This is an extremely well written account of what is currently known about the origin and evolution of the solar system. The book begins with the Big Bang and summarizes what is known about the history of the universe before the formation of the sun and its system of planets. It includes a nice summary of the history of solar system astronomy, from the early geocentric theories through Copernicus & Kepler and on to the more recent theories concerning the origin of the inner planets (including the moon), the outer planets, the asteroids, the comets, and the minor planets (including Pluto). Although the development and evolution of life on earth is not the main focus of the book, the authors do include a brief discussion of possible mechanisms for its origin and the influence of life on the history of the earth - especially it's atmosphere. The authors not only describe what is currently known or believed and how we know or why we believe them, but the earlier erroneous theories and how we came to know that they were in error. The book concludes with a description of the outstanding questions that remain to be answered and some of the space missions that are underway or planned to try to answer these questions.The book is well organized, partly on a historical basis and partly by the various classes of solar system objects. The progression of chapters made sense and there were references (& hyperlinks) to previous and following chapters at appropriate points. It is easily accessible to the general reader, and I certainly found it fascinating and engaging. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the exploration of the solar system or has ever wondered how it came to be.

I purchased this book in order to learn more about our solar system and it was okay for describing the origins but was lacking in describing the individual planets. The terrestrial planets were only given about a chapter and I was very disappointed that more was not said about them.

This book aims to give a quick overview of fundamental concepts in thermodynamics. It achieves that less than 50% ...The selection of content is good, however the author did not apply adequate effort to present it in a readable way with clear details. The exact same material is covered in "Elements of Physical Chemistry" by Atkins and Julio de Paula. The language there is much more readable (probably due to the second author) with more expanded details and pictures. However it is still more focused on chemistry than physics and you still won't see the Clausius derivation of entropy.Here are the main problems of the "Very Short Introduction":- the Clausius definition of entropy is dumped on the reader without derivation. If you are curious how entropy appears in thermodynamics, you are out of lack, and this is typical for most chemistry books.- the energy diagrams of two connected heat engines are best illustrated with numerical values, as many good physics books do, not with generic "Heat" which have different values for the two engines. The author completely forgets to mention that the energy flow is conserved on such a diagram so his first explanation of equivalence between Kelvin and Clausius statements will be lost on many readers that see these diagrams for the first time.- at many places the text is unpleasant to read and hard to understand due to pretentious dictionary words and several thoughts crammed into a single convoluted sentence:"Whereas lesser minds might view the heat source as the crucial component, or perhaps the vigorously reciprocating piston, Kelvin - as we shall anachronistically call him - saw otherwise: he identified the invisible as indispensible, seeing that the cold sink - often just the undersigned surroundings - is essential".- some examples in the book are missing small details vital to their understanding. For example, the book fails to mention that when a chemical reaction "releases energy", the change of internal energy from the initial products to the final products at the same temperature is negative, and even cites it as positive: "When 1L of gasoline is burned it produces carbon dioxide and water vapour. The change in internal energy is 33 MJ ....". Many beginners will be lost by such a flip of sign in the First Law and will not be able to follow the explanation, which renders it useless. Another example was not explaining why the entropy change of a heat engine is not taken into account when the total entropy change of the universe is calculated. Answer: a cyclic engine returns to the initial state of the same entropy.- the book is historically inaccurate on a few occasions. The formula for the efficiency of Carnot's engine was derived by Kelvin, not by Carnot as the book claims. Kelvin wrote a whole 40-50 page article on Carnot's book and was not "largely oblivious of Carnot's work" as Atkins claims.

The book is sound and concise.3. Does a great job of summarizing the properties of energy and its transformation from one form to another.4. Though intended for the masses this book does not short change the reader.5. Goes over every one of the four laws of thermodynamics in adequate detail.6. Effective use of charts and illustrations.7. The difference between dynamics and thermodynamics.8. Terms are well defined: temperature, gas, work, heat, enthalpy, entropy, etc...9. Name dropping...the scientific greats.10. Entropy and disorder.11. The importance of Gibbs energy in chemistry and in the field of bioenergetics.12. The process of sublimation.13. Absolute zero...cool.14. The Boltzmann distribution.15. The process of adiabatic demagnetization.16. A further reading section.Negatives:1. This is not as basic as the introductory series implies. Make no bones about it, thermodynamics is complex and even at its most basic it can be difficult.2. You must grasp the terms early on to progress effectively through the book.3. More quantitative than expected.4. No links to further reading material.In summary, this is a very good science book. The "A Very Short Introduction" series is a really good one intended for those who want to gain a basic understanding of a given topic in a concise manner. There are a certain number of people out there - people who hide their interest - who love to read about fonts. They come out when someone like Douglas Thomas publishes a book on fonts. His book, "Never Use Futura", isn't long but does do a good job of explaining the history and continued use of "Futura" in advertising and everyday life.Futura came to life in Germany in the 1927 by Paul Renner. It developed into a clean, sophisticated font after some tinkering and it soon took off. Go over to Wiki and bring up the section on Futura. They have a very good box with the lower case letters. Thomas's book has a larger box with all the letters and it's fascinating to see how Renner conceived the letters but changed the more complicated ones to a more simpler style. In Chapter One, about five pages in (I'm reading the eversion, which seems not to have page numbers but you'll find it if you look.) is a chart of Futura in pink and black. The capital letters are sleek and sophisticated but the lower case letters are delightful creations. Take a look at the "a", "b". "g". and "o" for their almost art deco shapes. Renner made them into more recognisable letters...ah...His book is very visual - as it should be - and the only thing I could find wrong - and why I'm giving the book 4 stars instead of 5 stars - is that he refers to Helvetica quite a lot, particularly in comparison to Futura, but he only gives one side by side examples of each. I know Helvetica fairly well, but I'd have loved to see them both together.
This is a great overview of the history of Futura type and its use over the the years. It was a quick and entertaining read that anyone who is not a graphic designer or typographer can understand. I now find myself wondering whether everything is some Futura variation.The only portion of the book I did not like was the brief tangent on the most recent US presidential election which will likely make this book seem dated in the near future.
Futura is one of the best and most iconic fonts in modern times. Indeed, everything about Futura screams modernism. Douglas Thomas addresses the font's history, ubiquity, uses and misuses. His title is a sly reference to the frequent warning not to use the font given by design and typography teachers everywhere. Of course, everybody ignores that rule.Here are a couple of fun things I learned:I am a Wes Anderson movie fan and, without realizing it at the time, Futura is one of the best parts about his movies.Donald Trump's campaign didn't use Futura. In fact, his "Make America Great Again" hats use the most basic and utilitarian font ever: Times New Roman.Nike owes much of its success to Futura. Its presence in Nike ads (and threaded directly into the shoes) have become a crucial part of the Nike brand.In short, the book is fascinating. Doug Thomas is a great writer who clearly is passionate about Futura. Anyone interested in cultural histories, design, pop culture, and especially typography should check out this book. (My only complaint is that the book is too short--it needs more space to delve more into an analysis of why Futura is such a persuasive design strategy.)
I was hoping this would be more of a coffee table book, but it's too small. However, it's got a lot of cool info (didn't know Supreme's logo was Futura Bold Oblique!) and it's fun to kick back and flip through it.
A book that will redefine the future and history of 20th and 21st century typography. Illuminative for everyone and a must read for graphic designers, historians and startups that have any kind of visual component,Never Use Futura... manages to be simultaneously groundbreaking and eminently readable. Thomas is obviously a gifted designer himself. The book is beautiful and much like typeface -- clean, modern and accessible all at once. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
This book is about a font, but in the process is about history, industrial design, and a hundred other things. A very interesting read which will make you think about things you see every day but don't really notice.

In this audiobook, her words are conversational but there are some very profound insights about Femininity and our roles as women in society.While there are lots of books on Female Wisdom (including much recycled knowledge), what Sobonfu Some reveals about women in her culture is more specific and rather unique. Hardly any indigenous women have revealed the secrets and understandings of their culture to the Western world. (Men like Malidoma Some and Martin Prechtel have made some inroads from the male perspective.) I found her views helpful in bringing a richer dimension to being a woman in our culture that expects women (and their concomitant biology) to conform to expectations set by spiritual amnesiacs.Don't expect her to sound like a scholar or a deep-throated wise woman. Her voice has the casual ease of a spunky girlfriend who tells it like it is.
Sobonfu is so wise and easy to listen to. Love it

I can listen while doing other things....I can use it for our sisters' group meetings.....family meetings.....brother meetings...for meditations....for elevation....to rise to the woman I know I am meant to be!

So much valuable wisdom. I felt invited to a circle of sacred knowledge. It's like some of those lil culturally relevant things you would learn from your Mama, Auntie or Grandmother etc. Especially valuable for those of us not priveledged to have those people as part of lives to share that knowledge and wisdom.I have the audiobook read by Sobonfu herself. I never had the opportunity to meet her in person, so i am especially grateful for this body of work she left for us.

Carol Woodbury uses great real world examples to relate security situations to simply understood everyday situations.Amazingly, it doesn't just contain general information but has the deep knowledge and tips from overall system security to users and groups to object security and more. Systems administrators will find the highlighted "Technical Notes" stand out on the page - which makes for easy use and quick reference.You can use the "Security Recommendation" notes for quick reference and as I proceeded through the book I realized they could be condensed as the security guidelines for IBM i in our company.Compliance is a huge effort for our team today and it was great to find a book that understands the complexity involved in getting there. The guidelines set out here help us to convey the right ideas to our executives on how to move forward with that effort.In summary, IBM i & i5/OS Security & Compliance was well written, easy to read, and simple to understand. All the members of your security team need this book and will probably wear it out.
