I am kind of at a 3rd year level of Russian. Have not really read all the stories, but I like editions like these since we are already familiar with many of the stories and might even own an English/French edition. Yes, I need to use a dictionary, but that is alright. Of course, I like best the ones that include English text right after one or two paragraphs but even at an advanced age I like fairy tales over very business like texts for reading.

This is a beautifully illustrated large print book containing descriptive pictures.This book is written in Russian script and offers the reader some of Russia's favorite fairy tales. This book would be a wonderful beginners addition to those who are learning Russian and need practice in decoding and reading Russian as a second language.

Confusing illustrations. Not a good quality.

Harriet lives on the Upper East Side, the only child of an affluent couple; they have a cook, they send Harriet to a private school, and they employ a nanny of sorts in the form of Miss Golly, an acerbic woman of sharp intelligence who is given to unexpected quotes.Harriet is a self-regimented child who likes the stability of repetition. Her room must be precisely so. She always takes tomato sandwiches to school for lunch. She always has cake and milk when she returns from school in the afternoon. She then goes out to spy on a number of people—a rich woman, an Italian family, a cat-crazy man, and a married couple who consider themselves perfect. Harriet writes about them in her notebook … but she also writes about her classmates and her best friends, and the brutal honesty of her thoughts causes five shades of hell when her notebook falls into their hands.When the world changes around her in unexpected ways, Harriet finds herself unable to cope. In order to bring herself back into focus, she must learn to take responsibility for her actions, to show a little tact, and to be emotionally as well as factually honest. Harriet is a girl who often dresses like a boy and who behaves in ways that seem boyish; she must, therefore be lesbian. Her friend Sport is a boy who seems somewhat weak; he must, therefore, be gay. And then there is this business about the boy who always purple socks. Everyone knows that purple is a color associated with gays and lesbians. Well … if you are determined to read a “homosexual agenda” into absolutely everything, I suppose you can scratch one out of this. But I’ll think you’re crazy and so will most other people.Now and then I like to go back to some of the books I read when I was a child. There are the Brains Benton mystery series, and the Oz books, and the whole Hardy Boys/Tom Swift/Nancy Drew thing. And they are all fun and enjoyable in their ways. But to say it flatly, HARRIET THE SPY isn’t just a children’s book suitable for nostalgia; it is one of the best books I’ve read of any type. Simple as that. The 50th Anniversary Edition, available in both print and Kindle, comes complete with the original illustrations by Fitzhugh and a dozen or so essays by authors who comment on the impact the book had on them. You can read a book several times as a kid and come back to it as an adult and have it become something completely different. I suspect this is the case for most people with "Harriet the Spy".For me, as a kid, Harriet was so awesome. She was cool, she was a ne'or do well, she didn't give a flip about the adults, and if she did, she did it because of her own timing. She had a hard time with her friends, of course, but she blazed right past that and it was amazing! What more could you get out of a kids book? I carried a spy book with me for the longest time, and I would make mental observations about the world and people around me.As an adult reading this book, I found myself crying a couple times, because there's this seething background full of classism, ageism, sexism, and and all the in-betweens if you're looking at it with an open eye. The problem with judging this book as a kid and judging it as an adult is that a kid instinctively understands that the things Harriet does (pinching, punching, all that) is in reaction to bullying, not an instigator of it. A child will realize, without even realizing it, that Harriet is reacting to the world rather than creating it (ironic considering her desire to be a writer). A child will feel that injustice and cheer for Harriet, when, by the end, she realizes that there are people other than her out there and she needs to think about them. She doesn't change her fundamentals, but she does realize that words can hurt people, and that her friends can accept her for who she is, rather than who she should be.Adults who read this now, and say that this is a bad influence on kids, miss a key point. They're well-meant in wanting to discourage children from reading it because they think it'll discourage bullying. But it's not. Harriet the Spy cannot be read as an adult and judged by an adult because the kids reading it are thinking from a completely different angle. Harriet is eleven years old and it's impossible to give an adult's mindset and motives because she simply doesn't have them yet. And it's good. She's learning what it means to do something and the consequences of the action. Is she learning kindness or is she learning caution? It's too early to tell. But as any child can tell, Harriet is changing and it's a wonderful thing because what's worse than having things go terribly wrong in your young life and knowing nothing will ever change?

I've never seen my daughter react like this to a book, but she was crazy about Harriet the Spy. She would listen for as long as I was willing to read, and we're now on to the sequels. I like it because it's real literature and doesn't talk down to kids at all. There's challenging vocabulary, and some fairly intense emotional scenes. I enjoyed reading it as much as my daughter, and we're now taking off on a journey through the classics. What a great beginning!

I didn't realize what an impact this book had on my life. I think this book is responsible for my love of writing as I started keeping a journal when I was 11. When I re-read it, I found it to be so much more then a girl who spied on people and kept notes. It is about the struggles of a writer, who has to overcome rejection, abandonment, and self doubt. I thought Harriet was a well formed character, and her world is very interesting. If you are a writer, read it. If you have a child, I would strongly recommend it.

Favorite book as a young girl. Ordered a copy for my daughter age 8. She loved it as well. Some of the terms are outdated, so worked best as a read allowed so that I could explain some old fashioned words and ideas.

Just like the subtitle implies this book traces the beginnings of the formation of a gay identity in the LGBT community and the various twists and turns that it took leading up to the Stonewall Uprising. The author makes the point that the Gay rights movement did not begin with Stonewall but actually began with the creation of a gay identity starting to coalesce in the beginning of the 20th century. The author looks at how event like the 2nd world war brought gay men and lesbians together in urban areas and the realization that they were not alone but that there was a sizable group of people like them. The earliest groups like the Mattachine Society and the Daughter of Bilitis were small but influential groups in that they helped begin the discussion of gay rights the fight agains discrimination and whether LGBT's should take a passive approach to larger society hoping for acceptance or if they should actively fight for their rights. The author argues that while these groups were small and often fragmented and in no way could be called a mass movement their importance lies in the fact that they were the first ones to raise these questions and have a public discussion on them and by doing this raised awareness in the LGBT community and spurred the formation of a common identity. I found this book very interesting especially in how the gay rights movement had some of the same issues and challenges that the Civil rights movement faced and the women's rights movements had and how all of these movements would kind of coalesce in the 60's The discussion of the creation of a Gay identity was informative and I would have liked to seen more on that. the author makes several suggestions in the afterwards on books that have been written since his that could be helpful on this topic. Like any good academic history text it raises just as many questions as it answers and I think that this is one of the books that any now interested in Queer studies and women's rights should read. Many other books have been written since this one on various topics raised in this book but this is one of the first ones to bring several of these historic problems up and set the stage for later books.

This book shows how in times of great threat (e.g the cold war and nuclear war) weaker men turn on easy domestic targets rather than creating real defence. Homosexuals have always been a very small minority and were an easy target. Edmond Burke (during the social stress of the French Revolution and subsequent war) talks about how men not bonded to a clear national indentity or who lack patriotism to a national identity form factions or religious/social groups out of fear and greed. Weaker men often use these groups at times of social stress to gain financially or allieviate their fears by attacking a weaker minority group. The book shows how homosexuals where misused in pseudo class wars post WWII. These circumstances have reappeared in different forms at the time of the same sex marriage debates. Firstly the psychological elimination of homosexuals by wording it "same sex" not "homo sexual" marriage. This takes the homosexual out of the debate and allows the debate to be dominated by political opportunists, heterosexuals or rather bi-sexuals. This type of arguement was part of the 1950's attack on homosexuals. That bisexuality was more normal and that bisexuality was then used to create heterosexual "norms". The book clearly shows how some public servants entrusted with the civil duty of care to all citizens misused power. How they interacted with groups outside the public service to enhance the effect of their own hatred. To keep things in persective better citizens were creating the USA's great defence system, space program and rebuilding a world shattered by WWII while creating defence against a new military threat which threatened even more lives. I also read " And they were wonderful teachers" Florida's purge of gay and lesbian teachers. This shows how corrupted men used the gay scare to attack women with intrusive questions about their sexual lives. Will these types of attack increase during the same sex marraiage debates. These questions show no care for women, lesbians or homosexuals. This type of attack on economically and political free woman has been common in history. President George Washington in "Rules of civilty and decent conduct" advises us to ignore those who bring inappropriate public attention to private matters. He cautions not to publically engage verbally or any other way in such matters

There were a few tomes about great historical figures who happened to be gay, and Jonathan Katz's landmark "Gay American History," but virtually nothing about the gay men and women after World War II who fought amazing hostility, made countless strategic errors, suffered profound personal losses, and still managed to organize a movement that changed the way we all view individual rights in a civil society. Even publishing the first edition in 1983 was an act of courage.Today gay history is a thriving discipline, and the story has been told countless times, often more engagingly. For general readers, I recommend John Loughery's "The Other Side of Silence" and Lilian Faderman's "Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers." But for students and scholars, this is a model of historical research and an inspiration.

John D'emilio's book clearly make the point about the minority status of the homosexual in America. The start of the first organizations to promote a homosexual presents, with their naive belief that they would be excepted, to the more militant efforts in the early sixties. D'emilio has documented carefully the many events of importants that led up the the stonewall riot. Making it clear that the fight didn't begin at stonewall, but many years before. He talks in detail about the different organizations that started, and how they developed and changed as the struggle continued. D'emilio did his homework on this one without question. If you were ever curious about the events that started the gay revolution this is a must read.

Was looking forward to reading this book sounded like a good story, but it was more about the sex (not believable at all) and not the wrong that was done to the couple and how that got back at the one that wronged them.

Just a real short story and it’s not really a story! The book is just about them having sex constantly, with no story at all. It could have been so much better with a little more imagination on Madison’s part. Wouldn’t recommend this as a good read. Happy reading!

Steamy a quick read. Another hot hit from this author. She is the queen of hot and sexy reads, her novellas practically set my kindle on fire. Brooks is determined to get his wife back. They were separated through miscommunications and lies but he wants her back now. They both were lied to by her father in order to keep them separate. Leanne doesn’t know the lies her father told and is astonished to see Brooks a year later while out on a date. He takes them back to the beach house they shared while married and reconnect. They both find out that they still love each other and the separation only made them love each other more. I highly recommend this author and all of her books!

3.5 StarsThis book was short, sexy, sweet and to the point!Since I've been reading a lot of romantic suspense lately, I was looking for something short with a sexy, possessive alpha. I totally found that with Taking Back His Bride. Just be warned there is no substance to this book other than a man obsessed with getting back his wife and a whole lot of dirt. But it was just what I needed at the time.Because Brooks has been overseas on a drilling rig he could do nothing when he got the news that his beautiful wife, Leanna, divorced him. After a year goes by and Brooks had made a fortune, he comes back for his wife. Of course when he finds her, and all is revealed, and much manipulation and deceit are the culprits. I won't give details because like I said, this book is a super quick read. But I will say that while this book contains a dirty talking, possessive alpha, I thought Brooks was so sweet too.I do wish we got to see Leanna and Brooks when they met and married instead of jumping three years but still, a good book.This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)

Good grief Madison your books can set a building on fire. You have such a dirty mind and I love it. It intrigues me how hot your heroes are yet they displace a sweetness that is so gentle towards the heroines. Brooks was no different although he was smoking hot he was not ashamed to constantly tell and show Leanna how much he loved her. There is always something hot about a man who shows is softer side. I liked that in this story there wasn’t that annoying back and forth game playing that takes place in so many romance books. Yea Brooks and Leanna. I will never tire of your books so keep them coming.

Definitely wish the storylines to both Brooks and Leanna were fleshed out more. Maybe wait out a little more on their reunion and build the suspense to make it that much sweeter. Also her dad as the villain could've been more distracting for them than it actually was. Might be weird to want a bigger villain plotline or twist, but I think it would've added that something extra that the story needs. Still a fun treat to read!

This is a very short story with lots of steam with a little bit of story intermixed. Brooks is out on the oil rigs that he works on when he gets divorce papers from his wife Leanna. Thinking she has found someone else, he finishes his job and throws himself into his work. When his job is over and he comes back to the mainland, he sees Leanna and learns that they both have been lied to by her father who never wanted her to marry him anyway. This book is mostly about these two getting back together and making up for lost time. Would have liked more story behind the deception and more of what the two of them did during that time apart. Angst and hot sex with some story thrown in - this could have been so much better with more of the plot thrown in to let the readers know how these two survived and her father getting his comeuppance. But it was enjoyable and good way to pass an afternoon.

Taking Back His Bride was entertaining. Madison Faye gives you a sweet and sexy story about a husband and wife who embark on a second chance at romance. Brooks is a blue collar type of guy. Leanna comes from money. Despite their differences, they love each other or did until someone put a wedge between them. Brooks is working hard to win back the heart of Leanna. Will they get their second chance at happiness? This book was short, steamy, intriguing and fun. It's a must read for romance lovers.
