I normally don't write reviews because I'm not particularly good at doing so. In this case, however, I so thoroughly enjoyed this book that I'm making the attempt in the hopes of encouraging others to read it. The book is charming, has a bit of mystery to it plus a ghostly presence, and it's like life itself---there are things that will make you happy and things that will make you a bit sad because the characters become real to you. The story is a bit of a tapestry in that it weaves together various threads of the stories of various people's lives to create a beautiful "garment." I did feel the book wrapping itself around me and felt I could "wear" the story because it made me see how people and things in my own life form a pattern, too. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates gentle stories with an ultimate happy ending. The theme is love for others, animals, and yourself; and I'd like to share that feeling with other readers. I do hope this author will continue writing and providing such wonderful books to read.

In searching for his keepsake, he finds other lost things. He catalogues them carefully in hopes of reuniting them with their owners. They inspire him to write stories.Laura, Anthony's housekeeper of several years, is lost herself after a painful divorce. When she unexpectedly inherits Anthony's home, she also inherits his lost things (with Anthony's request to try to find their owners), his gardener, Freddy, and his special neighbor Sunshine, a Downs syndrome teenager with special gifts of intuition and extrasensory perception.Threaded skillfully into the narrative with effective use of flashback is the story of Eunice, who met the love of her life—Bomber—on the same day Anthony's fiancée was killed. Eunice and Bomber's own heartwarming story leads inexorably to a satisfying intersection with Laura and her lost things.I came to love each of these deliciously quirky characters and was loathe to leave them when the book ended.
Anthony Peardew leads a quiet life collecting and cataloging bits and pieces of lost things. Each is carefully tagged with a description of the item and the details of where and when Anthony found it. Most of the found items are quirky personal items, where value is personal not monetary. All lives have loss- some great and some small- some tangible and some intangible. Our characters and the stories are woven together with the lost and found of life. There are many small stories and two main stories. Ruth Hogan does an excellent job of weaving them together despite shifting time lines, until we reach a final intersection of the two main stories. I liked the people and the stories. I liked the gentle touch of our author as she told the stories. There are supernatural aspects and romantic touches that worked with the novel. This book was kind and gentle, romantic and loving, but not sappy.

This is one of those books where the author seamlessly brings together two stories and leaves you wondering at the end, how on earth did she make that happen? I didn’t want the book to end but, of course, I wanted to find out just how it was going to end.All so very British and fun. There is Bomber, a book publisher, and his rescue pup, who lives a charmed life, regular visits from his spry parents who he adores. His insanely materialistic wannabe author sister Pauline, and close as can be, whimsical friend Eunice who is protective and caring, they work together and practically read each other’s minds.​Laura, ever the good-mannered one, but can’t seem to put her needs first, divorced from a not even worth mentioning guy, is pretty much down in the dumps and now finds her way into the beautiful home of Anthony, a talented writer who lost the love of his life, and lives quietly amongst his things.Music that you can feel, romantic notions, the kindness of neighbors, the revelation of lost things, love lost, and love found, understanding, friendship, second chances, keeping promises, moonlit gardens, belief in an otherworldly outlook, and objects that tell stories that you must listen to because they will find their way back, and their keepers just might too.
From the very first lines of the story, you're drawn into the wonderful world that Mrs. Hogan has crafted. One of my favorite things about the story is seeing the puzzle pieces of each character's life fitted together to form an intricate narrative. We meet Anthony Peardew, a man who lost his love many years ago. In order to keep from drowning in his sorrow, he begins collecting the random trinkets that seem to fall into his path: a single puzzle piece, a cookie tin of ashes, a daisy hair bauble. Anthony's curious trove is lovingly cared for, each piece is catalogued with the place, date, and time of discovery and added to his collection- with the intent that he might someday return the pieces to their rightful owner. Anthony passes, and he leaves his collection to his housekeeper, Laura. Anthony's home, Padua, has become a place of respite following her divorce; we see Laura begin to live again, and we meet a wonderful cast of supporting characters.Above all, this is a love story, but not just between significant others. It's a story of learning to love yourself, imperfections and all. It's about creating a life worth living and not settling for the mundane. There's a little bit of the supernatural thrown in- just enough to give the story that little something extra.
I really enjoyed the first half of this book and then I thought it got kind of silly when a ghost appeared. After a predictable ending I was fairly disappointed.

This is a different take on a Jewish Family during WWII. They were in the Warsaw Ghetto and managed to escape. The daughter at only 3 yrs. old;along with her mother are separated from the father and taken to a safe house. They have a cover story for the mother, but not the little girl. She is hidden in a huge oven during the day and sleeps with her mother at night. The story is told by 3 separate people. A very interesting way to tell this story. A very sad life for a very young child.
This book tells how a Jewish family from Poland managed to escape during the war and the many hardships they endured.
I have done a great deal of reading on the Holocaust. This was from a different perspective altogether. The author had me spellbound and I found it difficult to put aside and rejoin my family activities. This was an historical novel, but I found it accurate and well written. I will choose to read more by this author

Because if you left them forgotten, and not take care of them, even they are now only scars and nothing more, nothing good becomes from it. This book is a very good example why we all have to face ourselves and our past if we want to have a future.

After hearing Mr. Rogers speak at our church, I bought his book for my wife. I have reviewed the book and found it extremely compelling, in that it chronicles a man's struggle with faith in a loving God through incredible immense tragedy.Mr. Rogers lost his entire family in one horrible stormy night while driving home from of all things, a wonderfully happy celebration - a wedding. This book tells the story of that tragedy and Mr. Roger's reaction to it. Rather than react with a raised fist and a "curse God and die" mentality, Mr. Rogers finds a solid faith in the very center of supreme tragedy.This is a heartbreaking story, and yet conversely; it is an uplifting story. The loss experienced is overwhelming, incalcuable, yet; the faithfulness of Mr. Roger's to God in the midst of tragedy is also overwhelming. I was moved to sobbing tears by this story, but was also moved to tears by the expression of faith in the midst of horrific circumstances.The Bible does not promise a life of luxury and problem-free living in return for faith in the Lord. Actually, the Bible states that we will have problems in this life and that we are to remain faithful to the Lord even in the midst of disaster. That is the central message of this book. I think it is a hard message for Christians, for tv evangelists (for years) have promised a prosperity-filled life for those that follow the Lord. The prosperity gospel is a false gospel. Did Jesus's disciples become rich and lead an easy life to heaven? Of course not, and likewise, neither should we expect anything different.As a person of faith, you WILL experience difficult, perhaps even disasterous times (such as described in this book). Having the example of Robert Rogers and his reaction to having all that was important to him taken away in one single moment, is an object lesson for us all. Faith is what God requires of us in ALL circumstances, and this book clearly demonstrates a faith that brings Mr. Rogers through the storm all the way to the other side.This is a remarkable story that all Christians and persons of faith need to consider, for life will not always go according to plan. When our lives fall apart, will our faith be strong enough to hold our lives together? This book shows one man's reaction to that question. I had heard of this book last year, and wanted to read it, especially after seeing Robert on CNN. I was immediately captivated by the faith that flowed through this man. Yet, I put off reading the book. Perhaps because it forces one to think about the unthinkable. Recently, however, I have had so many people near me dealing with such great sorrows. I felt it was a time for me to look at this book for answers. It arrived today and I read it this afternoon. It is a good size book. I am just a fast reader. I am so grateful for Robert Rogers and his willingness to share his life with us. The book is a hard read, but I think a "must read". Not only is it a story of how God met a grief beyond words, with grace beyond words... it is the story of an incredible family, a loving, godly, giving family. It is not only a story of facing death, it is a story of how to live. It creates in one a deep commitment to love faithfully those who walk through this world with us. Especially our families. The clarion call throughout the book is to live a life without regret. My life truly had been changed, in ways that I hope will matter in this life and the life to come.
I read this book and it brought tears to my eyes. Especially knowing it was true and I correspond with Mr. Rogers thru his ministry. To see how he struggled but ultimately kept his faith was an awesome testimony to what God does and can do in our lives. The Lord has blessed him with another family and he continues to tell his story throughout the land. May God continue to bless Robert and his family. I recommend this book to anyone who is suffering a loss, whether it be a person or one's hope in God.

This was such an inspiring recount of a tragedy that was used to glorify God. I found the pattern of grief to be very authentic. The display of faith was a great tribute to the endless grace and love of Jesus.
I bought this book after hearing an interview on Focus on the Family with Robert Rogers. I was drawn to his story after hearing about this man's faith. His voice had an undescribable peace that I've never heard before. His story is truely amazing and I was blessed to hear about the faithfullness of God in times of trouble. I also currently work with a lot of people who have recently experienced the death of a loved one and it was insightful for me to get a deeper understanding of their grief.I highly recommend this book for anyone dealing with loss or trying to empathize better with those who have been touched by death.
I like true stories, even sad ones, but normally do not read personal stories written by a second person (the "with..." books) because I am not sure how much real personality of the author is coming in. Stan Finger is a good writer and this, for the most part, was well done. It was very sad and may be too much to take for those with small children. However, it does a good job of telling over and over until we believe it that God is a refuge from any storm and provides comfort from any sorrow. Actually I think we would have to experience it (God forbid) to really understand this the way Mr. Rogers finally did. I would give this book at least four stars except for the ending. I was all primed to hear a story of what happened once Rogers devoted himself to God and began a ministry. This part was drastically abbreviated, as though they had spent enough time, and wanted to bring it to a close. I guess that story, with his new wife Inga, is still unfolding and may become another book. A book well worth reading, packed full of appropriate Bible quotes, and just short of being as inspiring, as it could have been.

NATURAL DISASTERS, published by DK in 2006, offers a fascinating if sometimes scary look at the destructive forces mother nature has at her beck and call. While the book is intended for readers 9-12 years old, older readers will also find NATURAL DISASTERS of interest.After brief sections on our restless earth, author Claire Watts discusses tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides/avalanches, hurricanes/tornadoes, floods, droughts, fires, climate changes, unnatural disasters, diseases/epidemics, and future disasters. Each topic gets at least a two-page spread with basic information on that topic and six-eight b&w and/or color photographs, maps or diagrams showing, for example, what an avalanche in action looks like and its aftermath. Some topics rate additional pages. The tsunami section, for instance, runs to 12 pages. The book also includes an FAQ section, glossary and useful websites but, curiously, no bibliography.The information and illustrations are appropriate for the intended age level. I loved everything about this book. Best thriller/drama/mystery I’ve read in awhile! I was addicted... reading it nonstop. Character development was spot on and I felt like I was inside their heads. Even though I felt like I knew everything, I was still hit with twists. Amazing.
2 1/2 âï¸â€˜sWhile this book did have me flipping pages at first, I found the plot to be completely implausible and the detective to be a bumbling oaf. All of the characters were totally unlikable leaving no one to root for. There was a bit of language throughout, but at times its use was cringe worthy. The twist at the end was suppose to leave doubt, but, unfortunately, it just didn’t work the way it should have. Dr. Michael Baylor was a successful psychotherapist, especially when it came to his female patients. However, he is now dead and the detective in charge of the case has three potential suspects, Flora, Lucinda and Greer, Detective Gregory Flath certainly has his work cut out for him.Each woman has a different story. Lucinda is trying to deal with childhood trauma. Greer is a career-driven woman who suddenly is desperate for a child, and is trying to work out the hows and whys. Then there is Flora, who started seeing Dr. Baylor for marriage counseling along with her husband Young.As far as Flora is concerned, she began an affair with Dr. Baylor and they have been intimate for two years. As much as Flora might be in love with him, she is definitely just as obsessed. This is even to the point of resenting Dr. Baylor's time with his female patients.Each woman, as things slowly reveal, is caught up in secrets and lies, and thus presenting a motive. Detective Flath is forced to question each of them at length, especially since doctor-patient privilege stands even after Dr. Baylor's death.Confidential is delivered in knife-sharp precision in the past and present. Presently, the story is told from the detective's point of view. As far as the past is concerned, each woman's story is relayed. It becomes rather easy to see why these women need a therapist. To a large degree, each one of them is unraveled, falling apart at various times for various reasons.There is not a single likeable character in this story! Yet, it is compelling from page one. Along with the detective, the job of the reader is to ascertain which of the woman is responsible for the murder of Dr. Baylor. Read well. Read carefully, as there are a lot of clues along the way.What a book! I could not put it down, except for when my body demanded sleep. Otherwise, this would have been a one-sitting read. I enjoyed the writing style of Ellie Monago. I am certain that her real-life job as a therapist went a long way when it came to getting into the minds of Flora, Lucinda and Greer, all the while seeing how manipulative Dr. Baylor actually was.I definitely found a new favorite author! So much so that I was forced to put aside what I had planned next to read in order to read her previous novel, Neighborly, which was equally engaging.
