Without a doubt, this book will be a staple on my bookshelf for years to come. A North Star that I'll return to time after time to navigate the choppy waters of personal finances. Buy it, read it, and then read it again.I’ve read several personal finance books, and I'd rate this book as my favorite. It was the easiest read, the most comprehensive, and surprisingly refreshing. Rather than perpetuate thinly-veiled notions implied by your parents’ personal finance books of yesteryear (i.e., “personal finances are too complex for young professionalsâ€), the author debunks this myth in a thoughtful and coherent way.This book does a great job laying out practical solutions usable by all — from the experienced money manager to the upstart college grad. Despite its practicality, the book offers clever new approaches to personal finance planning and management such as "Passion Budgeting" and "Automating Your Financial Ecosystem", while also rearchitecting old adages with a modern perspective (e.g., paying off student loans the S.M.A.R.T. way). The author's advice is layered with a humorous yet salient reality check for readers. A challenging needle to thread — but the author does it skillfully.
Millennial Money Makeover covers the gamut of personal finance topics in a clear, simple, and structured manner. For many people who find themselves just starting out and cursing the school systems who never taught them how to manage their money, this is a great place to start. Richardson does a great job of aggregating today's best personal finance thinking (e.g., emergency funds, saving behaviors, etc.) to get the novice off and running quickly to financial freedom as well as brings some of his own fresh perspectives and frameworks (e.g., passion budgeting, etc.) so that even the most advanced financial experts can come away adding new tools to their tool belt.
I like to think I'm fairly savvy as a personal investor with plenty of room for improvement... This includes not just participation in equities or the occasional options trade or aggressive management of my 401k, but how i budget personally. I think I've gotten in a habit recently for how I tend to manage my money as well as my spending habits overall. Allowing my ego to take a moment to sit on the sidelines, I was recommended Millennial Money Makeover by a friend as a broad strokes approach to navigating my finances in a sensible fashion. I tend to steer away from financial playbooks but this was a refreshing take. I think Conor came across as incredibly honest and offered sensible, principled approaches to a lot of daily challenges that didn't have a lurking tone of condescension. This book was an engaging read that I think I'll find myself referencing regularly going forward.

Virtually anyone reading this book will have seen the movie, which is very faithful to the 19th century novel, penned by a former Union Civil War General named Lew Wallace. Wallace was “disgraced†at the Battle of Shiloh, but went on to serve capably and courageously. Following the war, Wallace pursued a successful political career before penning this work, which is acknowledged as the best selling religiously themed novel in history.Judah Ben-Hur is born to wealth and privilege as the son of a Jewish merchant in Jerusalem. His stunning fall and subsequent “resurrection†has been likened to that of the author, as has his religious awakening, as Ben-Hur’s path crosses and recrosses that of Jesus of Nazareth.Written in the late 19th century, much of the dialogue is in the form spoken during the time of Christ (i.e. sayest thou), but is easily understandable and at times quite beautiful. Nevertheless, there are periods in the story (most notably during Ben-Hur’s sojourn in Antioch) that are mind-numbingly boring as the author spends scores of pages in philosophical contemplation and florid description of the people and places that make up the story.My suggestion: Watch the movie. If you have already done so, I can’t say that reading the book will benefit your appreciation of the story.
This is a great classic, and the number one selling novel in the US in the 19th century. It is the original, without 20th century "improvements". The style is very old, but the depth is worth wading through. One thing that will put off readers who are not willing to be challenged is the dialog is in King James English (or semblance thereof). The reason for this is that this is "a tale of the Christ", as the subtitle indicates; our hero, Ben Hur, is a witness of events in the Gospels near the end of the novel. At the time the book was written, the only widely used English Bible was the King James, and it was considered inappropriate to "reword" the Bible. Therefore, any dialog from events in the Bible is taken verbatim from the King James, and for consistency (?), most of the rest of the dialog in the novel is also in King James English. Please beware of the fact that there is one edition of the "original" from the mid-20th century (published to go along with the 1959 movie) that updates the language and is easier reading, but the plot is different and the theology is missing. Like steak vs. hamburger, it does require a little more chewing, but the flavor is much better.
All I remembered about Ben Hur was the Charlton Heston movie, which I saw when I was young -- and all I remembered of that was the galley scenes and of course the chariot scene. The reason I bought and read the book was because of the title: A Tale of the Christ. About half way through the book, I did a Google Search on it and found that it was one of the most popular Christian pieces of literature of all time. I had no idea! I am only 82% of the way through the book, but will rank up there in the top 5 books of all time for me. I especially appreciate Ben Hur's struggle between his human desire for an earthly king, and his soul's need for a heavenly savior -- and the influences in his life to lead him to the truth. A book for all of humanity.
After reading The Robe this past spring I was inspired to read more classic Christian literature and Ben Hur topped my list, but it was a slow start. The language is old-fashioned and ponderous and took me a while to get used to. The description and imagery is minute in detail and while interesting, can be tedious to wade through. That said, the story was beautiful. I am always fascinated by juxtaposition of people’s lives in relation to history, especially the history surrounding the life and ministry of Jesus. The Hur’s are a pious Jewish family under the heavy-handed reign of Rome and Wallace gives us a honest and factual look into the heart and expectation the Jewish people had for their Messiah- wrapped in an action-packed, romantic, philosophical novel. Keep reading; you’ll eventually be grabbed by the story despite the telling of it.
The author does a masterful job of weaving Ben-Hur's story into the story of Jesus' life on earth. The characterizations are full and rich, the description of the settings is thorough and evocative, and the plot is well conceived, alternating between pulse-pounding action and philosophical/theological dialogue. Written as it was in the 19th century, this book uses King James English for the dialogue, which is notable, but I didn't find it overly distracting. I was thoroughly engrossed in the story from beginning to end.
Modern literature pales in comparison to how this story is told. Character development is deep and full. I have to say, I was surprised at the artistic license taken by both the Charlton Heston movie version as well as the 2015/16 remake. This story differs from both in marvelous ways. You won't be able to skim through this, it will force you to ponder and reflect. I'm so glad I decided to read this. A masterpiece!
I was exposed to this Christian tale as a kid watching the 1959 movie starring Charleton Heston. After seeing two other versions (CB DeMille 1920s version) and the latest watered down version (2016?) I tracked down the original novel written by the Civil War general. I was blown away - the film versions do not tell the complete story. The film version water down the story of the Magi, do not cover all of Messalah's personal background ( he had a girlfriend - the daughter of one of the Magi's), and the 1959 & 2016 versions do not expound on the books telling of Ben Hur raising 2 legions of Jews to fight for and support the Messiah. Remember that this novel (which became a best seller read by then US President Grant) was written in the 1870s so reading it requires more concentration.

Collection of humorous stories by Don Marquis, originally published from 1916 in Marquis's newspaper columns "The Sun Dial" in the New York Evening Sun and "The Lantern" in the New York Herald Tribune and published in book form in 1927. The stories center on Archy, a philosophical cockroach who types messages to the author in lowercase letters (being unable to activate the shift mechanism), and Mehitabel, a free-spirited alley cat whose motto is "toujours gai." After initial publication, the work and its sequels were usually published without capital letters. Archy and Mehitabel consists mostly of free-verse poems on such concerns of Archy's as transmigration of souls, social injustice, life in New York City, and death. I got these books for my 91 year old mother. She told me one morning that she was dreaming about Archy and Mehitable. I had never heard of them before as this is a little before my time. I was talking to a friend and she told me how Don Marquis used to have a newspaper Colum back in the day and how they made some of his writings into books. My mother has Macular Degeneration, so I read the books out loud to her. She was very tickled that I had purchased the books for her and I enjoy hearing the stories as well, such a nice change of pace from all of the things going on in this world.
This is one of my favorite books by one of my favorite writers. The two main characters, Archy and Mehitabel, dispense wisdom comments that are applicable to the world now even though they were written in the early 1900's. Don Marquis was an astute observer of people and the world and his views are valid today. I have this book in hard copy as well as Kindle format. George Herriman's drawings are priceless and add to the charm of the stories. I got my original copy of "archy and mehitabel" when I was a newlywed (many years ago) and it and the other books that comprise "the lives and times of archy and mehitabel" have become my go-to book, In fact, I own a black cat and named her Mehitabel.

His way out was to write columns in blank verse about Archy, a free verse poet reborn as a cockroach, and archy's raggle taggle alleycat friend mehitabel, who claimed to have been Cleopatra in a former life. His columns had been supposedly written by archy, one letter at a time. archy would climb to the top of Marquis's typewriter, then throw himself head first at the key he wanted to hit. He couldn't print capitals because he didn`t have the strength or reach to work the shift bar and a letter at the same time. Thus everything he wrote was in lower case with no punctuation.)archy's missals to his reporter friend are as enjoyable to read now as they were when they first appeared between 1916-1930. The political and social commentary that surfaces in some of them is dated now. It's the pieces about archy and mehitabel -a strange friendship--that are timeless. How can you not like a creature who writes: "i see things from the underside now/ thank you for the apple peelings in the wastepaper basket boss/ but your glue is getting so stale/ i cant eat it"? And mehitabel's devil-may-care approach to life (which usually treats her badly)? "i have had my ups and downs/ but wotthehell wotthehell/ yesterday scepters and crowns/ fried oysters and velvet gowns/ and today i herd with bums/ but wotthehell wotthehell..."archy and mehitabel was made into a not very good musical called Shinbone Alley. Carol Channing sang mehitabel's role on the short version recording of it. Channing was probably as good as you could get for mehitabel but unfortunately, the vehicle was inferior. For the true stuff, you still have to go these three collections of Marquis's columns. (The archyology books are only for fanatics -they're collections of the leftover pieces that somehow had not made it into he original collection.)
It's hard not to love the lyrics of Archy. In fact, I would argue that he's probably one of the greatest poets the 21st-century. It might sound like heresy to say the cockroach is such an amazing poet, but , Archy captures the national consciousness. He has so much to say about current events like the war, domestic life, traveling abroad . Lyrics are so frenzied and crazy that most people probably would put this book down after the first couple of pages, but if you allow yourself to drift into Archy's stream of consciousness, it's intensely gratifying experience unlike any other poetry ever read. That being said, I do feel that the e-book version has some quality issues. It seems like there were some typos in the conversion , and the formatting left a lot to be desired . I also would've liked to see some special features, simply more than just a text of the book itself . Overall, this was a great read , and just as memorable as when I read it the first time a few years ago. This book is one of my all-time favorites.
I first read archy and mehitabel fifty years ago, and that was already more than thirty five years after it had been written. It’s timeless, engaging, and toujours gai. There’s life in the old dame yet!
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed reading about Archy and Mehitabel many years ago. It's pretty hard to believe that Marquis created Archy almost a century ago - the writing still feels fresh and insightful. And it looks like we have many of the same issues today! The characters really come alive on the page, and apart from being wise, it's just plain fun to read. I would have given it 5 stars except for the typos scattered throughout the book - doesn't any human ever proof ebooks when they create them?? Things like "torn cat" instead of "tom cat" or "j" instead of "i". Hire a proofreader!!

This book, "When is Marriage Null" is an English translation of a 1998 Italian book of journal articles fleshing out the canonical grounds of marriage nullity. The author, Fr. Paolo Bianchi, sought to implement the particular law of the Italian Episcopal Conference in reference to educating the parochial "first responders" in facilitating the examination of non-superficial indications or legitimate grounds regarding the case of the potential plaintiff seeking a declaration of nullity prior to approaching a diocesan tribunal. "When is Marriage Null" is canonical caviar, an academic treatise that will most certainly stimulate the canonist who is interested in the field of marriage jurisprudence. Hands down, the finest work I have ever read.My two favorite areas of marriage law are canons 1097 (error) and 1095 (incapacity). Fr. Paolo dedicates over 75 pages (out of 315) to these two areas alone. He brilliantly explains the subjects so well (with real case examples) that I am struggling to see how this book can be useful for the non-canonist. I do, somewhat, believe that it can be an advantage for the non-canonist, but only up to a certain point. This book is the real deal and a gigantic treat for the lover of canon law. It is not like other books that you may stumble upon from time to time that seek to bring the Church's law into the mainstream arena, no, this book is very different. Pure gold! I love it!!!!!
This is a demanding book for someone who is not familiar with Canon Law. Each chapter addresses one of the grounds for annulment, and the examples provided at the end of each chapter make it easier to understand how the validity of a marriage is assessed in practice. Although it seems that most applications for nullity are approved these days in Western countries, some of the cases in the book involve marriages that were not declared null. In some cases the applicant spouse simply wanted to move on with their life and have their divorce rubber-stamped by the Church. Great review book. Questions are almost exactly like the ones on the FP-C exam. I studied this book exclusively for 3 weeks until about a week before my test when IAFCCP released their online study tool. I went through it one time and didn't find it to be as helpful except it showed that this book is a little lacking on the CAMTS requirement questions. I studied the CAMTS pdf off their website with Back to Basics for that last week and made a 93 on my first attempt on the test. This is the first product I recommend when people ask me how to study for FP-C/CCP-C.
I'm taking the CCT course in a couple of months, and purchased this as a primer and to see what I should brush up on before attending. I was happy to find that my paramedic program did an excellent job at some non-flight/non-CCT topics. I also found some topics which I need to study. For that purpose, the book worked for me.However, there were several issues I had with the text. Some are minor - like spelling mistakes or other small typos - sentences that are fragments or skip a thought. The occasional Wikipedia reference in the middle of the answers (linking to an actual reference listed in the end notes, but still an editing mistake) was amusing. There were some larger issues, though. I found several instances where a question would ask about one topic with possible answers that didn't make any sense, and the explanation would talk about a completely different topic. Then the following question would be related to the previous explanation, but would have it's own, appropriate explanation.As long as you don't mind some editing errors, it is a good book for the price.
Just successfully passed my FP-C. This book was my primary text with a good volume of questions and rationale. I studied this material until I not only mastered the answers but the rationale behind each answer. To be honest this is one of several resources I used. I also used:1. FAST by William Wingfield.......(I'd recommend purchasing this one as well)2. William Wingfields FP-C video review course (watched it twice)3. Quizlet (Look for FP-C review flashcards)4. FlightBridge.I over-studied......but felt like I passed fairly easily because of my preparation. Hope this helps.
I took and passed the CFRN test in October and was surprised by the amount of info that was not in this or the FlightBridges material. You obviously need to know the emergency and critical care elements that are reviewed in this book, but if you are looking to fly you had better already know those areas stone cold. The elements of aircraft operations and flight physiology that are found in AMRM is what you really need to be successful. This book is a very small piece of the preparation, not a " this is the only book you need" kind of thing.
Just passed the FP-C exam. This book covered a lot of content and had questions very similar to the actual exam. Only qualm is that there are many questions where either there is a major typo which changes the question leading to the answer making no sense (e.g what to do for an “ethanol overdose†then the answer says to give fomepizol and explains what to do for an ethylene glycol overdose) or the explanation contradicts the answer given (e.g the letter given as correct doesn’t match the explained answer).I would overall highly recommend this book but be prepared to be very frustrated by the little errors.
This was my main book I used for FP-C and passed first time. Questions are similar to FP-C and the question explanations are very detailed for the most part so if you don't know a subject it will help you understand the material. I found a few questions that were marked wrong so that was frustrating taking time to investigate it but these were few and far between. Overall a great book.
Very useful book. Helped me study for national CCTP board exam. Great format and explanations for answers where very helpful.
Although a good study guide overall I found many mistakes. Questions with no correct answers and then the explanation would talk about another issue completely. Question 8 in Ch 1 pg 15 for one, picture below. So be ready to research any questions you think may be incorrect. I would not use this as a sole study guide. It made me question many of the authors rationals.
