islands were grossly polluted with radioactive fallout and rendered uninhabitable… The beauty of basic physics is part of the story, but so are terror, suffering, and death.â€One of the reasons this book is so valuable is in its inherent fairness. The authors do not take political sides on the issue. In fact, they take care to sympathize and state the arguments for both points of view. While the testing clearly had awful effects, Parsons and Zaballa clearly explain why the United States felt the urgent need to test during the Cold War period in order to assure the survival of the United States. They write, “One view was that these weapons were purely evil and their eradication was the only hope for humanity. The opposed view was that eradication was impossible, at least at that time, and that deterrence was the best way to avoid a nuclear catastrophe.â€Describing their book as a “scholarly popular history†written for all, the authors write, “The lesson we draw is straightforward: When nuclear war is not only conceived as possible but is planned as a basic element of policy, the risks run during the period of nuclear testing are completely unsurprising.â€One physicist recorded his observation of one test. “Suddenly there was an enormous flash of light, the brightest light I have ever seen or that I think anyone has ever seen. It blasted; it pounced; it bored its way right through you. It was a vision that was seen with more than the eye. It was seen to last forever.â€The authors continue, “The initial flash may seem to last forever, but in a few seconds the explosion dims to the point where it is bearable by the human eye. The light resolves into a massive fireball, like a second sun, still intensely brilliant. Then it quickly transforms into a great column of fire, thrusting upwards at terrific speed and displaying a spectrum of terrific colors. The iconic mushroom cloud forms and rapidly rises, finally topping off miles into the atmosphere, far higher than any mountain. The devastating shockwave propagates rapidly outward from the hypocenter.â€They quote a report as stating, “It is clear that the use of this weapon would bring about the destruction of innumerable human lives; it is not a weapon that can be used exclusively for the destruction of material installations of military or semi-military purposes. About the Author
Patrick McAloon is a Senior Lecturer of Chinese at the Ohio State University and co-founder of SinoConnect, a firm that connects Chinese people of all ages with educational opportunities in the US. McAloon has been traveling to China since 1997 when he studied at Beijing Normal University through the College of William & Mary. Following an internship in Yantai arranged by the Ohio State University and two years as a department manager in an e-commerce company in Beijing and Shenzhen, McAloon returned to the US to complete graduate degrees in Chinese language pedagogy at Ohio State. He has led many American students to China and continually receives Chinese visitors to the US, fueling his interest in cross-border exchange.

As someone who has lived in China and has counseled families moving to China, I found this book an excellent resource for an American (or anyone from a western country) thinking about going to China to study, or moving to China for any reason. Not only is it very thorough, covering everything you need to prepare for the move, the move itself, and settling in, but it gives a fabulous insight into how to get to become comfortable with Chinese culture and Chinese individuals. I especially like the way the author writes. He has a personal and relaxed style which makes the reader feel comfortable, while pre-warned about the culture challenges he is about to experience. If I knew someone considering a move to China, I would definitely recommend they read this book. If they are still uncomfortable, it probably isn't a good decision for them.
Patrick McAloon succeeded in authoring an excellent book on China as an aid to student study. This publication is one of the most comprehensive I have reviewed over the course of researching a book that I am writing on the same subject with a slightly different focus. Patrick's work provides a wealth of information on the country to include an excellent background on the country, its unique culture and many other fascinating details pertaining to the country. I have traveled extensively in the East to include China and on reflection, I wish I had discovered Patrick's book earlier. It is a must have for students headed in this direction. I highly recommend this book to students traveling to China with the intent of ensuring they get the most out of their journey. This book certainly takes the ignorance out of traveling to China, even for non-student travelers. Is any conveivable subject not addressed? And in a practical, readable, humorous way? The author gives examples from his own experiences and those of student groups he has led. The book is anything but boring, and is even quite quotable. One istaken through every process step-by-step, with Chinese characters inserted where they might be useful to show someone when you need help. Also included are pitfalls for foreigners, preconceptions of Americans on the part of Chinese (none of them good), the importance of relationships with Chinese, banquet etiquette, and on and on. Take a look at the Table of Contents on the Amazon entry, and you'll see what I mean. Enjoy!

Newbies to China and future study abroad students will quickly learn the acronym TIC in this book, which stands for This Is China. Studying in China has TIC down to a T. As a previous Chinese language student, I always thought travel guide culture and history sections were crammed with too much info and hard to digest. Studying in China simplifies it, puts it in smaller chunks and adds true experience and expertise to getting the most out of your study adventure in the Middle Kingdom.Living and studying in a foreign country is very rewarding but can require a lot of mental energy and adaptation. Dr. Pat McAloon provides very specific details of China life and sprinkles humor throughout that helps make light of the cultural understanding process. Some that stuck out to me were propane tanks in taxicab trunks (might be a problem for your big bag), the blind person path on a Chinese sidewalk and what’s all that information on a Beijing to Shanghai train ticket.I also really liked the explanation of the Chinese relationship words guanxi and renqing. Many articles and media try to pin down what it is for the sake of better understanding Chinese relationship behavior. Dr. McAloon’s take gives very basic and fundamental action steps to develop, build and maintain Chinese relationships in the short-term and long-term. For both students and business people alike, one can gain much insight into what China is today.
This is one of the most comprehensive books available for students who will be studying abroad in China. As a study abroad advisor, I am comforted by the fact that my students who will read this book will be completely prepared for their time abroad. The most impressive thing is that Patrick McAloon is able to make 304 pages (which these days is hard to get students to read) is laid out in a very easily comprehendible way and is a very quick read despite its density. Students studying abroad don’t often think of the intricacies that come with things such as buying a plane ticket from home to a smaller city in the host country. However, Mr. McAloon breaks that down and talks about the pros and cons of purchasing one type of ticket versus another, things the students would have never thought of on their own. This book also tells you how to travel, what to bring with you, how to handle customs, and is accompanied by pictures to help the reader understand and be comforted in the process. Any concern a student studying in China or even someone simply traveling to China has is covered in this book. I strongly recommend it to everyone planning on spending time in China.

Not what I expected. I was looking for more depth. If I had seen this in the bookstore, I would not have purchased. Did not meet my needs but not worth returning.
This book is so basic that it is worthless. For example, there is only one example on the "if" function and it covers only the if and if ... else formats.There is no index, only a table of contents. I should have checked the number of pages...86 pages cannot begin to cover even the basics of Excel.
