I rarely agree with the crowd, but, this once, I am on board with all the other reviewers:If I were looking for a story that was written to appease all the key points of interest to me, it would be difficult to find a literary work more on point than the latest novel by Michael Connelly. To be sure, it isn’t perfect, but it is as near the ideal police procedural as I could ever hope to read.BLUSH FACTOR: This is not a story to share with children or your church prayer group. Street talk includes profanities (eff-words) and the affection of the two main heroes, although not overly graphic, will cause blushing if you read it to others. In fact, the description is tastefully done. This definitely is a crime story for mature audiences. Mature, but not obscene in any way, shape or form. PG-17, not R would be my thinking for a rating.THE WRITING & EDITING: If you’re not turning away due to the blush factor, I believe you’re going to appreciate the quality of writing and editing – there is a reason the selling price is set as it is. Michael Connelly’s Dark Sacred Night picks up where his two previous novels, The Late Show and Two Kinds of Truth, left off. Renée Ballard continues to work the late shift for Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division. Harry Bosch continues to work cold cases for the San Fernando Police Department.They meet by happenstance when Ballard finds Bosch snooping through Hollywood’s case files in search of information about the murder of Daisy Clayton, whose mother, Elizabeth, Bosch rescued at the end of Two Kinds of Truth. They strike a bargain and investigate the case together. Along the way, Ballard and Bosch investigate other cases on the side, but it’s the Daisy Clayton murder that drives the plot forward.As per usual with Connelly’s novels, this one is a page-turner. I started reading it after dinner and finished it before I went to bed. It held my interest throughout. Even the side plots kept my interest. What I love about Connelly’s novels is the way he moves the plot forward by means of good detective work, rather than an investigator’s flashes of insight. You see Ballard and Bosch working the evidence, piecing the story together bit by bit. This approach keeps you hooked, because you want to follow the evidence wherever it leads.Additionally, I love the fact that unlike other serial novelists that I love to read—I’m looking at you, Lee Child and Craig Johnson—Michael Connelly is smart enough to realize that Bosch is getting older and simply can’t sustain the pace, the intensity, or the beatings he endured (or gave out) in previous novels. With this novel, Connelly seems to be moving his focus toward Ballard and transitioning Bosch into a lesser role. That’s great, as far as I’m concerned, both because Ballard is an intriguing character and because I still enjoy Bosch.I’m not giving Dark Sacred Night a five-star review, however. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend reading it, but it’s not at the top of Connelly heap. I have two reasons for this: First, the side cases. One of the side cases is designed solely to introduce a character. Ballard’s side cases (an accidental death, an art theft, and a gruesome murder) are solved too perfunctorily. Bosch’s main side case is more interesting, but it’s difficult to tell whether how it ends is designed to set up a transition in Bosch’s life or to introduce a problem for a future novel. Second, a moment of intimacy between Bosch and another character seems way out of character for him. You’ll know what I mean when you read the novel.Despite this, I’m happy with Dark Sacred Night, and I look forward to whatever Connelly cooks up next year. My guess is that Renée Ballard will play the leading role and Harry Bosch a supporting one. And that’s okay with me. They’re both great characters.

Over the years, I have derived a great deal of enjoyment from Michael Connolly’s novels, and I always look forward to the arrival of a new one. I have read most of them more than once. When you reread a book, knowing the plot before you start, it is generally because you appreciate the writer’s style as much as his stories.It is sad to have to report that this latest book is a disappointment. It reads very much like one of those continuation books, written by ghost writers, that come out after an author has died. The writing is flat and tedious, the story not particularly gripping, and the characters shallow. Either Connolly has lent his famous name to someone else’s inferior product, or he has completely lost interest in the terrific world that he created, and is just producing stories mechanically, to meet his contractual obligations. Such a shame.

The book is great because it covers many of the civil and criminal areas that private investigators work in today, as well as providing insight into conducting investigations, practice tests and tips to do well on the exam.

Great study guide. Really good practice questions after each study topic.

Helpful, but not enough information to help you pass the private investigator exam. The DVD was not very helpful either.

I can tell you out a doubt this is a great book to use to prepare for the Private Investigator Exams. The book is structured very well with test taking strategies to start with to prepare and get your mind set straight for studying for the test. The writers break the study guide out so it is easier to prepare for the exam. They have four sections and within the section they prepare you with study guide information and then practice questions. But it doesn't stop there they then explain the answers in depth to again hammer home this material. In my eyes this is a VERY WELL written and structured study guide and practice test questions. I went though this book twice and am very comfortable in my preparation for the upcoming exam!I highly recommend this handbook to anyone that is preparing for the Private Investigator Exam. What I like most about the Test Prep Book Private Investigator Handbook is how updated the questions are. Knowing how difficult the questions are in the book allows me to feel more confident when it comes time to take the exam. What I like most about this handbook is how it provides test questions and explanations as to why which answer was best and why the other choices in the question were wrong.

The Study guide was very informative . I especially liked the case & testimony along with the evidence collection. It breaks down several different types of reports in great detail. It also has several practice questions and lengthy explanations which I found helpful .

I felt that this is worth the price. Although the book is very data intensive, is easy to read and will properly prepare the reader for a career in Private Investigation. This book will help anyone who purchases it.

The private investigator handbook is a great source of information to an investigator. I have been involved in investigations of all types and this books gives sound pieces of advice and bring important information. I want to thank all individuals who worked on this book. This book is a wonderfully informing read and practical application of a 12th Century woman's life wisdom for all readers today.I was thrilled to find an author who was willing to apply the wisdom of our historical church leaders for everyday reading.Practical application of the wisdom from our Christian heritage was constantly on my mind as I completed course workfor a degree in a Masters Program in Christian Spirituality. How to communicate the truths I was finding to the non scholarwas a concern for me throughout as I wanted to share the valuable "lessons learned" with the church at large.This book does an excellent job in applying Hildegard's insights for both the scholar and interested lay person wanting to learnmore about Spirituality and it's historical role in religion AND it's practical application for today!

I really liked this book, but my main "critique" would be that I would prefer it to have been a just bit heavier on the historical side. Fox compared Hildegard to more contemporary figures (mostly 20th century). In doing this the chapters were a little light on Hildegard (and her writings) and a little heavy on the comparison figures (such as Mary Oliver and Howard Thurman). However, this information made the book interesting in its own right. Overall I appreciated the way Fox attempted to present Hildegard as being relevant to a modern audience. Of course he wrote from a modern perspective- every modern researcher/reader does this on some level - it is just a matter of degree. Again I really enjoyed this book but not for the reasons I initially thought I would! If your looking for an in-depth historical study of Hildegard this is not the book for you- but if your interested in reading her teachings in the context of modern and social issues than you would greatly benefit from reading this work!

Odd book. Fox has a rambling style of writing and pours out his thoughts about Hildegard while providing almost no information about Hildegard. Left me confused.

OK, she was a German nun. She was also an amazingly creative person and a feminist way ahead of her time. Sometimes while reading this I was amazed that the Roman Catholic Church not only tolerated her writings, but named her a Doctor of the Church. She apparently inherited a vast treasury of Celtic spirituality and if one is drawn to that in their own spiritual quest, I would say that this book is a precious resource.

I love Matthew Fox's writing, but this seemed to be a bit of a rehash of his other works which for me was disappointing because I really wanted to know about Hildegard so I ordered another book about her which is giving me more of what I was looking for, but having said that, I think I am going to have to read her works by her, not someone's interpretation of her words.

An incredible summary of Hildegard's spirituality. Matthew Fox discusses, with an incredible skill, the relevance of her thinking and outlook on the world - to today's current world situation; with fascinating comparisons with Mary Oliver's mystical poetry, Albert Einstein's quantum, global view, and Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes' "Wild Woman" wisdom and creativity . . . an extraordinary expressive tribute to Hildegard.

It would be difficult to study Hildegard of Bingen on one's own. She lived in the 12th century, and though she left a host of writings, paintings, music, just cataloguing them would be a daunting task. Matthew Fox has spent decades doing just that, and given us a very readable overview of a remarkable woman. He sees her as a voice that speaks well to our time, and finds interesting parallels between her writings and that of more modern thinkers. It's an eclectic crowd including Albert Einstein and Howard Thurman, two disparate men with surprisingly similar views. She is a mystic, a poet, a composer, a god-drunk warrior who challenged the church of her day with passion and no fear at all. Her insights into spirituality precedes St. Francis and Meister Eckhart, making one wonder why she did not remain better known down through the centuries. The answer to that may simply be she was a woman. Who would expect wisdom from a female? Fox has given her a new audience and we are the richer for it. Perhaps we will have more receptive minds than history has given her. I have only one caution: when anyone finds so many similarities between an ancient and his or her own philosophy, and that ancient is not always available to speak for him or her self on the matter, we must make allowances for the preconceived notions of the reporter. I personally like Fox and have gained much from his analysis of Meister Eckhart. But I wonder if he and Hildegard really would have fit so neatly into Fox's views. That said, there is much to be pondered in this book that is well worth your time. It keeps it's five stars from me.

Matthew Fox is well-known for his many publications on creative spirituality and less for his biographies so the present work will come as a welcomed surprise to his readers and newcomers who are uninitiated to the Fox-enthusiasm and religious insights. He takes the very well-known 13th c. saint and centerpiece of the German mystical movement and places her in the 21st century struggles of women and men in search for a role model in creative religiosity and spirituality - a century of pedophilia, misogynism, and anti-women religious eminating from the Roman Curia and the halls of the Vatican affecting the lives of Catholic parishes and dioceses globally with the secrecy and misplaced favoritism of the Catholic Church leaders. If catholics needed a model of our time, Matthew Fox surely makes St. Hildegard a very likely candidate. Radical and not-so-but-unhappy radical Catholics will welcome Fox's insights.

I've probably read over thirty marriage books in the twenty years we've been married, plus numerous blogs and articles. Asking my husband what his thoughts and dreams are, what he'd like to change in our marriage, etc etc etc. Lots of things were helpful. But nothing was truly transforming the way this book and its companion, For Women Only, have been.We truly feel like newlyweds again except without any of the painful mistakes that newlyweds make. My husband said that this book really opened his eyes to so many things.And, each of us was surprised to know that our inner hurts and struggles were actually very common for our gender! It was actually a big relief.Pray for yourself, pray for your spouse, pray for your marriage, and read these books together. There is a spectrum for everything so talk about what applies to you and what doesn't.My husband rarely writes reviews on books so I'll recap what he told me about this book: "Some of the key points in this book I already knew in a vague way (after 20 years of marriage) but didn't know how to apply that to improve myself. And there were a few things that truly shocked me, like finding out you don't know how beautiful you are! Or that you wonder, so frequently, if I regret marrying you! Now I know what your heart longs for and I will give that to you, every day of my life. I will never stop pursuing you!"Swept off my feet!

it's helpful if you like a really "man next door" author voice. definitely take some of his generalizations with a grain of salt, as all women will be different.I gave this to my fiance after reading it and writing notes in it to let him know what did and didn't apply to me, and he really appreciated it.If you think your husband/SO will benefit from hearing traditional advice for men like "listen before talking," "she won't enjoy sex without romance," "she has a lot of complicated thoughts in her brain," and "women really struggle with body image, so give her lots of compliments," then this is the book for him!Fairly Biblical, but if you're a Christian, I might recommend more theology-based approaches like "Intimate Allies".

I read the "For Women Only" and decided to read this just out of curiosity. Men, I can tell you as a woman that I identified with so many things in this book and felt like "yes! That is me!" If you feel like you don't understand why your mother, sister, girlfriend, wife, etc is the way she is, I highly recommend this book! It touches on women's insecurities, what "security" means (hint: it's not just about the money), how women think and are wired differently than men, what we mean when we say "I don't want you to fix it; I just want you to listen!", women's sex drive and what that means (and does not mean) about you, and ultimately what you can do to show the woman in your life that you love and cherish her in the way that will make her understand that.Seriously guys, read it. Some things may not make sense because men and women ARE different, but this book will help you understand that your lady is not crazy. There is a rhyme and reason for how she is!

As a woman, I thought this book was very validating. YAY! I may be crazy but all of us women are-HAHAHA. Just kidding :) I love us women. We are awesome :) There are some commonalities that we share and it was very validating to understand that I am not the only one who feels this way. I recommend the corresponding book too, "For Women Only". Nicely written and easy to understand. It would be helpful if you are in a relationship to have a conversation with your partner about each book for additional insight.

This is a must read book. Ladies, read it and you will learn things about yourself you never realized. You will say, " spot on". Men, this is a must read to understand the female brain. I think every couple needs to read this.

Great read for both men and women but definitely men. I think some stuff in it a lot of women dont even know about themselves. Also for those who do know, it gives you great ways to actually put what you are feeling into words.For the men, if you read you MUST use it to your advantage and put into action. Not use it to down play your significant other. Use it to be more healthy in the way you communicate and interact with your significant other.

Love both this book and for women only, my husband and I both read this one, I recommend you read it first and highlight the areas you want your husband to really focus on and then have him read it. My husband doesn’t even like to read but he said he found this book sompletely eye opening and that he felt he could totally understand me in more ways than before. I recommend for any marriage!!! Especially a marriage that has some constant misunderstandings or lack of communication.

I have used this book often in working with couples and the corresponding book "For Women Only" as well. Very good insight for men & to how to relate to women & particularly their spouse. The author is careful not to generalize and allow for relationships that do not necessarily fit the majority or norm. My favorite part is the short list in a fold out in the front that gives 6 different insights on "Why does she?" Then Here is Why, & Here is What to do. Not a fix all but it does provide some great understanding. I have asked a good number of women if they can relate and they do. Some didn't completely agree but were happy to give some additional insight and thought it was helpful info for their husband.

There are so many things I truly enjoyed about this book so let's talk details!Tharaen is a captivating, imaginative, fast-paced, exceptionally well-crafted and edited, full-length standalone historical medieval time travel romance with paranormal, supernatural, and fantasy elements, and filled to the brim with compelling drama, pulse-pounding danger, edge-of-your-seat action, daring adventure, nail-biting suspense, heart-wrenching angst, steamy passion, and heartwarming romance. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with multiple perspectives and this story had quite a few. In some instances, multiple points of view can be somewhat confusing to the reader if they aren't skillfully written, but Hunter does an excellent job. All the perspectives are clearly discernible by individual chapters. I always enjoy stories written with clearly defined multiple perspectives. It allows me to know the thoughts of all the primary characters, not just the protagonists, and I especially love it when we know what's going on in the convoluted minds of the bad guys. I think it adds so much more depth to the story. The dialogue is smart, snappy, and flows effortlessly. Hunter obviously did her research because I found the language and terminology for the era to be authentic, articulate, and exceptionally well executed. In other words, Hunter's fourteenth-century characters spoke like fourteenth-century Scottish Highlanders. In reality, none of us would actually be able to understand a fourteenth-century Highlander, but Hunter did make them sound as realistic as possible, which definitely added to my enjoyment of this story. But without a doubt, my favorite element of every book is the characters, and this story is no exception. Hunter gives us a large cast of intriguing, engaging, and well-developed characters who literally explode from the pages, grab your imagination, demand your undivided attention, and completely capture your heart. I fell head over heels for the two protagonists, present-day San Diego Police Department Lieutenant Diana Burke and fourteenth-century Scottish Highlander Tharaen Aber. OMG! I loved these two characters! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed all the characters but Diana grabbed me in the very first chapter and I became completely smitten(obsessed...lol...) with huge, hunkalicious, highlander Tharaen Aber aka Raen when he was introduced in the first book of the series. Diana Burke is a tough-as-nails, six-foot female cop assigned to the missing person unit of the San Diego Police Department. Diana was abandoned at a police station as a child by her drug-addicted, prostitute mother and placed in a foster home where she was the victim of abuse and neglect. Fortunately, a San Diego police officer took an interest in her case and became her mentor, inspiring her to also choose a career in law enforcement. Diana is such a dedicated, determined, and realistic character with whom I connected on a very personal level. She's also a strong, independent woman with remarkable empathy and strength of character who fights for every breath and never accepts defeat. Diana's resolve to find missing person Captain Kinley Chandler, the heroine from the first book of the series, is only one example of her incredible tenacity, one which leads her to the surprising discovery of having much more in common with the missing Air Force captain than she ever could have imagined and, ultimately, to the same fate. Immortal Highlander Tharaen Aber was introduced in the first book of the series as friend and bodyguard to Lachlan McDonnel, Laird of Clan McDonnel of the Island of Skye, but in Book 2 we find Raen has now become seneschal(steward) of Clan McDonnel. Diana and Raen are perfect together and complement each other brilliantly! The interaction between these two remarkable characters is absolutely captivating, their attraction undeniable, and their fate inescapable. When these two meet, sparks fly and passion explodes, and I do mean quite literally! I snorted, snickered, sniffled, and sobbed through the entire story but by the end, I was happy, satisfied, and well entertained! Well done, Hazel Hunter! Well done, indeed!Did I like this book? You bet and I a but only for adult readers since it does contain several explicit love scenes! If you enjoy well-written medieval historical tales with supernatural elements, and liberally seasoned with time travel, action adventure, danger, drama, passion, and romance, then this book is screaming your name! And if you loved the movie and series Highlander, this story will, most likely, tickle your fancy! Will I read this author again? Absolutely! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! The scene setting and basic story were fine. The Immortals were brave and kind and tactful. The main woman character, however, was a disrespectful, aggressive, discourteous, interfering know-it-all. Truly annoying. I felt sorry for Tharaen, who would have to live with her and her self-centeredness forever.

Her mission was to investigate the disappearance ofKinley Chandler whom you remember on Lachlan. Her investigation brought her to the last placeKinley was in Horseshoe Canyon. Diana sensed that Kinley is still alive, she approached a spot on the Canyon,touched it and ended up in Medieval Scotland.Tharaen Aber is a bodyguard who found Diana lurking around Dun Aran Castle. He wandered what she was hoping toaccomplish. Tharaen cannot deny the attraction he felt for Diana. She assists everyone who is in need but the druidswants her gone.The sexual chemistry between Tharaen and Diana are so intense and hot.Will Diana find Kinley? Will Tharaen be able to convince the people to let Diana stay?Will they have their own HEA?This book was very hard to put down so I highly recommend my friends to read both stories.I look forward to more books from Ms Hunter.I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.

Really enjoyed the heroine in this story. Diana truly was honest, straightforward and a strong character. I liked that she didn't beat about the bush in her words or actions. Her insecurities didn't rule her and there was no drawn out emotional angst thankfully. A truly refreshing female lead.There were some pages I skimmed as the dialogue or story didn't offer anything useful to the scene, characters or story. Or they were a repeat of something I knew of a character or the story from a previous book. There were some rather slow scenes, and sudden jumps from inaction to action. A seamless build-up while still holding the tension in the story is required in the last chapter.Overall it was ok. I'm giving it a 4 star for the characters rather than the story plot itself in this instance.

After reading several of Hazel Hunters novels, I look forward to reading the next of her series. Her characters are worth reading about.The only two comments I have are:1. The symbols each highlander has are unique and interesting, but really creepy when it comes to the intimacy between the two loves. There's a third party in the room, or rather part of the intimacy, and it kinda gives off an air of an orgy. Usually skipped that part. My sensibilities can't seem to handle that part, but enjoy the story, nonetheless.2. Man, am I glad magic isn't part of my daily life.

Raen and Diana's story is the second book in the series. Their story is one of pain, betrayal, unforeseeable sorrow and heartache that they are able to overcome and find forgiveness, love, family and friends at the heart of everything.For Raen their relationship is moving too fast and deep down he fears losing Diana. Diana, however as no such hangups and feels a deep connection to Raen that she is willing and doing everything in her power to explore with him. But they are weary because there are others who are not looking forward to a relationship blooming between them and wishes to get rid of Diana.

I have read every book in this series so far and get completely sucked up into each volume. A great series with wonderful character development, excellent environment details and descriptions. A truly great series that everyone should read.

The Wheel of Time and I have an interesting relationship. Almost all of the characters totally infuriate me but I love the writing, cultures, world building and overall plots so even when in this book everything moves at a snail’s pace and almost nothing really happens plot wise I’m still thoroughly entertained and enjoy most of the story.But here is what I’ve learned during my time with the Wheel.❶ - The Wheel Weaves as the Wheel Wills.What does this mean exactly? Well it pretty much means that at any time anything can happen. Especially with Ta’veren about to increase the chances that the pattern will adjust to their needs at anytime.***“Untamed men are often the most interesting. To talk to.”A finger outlined his lips. “An untamed rogue who travels with Aes Sedai, a ta’veren who, I think, makes them a little afraid. Uneasy, at the least. It takes a man with a strong liver to make Aes Sedai uneasy. How will you bend the Pattern in Ebou Dar, just Mat Cauthon?”***❷ - There will be a prophecy or five and it will probably not go exactly how you think.***“The White Tower will be whole again, except for remnants cast out and scorned,whole and stronger than ever. Rand al’Thor will face the Amyrlin Seat and know her anger. The Black Tower will be rent in blood and fire, and sisters will walk its grounds. This I Foretell.”***Although most of this one could go like I think, the part about the Black Tower is still very up in the air.❸ - If you are from the Two Rivers then you are more likely to distrust the people you grew up with and completely trust someone who is most likely a darkfriend. Seriously this is that part that frustrates me the most. Rand, Mat and Perrin were best of friends growing up. Thick as thieves all of their lives. Now each is Ta’vern and has a specific part to play in the final battles to come and they are more likely to distrust each other than to try to help each other out. Actually often times when they do help each other it is by complete accident. And the women they grew up with Egwene and Nynaeve it is the same issue. You would almost think they were enemies the way they all treat one another instead of people who were close in a small village and grew up together.But throw a darkfriend or Forsaken in the midst of them and that is almost always the person they decide to trust with a ridiculous amount of information and power.❹ - If you can channel the one power then you lose some form of common sense. I seriously think that there is only a small section of Aes Sedai that I like. For the most part they seem far too arrogant and self-serving to actually get anything done. Even the ones I do/did like tend to go to extremes and I really want to smack them.***Mixing with Aes Sedai was too much like wading the streams in the Waterwood near to the Mire. However peaceful the surface, currents beneath could snatch you off your feet.***❺ - The details for the cultures and places is going to be fantastic and rich. You will definitely see not only the great differences but also the nuances between the Aiel, Domani, the Sea Folk and Seanchan. There are rich histories and reasons that each culture evolved as it did. This is really Jordan’s strong suit. He completely struggles a little with interpersonal relationships but the world building is impeccable.Even though this book barely moved any portion of the plot forward I still enjoyed most of it. There were a lot of great parts and fantastic characters. I did have a huge problem with one section thought and I’m totally going to go off on it for a second.As I said before, Jordan struggles with interpersonal relationships. Often for our main characters the jump from just meeting to being in love is really short and has very little page time dedicated to the buildup of an actual relationship. But in this book he really missed his mark with the character development he was trying to give Mat.What I believe Jordan was trying to do. Mat is a bit of a skirt chaser but we always get the sense that the skirts want to be chased and everyone is having a good time. But when Jordan tried to turn the tables on Mat and have a woman in power go after his attentions it is supposed to come off as a little funny and haha Mat how does it feel to have the tables turned. This is needed to set him up to be more receptive to the Daughter of the Nine Moons who he was prophesized to marry eventually. It was supposed to be cute and maybe a little funny What actually happened or at least how I saw it was totally and completely rape. Look I get that isn’t what he really wanted to come across but that is totally how I saw it. The Queen Tylin takes a liking to Mat and decides he is going to be her lover. She tries to get him alone, she limits what the kitchens will give him as food, she ambushes him in his rooms and when he tries to turn he down and move her away setting his hands on her she pulls her knife and there is a fade to black scene. The next day Mat is ashamed, wants to cry and doesn’t want anyone else to know. There is no mention that he loved it and wants to be with her. He acts like he was a victim and tries to avoid her at all costs.It was very poorly portrayed and if it was the man on the other end it would definitely totally be rape without question.If I didn’t think that it was totally not his intention to portray it in a comical sense I might have given up right there. Especially after how Elayne and Nynaeve treat the situation. But I’ll give Jordan a pass since all of the romantic entanglements have been handled almost as equally poorly.Best New Friendship Award - Goes to Mat and Birgetta. I love those two on page together. I’m glad Mat has one woman in his life that he likes to hang out with and isn’t interested in kissing.Non-Evil Character I want to push off a Cliff - This still goes to Elayne. The haughty daughter heir still drives me a bit crazy. She is a bit better with Avienda around to teach her Toh but I still don’t like her.OverallI’m still in it to win it and I was warned there would be a few slower books so I am prepared for them. Even though my review is a bit critical I really do like most of the characters when they are not being stupid to one another and like the intensity of the bad guys and the overall march to kill the dark one eventually. The Cultures, Magic and Mayhem make this series.

I very much enjoy serial stories. This one is mammoth! I think the author has moved a little slowly, but mostly, the reason I like it vs. loving it, is that I think he's been a little sloppy with the female characters. The story definitely wraps around the female characters; their persistence at not learning from their mistakes, their haughty and self-absorbed characters, and their very high self-beliefs make them tiring to read about. The central male characters aren't much better either.The author manages to introduce a new obstacle, or new magic, or new opponent in every book. The story is very well thought out and very well devised. I'm enjoying that aspect very much. I just hope his character development improves, cause it's a long road to go without that. It's almost like the focus is on the story with limited attention paid to character development. So. Having said all that, I'm still hooked and have gone on to the 8th book, which is really the 9th book because there was a prequel written that is numbered "0".

I'm sure Robert Jordan wasn't trying to be misogynistic when he wrote the Wheel of Time series. Indeed, he probably thought he was very forward thinking - after all, there are as many important female characters as there are males. But book 7 is a prime example of just how painful his character writing was.All of the women are very similar (because he based all the female characters on his wife), and all the male characters are also very similar (because he based them all on himself). This is true throughout the series, but it's especially noticeable in this volume. The women all feel that all men are idiots and need to be led by the nose for their own good. The men all feel that all women are manipulative and scheming (and they all are). None of the women knows how to show a modicum of respect to anybody. Attempts at respect come out as simpering and sniveling.And let's not forget that this book plays RAPE off for a laugh. Matrim Cauthin is being bedded against his will by the queen of Ebou Dar, and when he finally finds the courage to tell Elayne about it, she LAUGHS AT HIM, and says it's a taste of his own medicine (oh really? you think he's a rapist too?). Mat also spends the whole act complaining about how "This is a girl's place, not a man's" - because apparently being raped every night is only for "girls". The whole subplot is DISGUSTING and was not handled with the care and sensitivity that it should have been.I am still forcing myself to read the whole series because the world building is excellent, and the story is interesting. I just hate 99% of the characters, and spend most of my time yelling at them as I read (or listen to the audiobook). Most of Jordan's characters are pretty horrible people, with few redeeming factors (if any).
