Just like the subtitle implies this book traces the beginnings of the formation of a gay identity in the LGBT community and the various twists and turns that it took leading up to the Stonewall Uprising. The author makes the point that the Gay rights movement did not begin with Stonewall but actually began with the creation of a gay identity starting to coalesce in the beginning of the 20th century. The author looks at how event like the 2nd world war brought gay men and lesbians together in urban areas and the realization that they were not alone but that there was a sizable group of people like them. The earliest groups like the Mattachine Society and the Daughter of Bilitis were small but influential groups in that they helped begin the discussion of gay rights the fight agains discrimination and whether LGBT's should take a passive approach to larger society hoping for acceptance or if they should actively fight for their rights. The author argues that while these groups were small and often fragmented and in no way could be called a mass movement their importance lies in the fact that they were the first ones to raise these questions and have a public discussion on them and by doing this raised awareness in the LGBT community and spurred the formation of a common identity. I found this book very interesting especially in how the gay rights movement had some of the same issues and challenges that the Civil rights movement faced and the women's rights movements had and how all of these movements would kind of coalesce in the 60's The discussion of the creation of a Gay identity was informative and I would have liked to seen more on that. the author makes several suggestions in the afterwards on books that have been written since his that could be helpful on this topic. Like any good academic history text it raises just as many questions as it answers and I think that this is one of the books that any now interested in Queer studies and women's rights should read. Many other books have been written since this one on various topics raised in this book but this is one of the first ones to bring several of these historic problems up and set the stage for later books.
This book shows how in times of great threat (e.g the cold war and nuclear war) weaker men turn on easy domestic targets rather than creating real defence. Homosexuals have always been a very small minority and were an easy target. Edmond Burke (during the social stress of the French Revolution and subsequent war) talks about how men not bonded to a clear national indentity or who lack patriotism to a national identity form factions or religious/social groups out of fear and greed. Weaker men often use these groups at times of social stress to gain financially or allieviate their fears by attacking a weaker minority group. The book shows how homosexuals where misused in pseudo class wars post WWII. These circumstances have reappeared in different forms at the time of the same sex marriage debates. Firstly the psychological elimination of homosexuals by wording it "same sex" not "homo sexual" marriage. This takes the homosexual out of the debate and allows the debate to be dominated by political opportunists, heterosexuals or rather bi-sexuals. This type of arguement was part of the 1950's attack on homosexuals. That bisexuality was more normal and that bisexuality was then used to create heterosexual "norms". The book clearly shows how some public servants entrusted with the civil duty of care to all citizens misused power. How they interacted with groups outside the public service to enhance the effect of their own hatred. To keep things in persective better citizens were creating the USA's great defence system, space program and rebuilding a world shattered by WWII while creating defence against a new military threat which threatened even more lives. I also read " And they were wonderful teachers" Florida's purge of gay and lesbian teachers. This shows how corrupted men used the gay scare to attack women with intrusive questions about their sexual lives. Will these types of attack increase during the same sex marraiage debates. These questions show no care for women, lesbians or homosexuals. This type of attack on economically and political free woman has been common in history. President George Washington in "Rules of civilty and decent conduct" advises us to ignore those who bring inappropriate public attention to private matters. He cautions not to publically engage verbally or any other way in such matters

There were a few tomes about great historical figures who happened to be gay, and Jonathan Katz's landmark "Gay American History," but virtually nothing about the gay men and women after World War II who fought amazing hostility, made countless strategic errors, suffered profound personal losses, and still managed to organize a movement that changed the way we all view individual rights in a civil society. Even publishing the first edition in 1983 was an act of courage.Today gay history is a thriving discipline, and the story has been told countless times, often more engagingly. For general readers, I recommend John Loughery's "The Other Side of Silence" and Lilian Faderman's "Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers." But for students and scholars, this is a model of historical research and an inspiration.
John D'emilio's book clearly make the point about the minority status of the homosexual in America. The start of the first organizations to promote a homosexual presents, with their naive belief that they would be excepted, to the more militant efforts in the early sixties. D'emilio has documented carefully the many events of importants that led up the the stonewall riot. Making it clear that the fight didn't begin at stonewall, but many years before. He talks in detail about the different organizations that started, and how they developed and changed as the struggle continued. D'emilio did his homework on this one without question. If you were ever curious about the events that started the gay revolution this is a must read.

Was looking forward to reading this book sounded like a good story, but it was more about the sex (not believable at all) and not the wrong that was done to the couple and how that got back at the one that wronged them.
Just a real short story and it’s not really a story! The book is just about them having sex constantly, with no story at all. It could have been so much better with a little more imagination on Madison’s part. Wouldn’t recommend this as a good read. Happy reading!
Steamy a quick read. Another hot hit from this author. She is the queen of hot and sexy reads, her novellas practically set my kindle on fire. Brooks is determined to get his wife back. They were separated through miscommunications and lies but he wants her back now. They both were lied to by her father in order to keep them separate. Leanne doesn’t know the lies her father told and is astonished to see Brooks a year later while out on a date. He takes them back to the beach house they shared while married and reconnect. They both find out that they still love each other and the separation only made them love each other more. I highly recommend this author and all of her books!
3.5 StarsThis book was short, sexy, sweet and to the point!Since I've been reading a lot of romantic suspense lately, I was looking for something short with a sexy, possessive alpha. I totally found that with Taking Back His Bride. Just be warned there is no substance to this book other than a man obsessed with getting back his wife and a whole lot of dirt. But it was just what I needed at the time.Because Brooks has been overseas on a drilling rig he could do nothing when he got the news that his beautiful wife, Leanna, divorced him. After a year goes by and Brooks had made a fortune, he comes back for his wife. Of course when he finds her, and all is revealed, and much manipulation and deceit are the culprits. I won't give details because like I said, this book is a super quick read. But I will say that while this book contains a dirty talking, possessive alpha, I thought Brooks was so sweet too.I do wish we got to see Leanna and Brooks when they met and married instead of jumping three years but still, a good book.This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)
Good grief Madison your books can set a building on fire. You have such a dirty mind and I love it. It intrigues me how hot your heroes are yet they displace a sweetness that is so gentle towards the heroines. Brooks was no different although he was smoking hot he was not ashamed to constantly tell and show Leanna how much he loved her. There is always something hot about a man who shows is softer side. I liked that in this story there wasn’t that annoying back and forth game playing that takes place in so many romance books. Yea Brooks and Leanna. I will never tire of your books so keep them coming.
Definitely wish the storylines to both Brooks and Leanna were fleshed out more. Maybe wait out a little more on their reunion and build the suspense to make it that much sweeter. Also her dad as the villain could've been more distracting for them than it actually was. Might be weird to want a bigger villain plotline or twist, but I think it would've added that something extra that the story needs. Still a fun treat to read!
This is a very short story with lots of steam with a little bit of story intermixed. Brooks is out on the oil rigs that he works on when he gets divorce papers from his wife Leanna. Thinking she has found someone else, he finishes his job and throws himself into his work. When his job is over and he comes back to the mainland, he sees Leanna and learns that they both have been lied to by her father who never wanted her to marry him anyway. This book is mostly about these two getting back together and making up for lost time. Would have liked more story behind the deception and more of what the two of them did during that time apart. Angst and hot sex with some story thrown in - this could have been so much better with more of the plot thrown in to let the readers know how these two survived and her father getting his comeuppance. But it was enjoyable and good way to pass an afternoon.
Taking Back His Bride was entertaining. Madison Faye gives you a sweet and sexy story about a husband and wife who embark on a second chance at romance. Brooks is a blue collar type of guy. Leanna comes from money. Despite their differences, they love each other or did until someone put a wedge between them. Brooks is working hard to win back the heart of Leanna. Will they get their second chance at happiness? This book was short, steamy, intriguing and fun. It's a must read for romance lovers.

I've been called an Old Testament Christian before, so it's not likely a surprise that I would like this book. But Ellen Davis does something special and unexpected here, because I don't agree with her on a number of points. Still, this book gave me a view of a facet of the diamond that is the Gospel that, frankly, I'd never seen.The book is divided into five sections: the Psalms, Love, Wisdom, Disciplines of the Heart and Ecotheology.Here are some things that opened Scripture up for me through this book:1. How can we reconcile those hard Psalms--the ones that pray for the destruction of our enemies? Davis reminds us that the Psalms "are undisgussedly human utterances (pg. 9)." While the rest of the Bible is formatted as God's Word/message to us, the Psalms are our imperfect prayer to God--God's Word THROUGH us. And as imperfect beings, harshness shows through. When pressure from the outside mounts, then the Psalmist leans in with "cries of anguish and rage [that] would seem to violate all the rules for Christian prayer." (pg. 14) Davis points out that this truth of heart to God is the first step toward praise. The answer I loved here is this idea that these Psalms show real-time conversion back to the heart and mindset of God. The Psalmist almost always comes out a different door than he went in."The point of the shocking psalms is not to sanctify what is shameful (for example, the desire for sweet revenge) or to make us feel better about parts of ourselves that stand in need of change. Rather, the Psalms teach us that profound change happens always in the presence of God. " (pg. 5)"So the Psalms call for honest speech, but honesty is not everything in an intimate relationship. We must also speak wisely, at least some of the time." (pg. 9)2. OK, I get that, but how do we reconcile the seemingly totally wrong, disrespectful and accusatory prayers? Don't they pray for others destruction? Who is that God? Davis points out that Psalms 1-72 are dominated by a focus on self. They are full of "I" and "me" and and accuse God of all sorts of terrible deeds. They push and prod. They tell God to leave well enough alone and pray down destruction on the heads of their enemies and even children. "These cries of anguish and rage would seem to violate all the rules of Christian prayer." (pg. 14)Davis helped to sharpen my focus on these prayers by pointing out "When you lament in good faith, opening yourself to God honestly and fully-no matter what you have to say-then you are beginning to clear the way for praise. . . . When you lament, you are asking God to create the conditions in which it will become possible for you to offer praise-conditions, it turns out, that are mainly within your own heart." (pg. 15)These psalms begin with God and mark the beginning of our journey, but also with acknowledgement, from the Psalmist, that the God who created the heavens actually cares about us. Davis points out what a remarkable assumption that actually is, but that "the lament psalms regularly trace a movement from complaint to confidence in God, from desperate petition to anticipatory praise. ... The fact that the Psalms never clearly report a change in external circumstances is one mark of the Bible's persistent realisim. ... One further mark of the realism of the Psalter is the fact that it includes two psalms-Psalms 38 and 88-that make no turn toward praise." (pg. 21) This real time turning of men in the midst of terrible circumstances shows us how we can begin and move through tragedy.Lastly, Davis reminded me, when considering the hurt experienced by the Psalter, to ask, "Is there anyone in the community of God's people who might want to say this to God about me-or maybe, about us?" (pg. 28) Putting ourselves on the pointed end of the Psalter's prayer gives a new perspective to this challenging text.This is getting a little long, so I'll wrap up. I love this book. I don't align with everything Davis says (especially the way Davis seems to limit the power of God in Chapter 6 and the power within Ecclesiastes in Chapter 9), and felt that such a great book was lessened by what seemed like a thrown together fifth section-devoid of the critical eye and research that I appreciated throughout the rest of the book. Despite those weaknesses, this book helped me with the above and Chapter 7, on the Song of Solomon should be required reading for all Christians. It opened in me a view of the love of Christ that has me as the pursued.I learned more from this book that I' could possibly share here, and I pray that others will search for the wisdom contained here.Here's SOME THINGS I UNDERLINED:"If God has a best friend (and why not?), then surely it is Moses." (pg. 46)"God accommodates [Moses'] complaints and makes in-course corrections. God does not take a human being so fully into the divine confidence--you might say, God does not depend on a human being so fully--until Mary conceives by the Holy Spirit." (pg. 16)"The Song [of Solomon] captures the ecstatic aspect of love that is the main subject of the whole Bible." (pg. 67)"That the Old Testament represents God chiefly as angry Judge and vicious Warrior is a false stereotype. While these images are not absent, they are more than balanced by striking portrayals of God as Lover or Husband, infatuated with Israel beyond all reason or deserving. God is not too proud to grieve terribly over Israel's unfaithfulness, nor to be giddy over her return home. ... [This covenant's] primary quality is love at the highest pitch of intensity." (pg. 77)"The very idea of wisdom, as the Bible understands it, challenges the mind-set of our society and the view of knowledge that all of us have to some extent internalized." (pg. 94)"...consider how [the Proverbs] define success: the establishment of righteousness, justice and equity." (pg. 95)"But 'true wisdom is such that no evil use can ever be made of it.' That is worth our pondering because we, more than any previous generation, are witnessing the evil effects of perverted knowledge, knowledge not essentially connected to goodness. ... No other generation has been so successful at using its technological knowledge in order to manipulate the world and satisfy its own appetites." (pg. 96)"The sufferer who keeps looking for God has, in the end, privileged knowledge. ... She passes through a door that only pain will open, and is thus qualified to speak of God in a way that others, whom we generally call more fortunate, cannot speak." (pg. 122)"The fourth-century Greek theologian St. John Chrysostom said that Job's greatest trial was that his wife was not taken." (pg. 125)"...our role as comforters is not to solve the problem of pain; even less is it to stick up for God. Trying to vindicate God to a person in agonizing pain is like explaining to a crying infant that Mommy is really a well-intentioned person. ... While [Job's friends] remain mired in their convictions, Job is moving." (pg. 130)"...Job rails against God, not as a skeptic, not as a stranger to God's justice, but precisely as a believer. It is the very depth of Job's commitment to God's ethical vision that makes his rage so fierce, and that will finally compel an answer from God." (pg. 133)"The Garden of Eden was the place where the first human creatures might have acquired wisdom: Eden was the place for total intimacy with God, and that is the sole condition fur becoming wise. Day by day they might have grown in wisdom and stature, taking those strolls with God in 'the breezy time of day" (Genesis 3:8). But they could not wait to get smart, so they chose the quick and dirty method..." (pg. 149)"For us the true measure of our wisdom will never be the grade point average we covet, a degree or rank, the right job, the book accepted by a prestigious press. No, we will be wise when we desire with heart, soul, mind, and strength only the things that God also desires for us--and nothing else compels us, or ever catches our wandering eye." (pg. 151)"Worship is a vigorous act of reordering our desires in the light of God's burning desire for the wellness of all creation." (pg. 152)"And there we recognize that our frailty is not meant to cause us anxiety and sorrow. Rather, God means it to be a source of confidence, and even, as it was for Etty [the Dutch Jew previously mentioned that died in Auschwitz], a source of joy. For it is exactly that frailty--the strict limits to our powers, their inevitable failure, the certainty of death--that creates the need and the desire to see God's power at work..." (pg. 167)"Contrition means finding the courage to let your heart break over sin. Willfully letting your heart break and then offering the pieces to God is a radically counter cultural idea in our society" (pg. 168)There are so many other things I underlined here, but for now, I'LL END WITH A PRAYER:Lord of all, Creator of the universe, Motivator of all that is Good, Thank you. Thank you for the beauty that is Wisdom visited on this person, Ellen Davis, and the expression of her love that is this wonderful book. I don't question Your great motives and You don't owe me anything, but there is excellence here in tiny corners of smallish books and forgotten lectures that could change everything. Release this wisdom. Release this love and let us, let every man that has thought he checked the box on the Gospel, and let every woman who purchased a neat little bowl to put on a very special shelf to hold the Gospel--let each and every one of us know that within You, within your Word, there is something beyond all value. Let us see that men gladly gave their lives so that we could just experience this moment and decide. Nudge us toward the Light, Lord, and bless the nudgers, like Davis, who carry the water for tens of years so that one or two or ten thousand may drink. We sow and water, Lord. You provide the increase. I love You. Amen.
Dr. Davis has done a great job in discovering the word of God. She beautifully illustrates the meanings, the concept beyond some characters/statements, relationships, and deep thoughts of main characters of each chapter of the book of Exodus and ...Each chapter of this book recounts a unique journey along the deep understanding of each story or event. In one you see the beauty of God's love toward human and yet His holiness. In another one, it helps you to see a rational relation between the Bible (the law) with humankind and his lifestyle in 21st century and more.I do recommend this book to pastors, seminary students and layman. This book will make you think to come up with good topic of sermons as well.
It's a text book for a class I'm taking at the church I go to. It's a wonderful book - easy to read but full of new insights on the meanings of the old testament stories .The author is a scholar who translates from the original Hebrew and explains why she uses the words she chooses. I ordered a used paperback for a very low price. What came was clearly brand new - for the same agreed-on price. I'm very pleased with the book.
We used this book in our fall Adult Formation class--(Episcopal church) and it was pretty unanimous that we all liked it. The author explores some of the more difficult, dark passages that we rarely see in our weekly lessons, to find ultimately that the God of the old testament is also a god of love, compassion, relationship. This author also brought us ideas that many of us hadn't thought of before, & surprised many of us with where she went as the book progressed. The book is divided into 5 parts, several chapters each, & we discussed the book over 5 weeks. Bravo! A fine book which, when also used in discussion, lead us to a deepening of our faith.
Terrific book. It was part a group of assigned texts for a graduate OT class. However, don't let that discourage you, if you're a lay person, from reading it. It is very approachable. I'm thinking about using this as a book study for an adult Sunday school class.Davis' writing style is such that she invites you in by offering a spiritual as well as a scholarly look at the OT. Now, if I could only find time to read the rest of her books.
In her book, Getting Involved With God, Ellen F Davis, sends a message of divine hope held in the Old Testament. She dares us to put away our preconceived notion about the OT being a book of wars and savagery instead showing us over and over the abundance of God’s love for all his creation. We need to pay attention!
I bought this book for a bible study class in 2009 and found it to be interesting and easy to follow... a little too easy as a matter of fact. I would have liked it if Prof. Davis had gotten a little more in-depth on some of the topics. I realize she was probably writing this book for a wide audience, but I wish she had had more of a mind towards an intellectual crowd as I often found the essays ending just as she was getting to the most interesting points. Maybe I'll have to track down some of her other work for that.
After I heard the author speak on NPR, I couldn't find this book at my local library, so I finally ordered it. I'm glad I did, and will pass it on to other serious Christian friends. It is based on a series of sermons or lessons by an Episcopal clergywoman. She comments on the Psalms, both joyful and lamenting, emphasizing the tradition prayer and of of turning to God in all seasons, Ecclesiastes, Proverbs and Job. She affrms the earth and connection to it as live-giving. As an environmental advocate, I agree with her point of view; but she does present what are inconvenient truths for some.

This book is awesome. It has just a few words on each page, easily understandable pictures, and is educational for toddlers without seeming to be so. This book puts the fun of the reading way ahead of the "being educational" without losing any learning value.
This was a favorite of my kids so I'm now getting it for my grandkids. The spine of this book is just cheap paper and it isn't going to last. As soon as the baby opens it up and sits on it, bites it, whatever it will be broken. And that's why we buy board books so they will hold up to rough play. Very disappointing. I looked at them in a store and they were this way too. I don't think a better binding is available in the board books.I give the story 5 stars and the binding 1.
I'm a big fan of the Bright & Early Board Books. This series takes familiar childhood favorites and miniaturizes it to a version that is friendly to toddlers in both physical size and content. This book goes over prepositions. The artwork is clean and simple but still delightful.This book is great for any toddler/infant library and given the size, it's great for on-the-go.

Such a cute book. I bought this to replace the original ripped apart (well loved) book. I didn't realize it was a board book (I didn't pay attention, it was my fault) but I love it just the same. My youngest adores the book.
Great rhythm, pictures, & humor - so glad to have found it in hardcover for new granddaughter! All my kids loved it & we used the last phrase as a metaphor for many of our own adventures &/or misadventures!
Glad that there are Berenstain Bear board books so I can start my son on the series early. It is an abridged version, so don't expect tons of pages. Great quality and size.
Nice, short book with few words. Basically all of the words are locations (inside, on, outside, upside down, rightside up), so it's pretty fast-paced for a little one who doesn't understand those concepts yet. Good tool to learn though?
