This book is full of gospel truth. She can get a bit repetitive, though. I appreciate that it is saturated with scripture. I can see where this book would really speak to some women where they are at and how they are struggling to get their arms around a broader, eternal view of motherhood. She has some practical applications but not many. I liked Glimpses of Grace much better.
As I ate up the reasonably sized chapters in this book by Gloria Furman, I was happy to find a balanced view of salvation and its affects on our thoughts, motives, and behavior as Christian women. Glimpses of Grace offers theologically sound but practically helpful counsel for cherishing Jesus, Who He is, and His beautiful gospel in the midst of the mundane moments that a woman’s life is made up of.The balance of this book is clear throughout, including in the following quote from Chapter 3:"I believe it is helpful and necessary to retreat to quiet places to pray and read God’s Word. But silence is not necessary for you to have a vibrant relationship with God. your spiritual life is not restricted to early mornings before the noisemakers in your life wake up. If you feel that God meets with you only when the house is empty or quiet, you’ll view every noise and every noisemaker as an annoying distraction to your communion with God."Here we see the well-rounded philosophy that it is helpful and even necessary to retreat to quiet places for quality time with God. Yet if we legalistically believe that we can only commune with Him in that setting, we are opening ourselves up for a lot of unnecessary frustration and wrong reactions to the interruptions He has ordained.One of my favorite things about this read was Mrs. Furman’s emphasis on the Person of Jesus Christ as our object of contentment. I’ve realized in recent months how easy it is to think I’m content because I’m choosing to enjoy my housework, my job, and the other mundane pieces of life. That’s great, but I really need to take it a step further. Mrs. Furman explains,"Surely these things–a cheerful attitude and sense of hopefulness–are wonderful by-products of rejoicing in God while in the midst of our homes. But that’s just what they are–by-products. The source of our faith, hope, love, joy, and gospel-grounded optimism is God Himself and not our stuff or our circumstances."I also love the connection drawn between dwelling on Jesus and becoming like Him."We study Christ because we’ve been saved for the purpose of being transformed into His image, and in our beholding, the work of transformation occurs."In terms of practicality, Chapter 7 “All Grace and All Sufficieny for Every Dinner Guest†was my favorite. Serving through hospitality must, like everything in our lives, must be done out of a deep-rooted love for Jesus. I’m sure every woman can relate to the fear of man that is shown in letting earning the satisfaction and admiration of our dinner guests become an idol as we prepare to open our homes."When we serve with the strength God supplies instead of from our own energies or motivation, we can serve with cheerfulness to the praise of His glory. We don’t have to be embittered martyrs on the altar of hospitality."Quite possibly my favorite quote from the book is also in Chapter 7:"When grief over our sin and thankfulness for the gift of grace meet together at the cross, a powerful work of transformation occurs in our hearts."I hope these few quotes whet your appetite enough to compel you to pick up Glimpses of Grace. As a young wife looking ahead to, Lord-willing, many years of serving primarily from my home, the truth and encouragement Mrs. Furman had to share rang true in my heart when held up against Scripture. Her sense of humor and realism kept the book light and enjoyable, and her illustrations and real-life examples skillfully brought heady theology down to a practical level, while not trivializing the magnitude of the Cross. I believe this is a book I will return to in years to come as I fight carnal thinking in the mundane moments of life, and I highly recommend it to any woman seeking to love Jesus through her day-in, day-out routine.
I usually don't take the time to review books but I must speak up on this one. I bought it for a baby shower gift and was offered the Kindle version for a good price after my purchase so I bought it. (I am grandmother to 12 so I probably would not have read it otherwise.) I COULD NOT STOP READING! I highlighted, wrote passages in a journal, texted to friends and I'm about to read it again. Thank you, Gloria Furman, for your passionate words sharing the life-changing Word of God, your humble heart and endearing true-life stories. SO.MUCH.TRUTH. If you love God and His truths please read this book and give it away. Young moms will be so encouraged--and they need it badly! Actually ALL moms will take away deep encouragement and worship!
This book is packed with solid theology and practical application of that theology. It would be helpful for anyone to read but is obviously geared toward mothers. I appreciate that she never idolizes motherhood or romanticizes it. The chapters are short enough to read in about 10 minutes and they're well worth your time. Just buy the book.
Well-written, absolutely brimming with Scriptures throughout the text incorporating the truth of our real identities with present day struggles. I am very encouraged by the author's openness with her own journey of being sanctified, as well as encouraged by the simple and fundamental truth that all of our parenting boils down to the Gospel. Who we are in Jesus, how we are growing to be more like Him in ministering His likeness to our kids, is so much more important than any parenting style/philosophy. The author does not beat this fact into the reader, but it is I believe a central truth that has most impacted me in reading this book.
This book was a fantastic and easy read! Gloria Furman's writing is witty and conversational but by no means "fluffy." Through much of the read I felt like I was sitting opposite Gloria at a café table enjoying fun and edifying conversation over pumpkin spice lattes. There is a good balance of personal stories and life lessons mixed with sound theology. But the best and most encouraging thing about Glimpses of Grace is its center on the Gospel. Every page points to our great Redeemer and how the finished work of Christ transforms our lives.While this book is written from the perspective of motherhood and homemaking, the premise is highly applicable for anyone in all walks of life. Furman fleshes out how the Gospel impacts every mundane part of our lives. And you don't have to be in the thick of motherhood to know what mundane looks and feels like--we all live there don't we? As a single adult with no kiddos, I feel like I've gleaned much from this quick read both in my spiritual walk and my ability to understand and encourage the mothers in my circle of friends. Most importantly however, this book has helped me grow closer to my Savior and deepen my understanding of the Gospel.

I like this style of book (self-help as narrated through someone's first-hand experiences) and thought the information in it was really good. That being said, I'm knocking off 2 stars because Jancee Dunn consistently references "research" but does not consistently cite her sources. If she quotes someone from an interview, she's good about giving their name, but there are lots and lots of references to studies and research and there's absolutely no way of knowing which study she's referring to. A lot of what she quotes sounds very interesting and I'd love to read the full study but I can't. In my opinion, it's unacceptable for someone to make money off of the hard work of hundreds of researchers and academics throughout the world and not give credit where credit is due.Overall, I thought this book contains very useful information and am glad I read it, but wish Dunn had credited the people she relied upon to build her case.
This book is full of little gems of advice and insight. From division of labor in the home, raising the kids, organization, money, to sex. I found many of the author's stories relatable and humorous. I think the book, at best, gave me useful strategies I can implement in my own life, and at least, gave me validation that I'm not alone in these struggles. That other good men, good husbands out there still bring these frustrations to their marriages.I think the women who read this book and are left feeling even angrier probably have other underlying problems. Yes, the book does put the bulk of the work needed to make changes on the woman herself, which feels defeating and infuriating. But unless divorce is something you'd seriously consider, what alternative is there? It's hard to carry the burden of having to be the one to "fix" things, be the bigger person in general, and love your husband enough to take that on in spite of all your frustrations. The ones that led to the need for someone to even write this book. But I think she modeled that wonderfully and guess what... it worked for her. Her marriage, her home life, and her job as a parent are all better off. That's worth it.The book helped me understand myself, my husband, and certain dynamics of our marriage and home life. I'd recommend it to any couple about to have a baby or already struggling. Kids change your relationship in so many unpredictable ways. This book helped put it all into perspective and helped me feel more positive overall.
I have rarely laughed out loud while reading a book. And as an avid fiction reader, I didn't know that I could get on board with something more practical. But this book? It's amazing.Helped ground me and realize a) omg I'm not the only one and b) there are genius mechanisms to deal with the stress of having a partner and a baby and thank god now I have them all neatly packaged in a witty book.I've read - and reread - this book now 3 times. Highlighted parts. Flagged others.Sometimes I just turn to it for a chuckle. Sometimes I literally reference it for "how to deal with bringing up...".It's awesome.Can't say enough good things.
This book makes me feel less alone as a mother/wife. I LOVE this book. The title may sound like a negative perspective on husbands, but the actual content of the book is not bashing husbands. It fairly looks at how everyone is responsible for a happy home (still it does address some complaints I and other moms have). It has a feminist/enlightened perspective, but is not heavy handed about it. It has helpful information and good advice/strategies to try and make your post-baby home more harmonious. At the same time, the writer is very humorous and it is very readable! It is, I would say the book is mostly about heterosexual couples, as an FYI.
If this book had a different title, I wouldn’t have to hide it from my partner. Of course, it’s catchy, and many parents can relate. It is heteronormative, as she admits. The actual stories and expert advice in the book are extremely useful, accessible and readable. I highly recommend this book. I don’t hate my husband, but the stress of coparenting is real and it does change the relationship. Why not have help? At the very least it helps me feel like I’m not alone. Other parents have to work hard on their relationships too.
This book was a timely treasure during the early days of welcoming kid #2 this year. It was a poignant reminder that many of the things I feel toward my husband are A) felt by almost all women married to men B) feelings that I don't have to let take over our interactions. I have been a fountain of "how to improve your marriage" tidbits since reading this. And we no longer feel guilty about our 2 1/2 year old feeding the dog. Here's to many more books looking at such practical topics with such gracious humor and honesty. I only wish I had written it!
This book actually really helped me, and my relationship. Not something I can say for pretty much any other book I've ever read. Jancee Dunn did a ton of research (including going to some of the top couples' therapists in the country with her husband) and shares it all. I think that ever single fight my partner and I have had since our child was born was pretty much covered verbatim in this book. So I suddenly felt very much not alone anymore, and also had a roadmap for how to approach our difficulties more gently and effectively. On top of it all, Dunn is a really good, and really funny writer. I looked forward to reading this every day while nursing my child. Definitely a book to own, and refer back to. And pass along to friends. BTW, I shared some of it with my husband, too, who also found it funny, and I think probably helpful. Hopefully the title is not too off-putting in that regard-- it's really useful for happy couples struggling to adjust to the immense change of having a child.

Avoid this terrible book. It is garbage. I'm disappointed I never got around to returning it in time. SO MANY TYPOS AND MISTAKES! Really not helpful at all. The material it covers is all in paragraph form and not very easy to study from, it might as well be a poorly written text book. Don't waste the money on this.
Don't buy this book. Outdated. Gives you tips that are illegal in test centers.

Very in-depth study guide with information that is incredibly useful. It encompasses everything from environmental distractions and how to avoid them to the real content needed to learn for the big day. The questions are challenging and geared to shift your mind towards thinking the way you need to for the exam and I am also hoping for well after that.
This is an excellent resource to get a quick overview of each subject. I appreciate the fact that the author didn't use a lot of rhetoric. I'm using it along with the TEAS6 for more precise info on Science and English.

I am kind of at a 3rd year level of Russian. Have not really read all the stories, but I like editions like these since we are already familiar with many of the stories and might even own an English/French edition. Yes, I need to use a dictionary, but that is alright. Of course, I like best the ones that include English text right after one or two paragraphs but even at an advanced age I like fairy tales over very business like texts for reading.
This is a beautifully illustrated large print book containing descriptive pictures.This book is written in Russian script and offers the reader some of Russia's favorite fairy tales. This book would be a wonderful beginners addition to those who are learning Russian and need practice in decoding and reading Russian as a second language.

Harriet lives on the Upper East Side, the only child of an affluent couple; they have a cook, they send Harriet to a private school, and they employ a nanny of sorts in the form of Miss Golly, an acerbic woman of sharp intelligence who is given to unexpected quotes.Harriet is a self-regimented child who likes the stability of repetition. Her room must be precisely so. She always takes tomato sandwiches to school for lunch. She always has cake and milk when she returns from school in the afternoon. She then goes out to spy on a number of people—a rich woman, an Italian family, a cat-crazy man, and a married couple who consider themselves perfect. Harriet writes about them in her notebook … but she also writes about her classmates and her best friends, and the brutal honesty of her thoughts causes five shades of hell when her notebook falls into their hands.When the world changes around her in unexpected ways, Harriet finds herself unable to cope. In order to bring herself back into focus, she must learn to take responsibility for her actions, to show a little tact, and to be emotionally as well as factually honest. The resulting story is remarkable. Times have changed quite a bit, and eleven year olds seem to be knowledgeable beyond their years, but Harriet is still a winner. More to the point, the book itself is about personal growth, and Harriet’s foibles (which range from trespassing to a mild profanity to classroom mayhem) are in the nature of lessons to be learned.Author Louise Fitzhugh was lesbian, and more recently HARRIET THE SPY has been accused of having a homosexual agenda. Harriet is a girl who often dresses like a boy and who behaves in ways that seem boyish; she must, therefore be lesbian. Her friend Sport is a boy who seems somewhat weak; he must, therefore, be gay. And then there is this business about the boy who always purple socks. Everyone knows that purple is a color associated with gays and lesbians. Well … if you are determined to read a “homosexual agenda†into absolutely everything, I suppose you can scratch one out of this. But I’ll think you’re crazy and so will most other people.Now and then I like to go back to some of the books I read when I was a child. There are the Brains Benton mystery series, and the Oz books, and the whole Hardy Boys/Tom Swift/Nancy Drew thing. And they are all fun and enjoyable in their ways. But to say it flatly, HARRIET THE SPY isn’t just a children’s book suitable for nostalgia; it is one of the best books I’ve read of any type. Simple as that. The 50th Anniversary Edition, available in both print and Kindle, comes complete with the original illustrations by Fitzhugh and a dozen or so essays by authors who comment on the impact the book had on them. You can read a book several times as a kid and come back to it as an adult and have it become something completely different. I suspect this is the case for most people with "Harriet the Spy".For me, as a kid, Harriet was so awesome. She was cool, she was a ne'or do well, she didn't give a flip about the adults, and if she did, she did it because of her own timing. She had a hard time with her friends, of course, but she blazed right past that and it was amazing! What more could you get out of a kids book? I carried a spy book with me for the longest time, and I would make mental observations about the world and people around me.As an adult reading this book, I found myself crying a couple times, because there's this seething background full of classism, ageism, sexism, and and all the in-betweens if you're looking at it with an open eye. The problem with judging this book as a kid and judging it as an adult is that a kid instinctively understands that the things Harriet does (pinching, punching, all that) is in reaction to bullying, not an instigator of it. A child will realize, without even realizing it, that Harriet is reacting to the world rather than creating it (ironic considering her desire to be a writer). A child will feel that injustice and cheer for Harriet, when, by the end, she realizes that there are people other than her out there and she needs to think about them. She doesn't change her fundamentals, but she does realize that words can hurt people, and that her friends can accept her for who she is, rather than who she should be.Adults who read this now, and say that this is a bad influence on kids, miss a key point. They're well-meant in wanting to discourage children from reading it because they think it'll discourage bullying. But it's not. Harriet the Spy cannot be read as an adult and judged by an adult because the kids reading it are thinking from a completely different angle. Harriet is eleven years old and it's impossible to give an adult's mindset and motives because she simply doesn't have them yet. And it's good. She's learning what it means to do something and the consequences of the action. Is she learning kindness or is she learning caution? It's too early to tell. But as any child can tell, Harriet is changing and it's a wonderful thing because what's worse than having things go terribly wrong in your young life and knowing nothing will ever change?
I've never seen my daughter react like this to a book, but she was crazy about Harriet the Spy. She would listen for as long as I was willing to read, and we're now on to the sequels. I like it because it's real literature and doesn't talk down to kids at all. There's challenging vocabulary, and some fairly intense emotional scenes. I enjoyed reading it as much as my daughter, and we're now taking off on a journey through the classics. What a great beginning!
I didn't realize what an impact this book had on my life. I think this book is responsible for my love of writing as I started keeping a journal when I was 11. When I re-read it, I found it to be so much more then a girl who spied on people and kept notes. It is about the struggles of a writer, who has to overcome rejection, abandonment, and self doubt. I thought Harriet was a well formed character, and her world is very interesting. If you are a writer, read it. If you have a child, I would strongly recommend it.
Favorite book as a young girl. Ordered a copy for my daughter age 8. She loved it as well. Some of the terms are outdated, so worked best as a read allowed so that I could explain some old fashioned words and ideas.
