Like most book lovers, I have read more books than I could possibly count. I have spent the past 2.5 decades reading book after book after book, specifically in the sci-fi and fantasy genres. Very few of these books have left as lasting an impression as Feed, a young adult sci-fi novel from author, M.T. Anderson [...].A brief quip on Anderson – he was born and raised in Massachusetts and lives there today.  He has been a radio DJ and a college professor and currently sits on the board of Vermont College of Fine Arts and National Children’s Book and Literary Alliance. Anderson has published over a dozen books since 1997.Feed takes place in the future…a future that isn’t too far away. All-powerful American corporations are obsessed with controlling consumerism, by any means necessary and at the expense of everything else. The planet is ecologically devastated, seemingly beyond repair, the mass production of goods too much for the planet to continue to handle.  Despite environmental risks and pleas from world’s leaders, American corporations continue to encourage consumerism. 73% of American citizens are connected to the feednet, a digital network accessible via an implant in the brain called a feed. The feed gives consumers direct access to digital information, instant purchasing, and if shared, memories of others.  In return, consumer profiles are created for each individual, allowing the feed to cater its advertising to the needs of that individual.Sounds a lot like the targeting advertising on desktop and mobile devices today, huh?What’s impressive is that Anderson wrote this story back in 2002, before Facebook’s infamous newsfeed and before tech companies had enough consumer data to create the algorithms of today that make ad tech intelligent. Some scifi geeks (me included) like to say that many a scifi idea has inspired many an inventor, and maybe Feed is one of them. Google revolutionized modern intellectualism by making information so easily accessible, yes, but when Feed was published, online advertising was NOTHING like what we see today…or in what Anderson depicted. That alone, fascinated me enough to keep reading.The story follows Titus and Violet, a teenage couple that meet, by accident, on the Moon during spring break. They are caught in the crossfire of a feed hack and wake up in a hospital. Their feeds have been shutdown for repair and their minds are quiet, forcing them to communicate the old fashioned way, without private feed chats (m-chatting). Titus’s feed was installed when he was an infant, but Violet’s wasn’t installed until age 7. Unlike any of his other friends, Violet questions the feed, the government, and their way of life. Refusing to allow the government to categorize her based on her data, she decides to make it her mission to confuse her feed. Titus, in love, tags along.I’ll stop there before I start to give too much away…but if I haven’t made it clear yet, READ THIS BOOK! As far as anti-consumerism books, this one is tops….I think it’s almost as good as Fight Club.  Where Fight Club takes place in present day, Feed’s setting is more technologically advanced, like Minority Report. If you like either of those stories, you’ll like Feed, guaranteed.
I was assigned this novel for my introduction to children's literature course.I despised reading this book. Each chapter was akin to pulling teeth, and the moronic characters made my skin crawl in the worse way possible. I wanted nothing more than to read the last page and be done with it, never to think of it again. The exact opposite occurred. The meaning began seeping into my head hours, days, weeks after I finished reading. My burning hate for this novel dwindled to a mild dislike to passing indifference and finally to pure enjoyment and appreciation.The prose is purposefully painful to read, and for this fact, it's wonderful. Anderson crafts his characters to be the worse humans possible at no fault of their own--they are oppressed under a capitalist system that has destroyed the environment and sucked away any intelligence they may have had. The opening section bombards the reader with fabricated slang, but as the novel progression, the slang becomes less distracting as you, the reader, becomes acquainted with the feed."Feed" is different from other dystopian young adult novels out there, and it's unfair to compare it to others. Anderson doesn't want to give us strong characters we can relate to, and he doesn't want us to think everything will be fine in the end. This novel is a warning. We have to stop being distracted and controlled by media and electronics and focus on fixing the issue that will eventually lead to humanity's demise down the road. The ultimate message of Feed? Once you've reached a certain point, there is no hope; there is no turning back."Everything must go."
I have this in paperback, kindle ebook and audiobook. Each one is just as good as the next. Hands down!As for story? It's about people you will hate. If not hate, not like. None of them are really very good people. It's the breakdown of everything. What happens when you have always on INTERNET piped directly into your brain with corporations running everything. It's just not good.Buy this book! Also, buy the audiobook as it's really amazing. Words can not express how well done that was.
In this (near?) future SF, the internet has moved inside everyone's head, or at least inside the heads of those who can afford it. The book comments sharply on our addiction to electronic devices, the triviality of much of what we attend to, and the way we're constantly being sold to.Anderson does clever things with language, inventing believable slang, for instance, in the way Scott Westerfield does in the Pretties series. My favorite is how he refers to education, which has been privatized and is now run by for-profit corporations. The main character talks of going to School, always capitalized and followed by a trademark symbol.I was disappointed as I drew near the end and the plot began to feel too similar to several other YA novels. Still this book has many original bits to recommend it.

It is a story which is so complex and convoluted that it takes a historian to even begin to do it justice. Fortunately, this book's author is not only an accomplished historian, well versed in his subject, but also a gifted writer. The result is a remarkable book about an almost indescribable and incomprehensible period in the world's history.So, if you've ever wondered about the hyperinflation in Germany following the Great War (WWI), and by extension what the REAL consequences of inflation, hyperinflation, deflation and depression might be, this is the book you've been looking for. In fact, I've only read one other book which even comes close; that being `The Fiat Money Inflation in France: How It Came, What it Brought, and How It Ended' by Andrew Dickson White. But this book is much more timely, much broader in scope, much more comprehensive, and much easier to relate to our more modern times.In it, you'll learn a lot and find the answers to many puzzling questions. Among them: what caused the inflation, what were its impacts, and why it was allowed to continue; which groups and social classes fared the best, which the worst, and why; how the inflation resulted in the redistribution of wealth; what happened to landlords, shop owners, government employees, members of unions, free workers, and pensioners, as well as the middle-class; what the man or woman on the street had to do simply to survive; who prospered, who lost everything, and why; what the government did and didn't do and what the impacts were on people at all social levels, and on industry; how the hyperinflation was finally ended, why the resulting deflation and depression was worse in many ways, and why; and what those living through the deflation/depression period had then to do in order to survive and, in some cases, prosper.There is also much anecdotal evidence as to just how much misery both inflation and deflation can cause. For example: the well dressed elderly man who couldn't afford two cents (American money) for a bag of apples; the little old lady who supported herself by selling her crucifix chain one tiny gold link at a tme; the foreign students who bought rows of houses out of their allowance; the substitution of paste-board coffins for wooden ones; the life insurance policies that eventually were worth less than their annual premiums; the banks that did away with smaller savings accounts because the paper required to book them was worth more that the money in the accounts; the man who said it was better to have a prostitute in the house than the corpse of a dead baby; the beggars who, in October 1923, purportedly wouldn't accept anything smaller than a one million mark note; and finally, that even with the first "billiard" [a thousand million million] and five billiard notes being printed in November 1923, people still clamored for more.Apart from the Weimar Republic: This book is essentially a case study in inflation and its aftermath which should be of interest to anyone contemplating or concerned about the current state of America's, and the world's economic future, and the direction America is headed. In reading it, it is well to keep in mind what Gunter Schmolders articulates (pg. 248), "With inflation alone can a government extinguish debt without repayment, or wage war and engage in other non-productive activities on a large scale: it is still not recognized as a tax by the tax-payer."In any event, if you do read this book, and if you are anything like me: You'll likely conclude, as I did, that everyone talks about inflation, but no one, especially the politicians who cause it, really knows what they are dealing with or what the consequences may be.

This book’s strength is the details of how hyperinflation impacted everyday life for citizens of post-WWI Germany. It’s weakness is that it doesn’t offer much background and context - the reader is expected to already have considerable knowledge about the Weimar Republic, how it came to be, what was going on politically in it and around it, and where it was headed. This is not an introductory text.The frequent mentions of how far the mark had fallen against the dollar and the pound at various points in time are important for the historical record, but feel repetitive as a reader. The author spends about every third page throwing out lists of numbers that eventually become so large as to be meaningless.
I got this book in October 2010 based on a recommendation from either BullionVault.com or another website devoted to providing a dissenting view to mainstream economics. It was first published in 1975, just four years after the Nixon administration had severed the last tie between gold and the U.S. dollar by closing the international “gold window†and terminating the right of foreign governments to exchange dollars for gold. At that time the prospect of an American hyperinflation seemed far off, even as inflation was rising fast, and those scratchy old silent-film clips of forlorn Germans pushing wheelbarrowfuls of banknotes to the bakery to buy bread were quaint and unreal-looking.As I type these words the price of gold is US$1,818 per ounce, an increase of 4400% since 1971, and last week Switzerland, long a bastion of monetary probity, gave up on maintaining the value of its franc and pegged it instead to the moribund Euro, joining the other major currencies in a death-spiral of competitive devaluation. For those aware of what hyperinflation is, the possibility of experiencing it for ourselves is becoming ever more plausible and imminent. Adam Fergusson’s book gives a detailed picture of how hyperinflation—the death of a paper currency—played out in a modern industrial economy in the 1920s. It’s not a pretty sight.I never knew much about the Weimar hyperinflation, but assumed that it had something to do with the payment of war reparations imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. And while Fergusson’s topic is not really the cause of the hyperinflation, he does eventually come out and say that war reparations probably had nothing to do with it. Instead we see a fledgling republic facing severe social and economic problems, but whose leadership throughout remains stubbornly timid and ignorant. The leaders of both the government and its central bank, as well as newspaper editors and other leaders of opinion, were almost unanimous in asserting that the inflation had nothing to do with the runaway printing of banknotes, which they saw as an effect rather than as a cause of rocketing prices.Hyperinflation inflicts severe suffering on almost everyone except those able to profit by making bets on the collapse of the currency. The suffering, though, is very unequally distributed, and the injustice of the whole process is one of its most striking features. With a whole generation of children malnourished, women selling their bodies for a pork chop, and retired civil servants dropping dead on the street from hunger and cold, you also have farmers hoarding bumper crops, unwilling to sell for worthless paper money, and industrialists in a frenzy of factory-building to make use of cheap credit. Some of the best parts of the book are extracts from the journals and letters of housewives describing what they see around them. They witness mob violence and exchange their pianos for potatoes.In other ways though I found the book to be a dry read, and I felt that it was really addressed to people who were already students of this period of German history and had a grasp of the people and events of that time. The author assumes a knowledge of the time and place that in my case was lacking, which made the reading tougher going. I also found that his style lacked fluency, which made things harder as well. A sentence taken at random: “The uncertainties to which these postponements gave rise in large measure accounted for the wild fluctuations of the mark during the year.†Another writer would have put this is a more readable way.All of that said, this book was for me very readable because of its relevance to the events unfolding around me in the world. The enormous federal budget deficits in the United States are starting to look like the Weimar deficits, and although printing presses are no longer used to create money, dollars are being created by the trillion—a figure that became familiar in Germany in the early 1920s. When I go shopping I’m struck by how much less my money buys than even a year ago, and I fully expect that prices will only accelerate upward from here.But does that mean we’re headed for actual hyperinflation? According to writers like James Turk of GoldMoney.com and John Williams of ShadowStats.com, yes we are. Williams, a longtime statistician with the U.S. federal government, thinks it will be in the next year or two.But are our governments as timid or as deep in denial as the Weimar republic? I’ll leave that question with you. Another thing I’ll leave with you is a favorite quote from another writer, Henry Hazlitt, an American journalist on economics and finance. In 1946 he wrote these words: "Inflation discourages all prudence and thrift. It encourages squandering, gambling, reckless waste of all kinds. It often makes it more profitable to speculate than to produce. It tears apart the whole fabric of stable economic relationships. Its inexcusable injustices drive men toward desperate remedies. It plants the seeds of fascism and communism. It leads men to demand totalitarian controls. About the Author
Ken Norman has been growing bonsai for over forty years. He and his wife Ann have an important collection of bonsai permanently displayed at Leonardslee Gardens, West Sussex, England. Ken is a past Chairman of both the Federation of British Bonsai Societies (FOBBS) and the Friends of the National Bonsai Collection (FNBC). He is also a founder member, past Chairman and current President of the Sussex Bonsai Group and has been involved in organizing national and international bonsai conventions. Ken is a member of the RHS Floral B Committee and with his wife exhibit their bonsai at major flower shows. Ken and Ann have been awarded six Gold Medals at the world famous Chelsea Flower Show, including a Gold Medal at Chelsea 2004. A highly respected bonsai artist, Ken lectures on and demonstrates the art of bonsai throughout the UK.

Yes, I like it. Apparently I liked it so much, I (unknowingly) bought it again. The first time I purchased this book, it was a beautiful coffee table book under another name: "Growing Bonsai: A practical encyclopedia". The first edition was exceptionally beautiful and just as fully informative as the second. For the price, I do suggest this instructional publication. Just don't accidentally purchase it again unless you, like me, have a nephew who is also passionate about bonsai and doesn't have it yet. =).The difference between this version of the book and the first is that this version is 1) smaller dimensions 2) a lower price It gives the same descriptions and knowledge (which is far more comprehensive than average how-to bonsai book). The only difference I can see is that the reader misses the wonderful experience of the larger photographs. I don't know if the table-top version of this book is still in active publication. THIS DIFFERENCE IS THE ONLY REASON I GAVE THIS BOOK A 4-STAR RATING INSTEAD OF A 5-STAR.. For an all-around guide into the world of bonsai, this is the book I would suggest. The only more informative source would be a book on specific bonsai species.
This book is an excellent addition to my bonsai library of 10 books or so. Starts with basic information and proceeds to more advanced information about bonsai, potting, pruning, selection of shrubs and trees, fertilizing, etc. I'm a long time bonsai enthusiast, but would not describe myself as an expert. I raise bonsai for fun. The book introduced me to trees and shrubs (Jade plant, for instance) that I never thought before could be cultivated as bonsai. Filled with beautiful photos of bonsai. Highly recommended whatever your level of expertise in bonsai.

He presents the subject and technique of bonsai in a friendly step-by- step manner, and negotiates past common bonsai pitfalls with uncanny ability. This book, so far, is the best bonsai book I've ever reviewed. It is a cornucopia of bonsai wisdom. With color photography next to the carefully documented techniques, there is little room for questioning the process. This book guides you with utter confidence and is truly invaluable. The page and photography layout is reason alone to purchase this fine book. You can't pick up this book without examining the fine bonsai specimens contained within. If you wish to save yourself hours of research and commentary by unknowledgeable authors and supposed experts this book belongs on your shelf.
Great reference but small print. Give me a break guys, is this a medicine bottle? I am an old man! I don't remember if there was a kindle version, I should have of got it!
Bought this in hopes it would answer questions about how to care for a gardenia bonsai, to be disappointed by lack of information, only mentioned as a type of bonsai. Did not even give clear instruction for flowering bonsai. The word "complete" is misleading.

I have many books on bonsai but this is definitely one of my favorite. It coveres most all the beginning information you will need to learn about this fascinating culture. It really covers the basic principles and gives much needed information to develop an interest for bonsai. There are many examples given of how-to technics and lots of helpful photographs. If I were to select a good beginners book for learning about bonsai, this would be the one. It's not just theory and not just a bunch of pretty pictures. It gives you the beginning skills needed to start your own prized bonsai

if you are an building junkie like me this will really get you off to a good start. Gives you the basics and fundamentals on buildings. go get this for class or if you are contractor. It really is like a mini bible for heating cooling and lighting. go get it
Probably the best energy efficiency book I've ever bought. Liked the third edition so much last spring and bought it then, even though I knew the 4th edition was coming out in the fall (and I bought it too). Clear, beautifully illustrated with great explanations of sometimes more complex topics. A great reference for not only architects, but engineers also (like me). A must have for anyone interested in sustainable design.
In good condition, my husband needed it for school! We are just glad to find it, so thank you!
This is a decent undergraduate level resource. It is a functional primer on many of the basics of sustainability including shading principles and heat transfer. The author encourages an improved understanding of many natural principles which were neglected in twentieth century building design. Interestingly, I have no desire to live in an elevated Japanese paper house in the hot humid climate of Chicago, and see a great deal of merit in mechanical cooling in hot humid climates. Never the less I think its a laudable goal for many of us to come to terms with these "natural" ways of dealing with climate.

This was an informative, yet unfortunate take on Caribbean life, specifically the island of Antigua (& Barbuda). It begins with what seems as an attack on tourists, but then as one continues to read an understanding of why this style is necessary. It drives home the point of the average tourist's naive perception of what it means to travel to and experience the paradise or island adventure of a "small place" and the lack of knowledge of the hidden face of the corruption, disparity, and racism in which island peoples commonly deal. It certainly opened my eyes to what kind of traveler I should be when experiencing foreign lands and other cultures. Despite initially being somewhat offended by what I perceived to be Ms. Kinkaid's unflattering perception of a tourist, I think this is a must read for those seeking exposure to universal, but hidden, realities. The book is a quick read with only about 75 pages (and large print). I finished it in a couple of hours, and I don't consider myself a fast reader.
In her book A Small Place the author Jamaica Kincaid reflects on the debilitating impacts of colonialism and slavery on her people, Antiguans. The narrator does not tell her audience, which are tourists, about the beauty of Antigua, the warm and beautiful weather of the country, or the magnificent even about beaches. She straightforwardly confronts her audience as tourists and informs them about their lack of awareness of the corrupt political system in the place they are visiting and the people who suffering consequently from outcomes. She is telling them if they were intelligent enough, they would not travel the long journey from their land to the place of Antigua in order to build up the corrupt political system. In this book, the most important themes that the author deals with are slavery, colonialism, corruption. The country is naturally beautiful and has thriving tourism industry, however, the underlining problems of corrupt system that was inherited from the slavery and colonialism, oppresses its citizens. The deep-rooted negative effects of these two brutal and inhumane systems are still visible in the political and socio economic situations of Antigua. The leaders are corrupt and work based on nepotism and political affiliations (Kincaid, 72). An irrefutable example, which the narrator uses, is the presence of Japanese made cars for taxi drivers. She states the reason why these luxurious and expensive cars are available for the drivers are because the government mandates their purchases and operations (5-6). These cars benefit the members of the government, not the people of Antigua. Her second example for the political corruption is the assignment of the Minister of Culture (46). The irony is that this minister is also the Minister of Education and Sports who controls all these offices for his advantage. She believes these offices exist for the purpose of exploitation and abuse, and not for the benefit of the country. The people of Antigua came out of slavery and colonialism, they still are suffering and are being abused and exploited by their own government.
This is a wonderful book! I had to read it for a college course, and it will change the way you think about other countries that are seen as the perfect vacation destinations. Great read.
A short but brutal look at colonialism. The form can be off putting as she writes in long almost extremely long sentences
Kincaid is a brilliant author with a refreshing point of view. She does not write passively, does not pull her punches, instead giving you the side of the story that the reader generally won't hear otherwise. It may end up making you a little uncomfortable if you're not ready for what you're going to read, but I can't bring myself to spoil it. I had read this for one of my history courses and it remains one of my favorite non-fiction texts.
