This is a book you will struggle to put down!When talking with a friend, we were trying to decide which couple was our favorite. I couldn’t choose. I absolutely love PJ and Dylan. The way they both try to fight their attraction until it can’t possibly be ignored then dive all the way in kept me turning page after page. Their love ran deep, but their worries and fears made it heartbreaking at times. The forbidden aspect of their story kept me on edge with the will they, won’t they get caught, and I loved every bit of it!And Jack and Danielle were just as engaging! They both had their own personal struggles to overcome. Watching them heal together and slowly accept the possibilities between them was the best slow burn! I absolutely adore them both individually and wanted them to find the happiness they deserve, especially after everything they had been through. Watching them find that happiness together? So perfect!The passion in this book is off the charts! Be prepared for melting Kindles, because when the slow burn ignites, it is explosive! However, it is also filled with tender moments and so much love. Stephanie brought all the feels with this book. Not only do we get the emotions of these couples, we also have the love of family and the need to be accepted by those you love and a theme of self acceptance and moving on. Seriously, this book is everything!If you’ve been reading Stephanie’s work, you will absolutely love checking back in with these characters and seeing appearances from characters you know and love. There’s nothing better than to be back with my tribe. My people. These characters are exactly that after all we’ve been through since Only You and After You. They’re my friends. Think Twice can easily be read as a standalone. For me it was extra special since I’ve been with them from the beginning. I’ve read the two short stories Falling and Hidden so I was very excited to get more and a deeper look into these wonderful characters.In Think Twice the reader gets four POV. Jack and his younger sister by eight years PJ, his best friend Dylan and Danielle who’s Jack physical therapist. Also Jack and PJ’s parents have a huge part in the story making my Nick Garcia heart very happy. What’s not to love about Think Twice. I got my romance fix satiated thanks to the author Stephanie Rose and her fabulous storytelling. She knows exactly what I need and crave in romance and I got the delicious tingles thanks to Jack, Dylan and Nick. There’s a little forbidden/age gap theme going on which I thoroughly enjoyed. Ticking all my boxes. Those two epilogues were pretty damn amazing. Leaving me on a high.The Second Chances series and Think Twice captures topics such as family, friendships and love to perfection. Maybe it’s because I’ve been there from book 1 but I want this series to go on forever. The way the author Stephanie Rose writes and executes storylines in this universe I know there’s a possibility for more and I couldn’t be happier.
I have only one question --- why the hell it is the first time I read a Stephanie Rose book? This woman’s writing if freakin’ FLAWLESS, people! Because of that, I’ve embraced every moment I got to spend with it. I flew through the pages and enjoyed every little moment. This story is full of emotions, with a touch of angst. It’s the most terrific mixture I’ve ever tasted.Think Twice is unworldly. It’s a real masterpiece. What I absolutely enjoyed was the aspect of the four POV. It’s really hard to find a book with more than two POVs, so I’ve been really looking forward to read this one. And wow, I’m impressed! Four incredible voices to lead me through the most wonderful journey I’ve ever had.PJ & Dylan – I fell for them. Fast and hard. Their love is forbidden and the way they fought for each other... Stick is the story of Stark McClellan and his older brother Bosten. The boys are growing up in a harsh, cold home in rural Washington state. Their parents are abusive and cruel. Stark, nicknamed "Stick", was born without an ear, and he's been teased about his missing ear his whole life. Bosten is his only defender, and their neighbor Emily is Stick's only friend. Bosten is also gay, which Stick only learns when he catches Bosten and his friend Paul together. That doesn't matter to Stick, who loves his brother, but it matters a lot to his rigid parents. (The historical setting of this book is never specified, but based on the music, drugs, and cars mentioned, I would assume the setting is 1970s). The boys have an ally in their Aunt Dahlia, but she lives in distant Southern California. When Bosten finally runs away after an epic fight with their father, Stick takes their father's car and runs after him.This is a hard book to read, primarily due to the horrific abuse that the two main characters endure at the hands of their parents. But as usual with Andrew Smith's books, the main characters are vibrant and lovable. My major criticism has to do with the plot--the second half of the story felt rushed and entirely too dependent on lucky chance. Not to mention, it strained my credulity that the same controlling parents who had rules about hair length, underwear, and what could or could not be said to a neighbor were just going to let Stark get away with taking his father's car and moving in with Aunt Dahlia. Sorry, but I really wasn't buying that one bit.
This book was banned from the reading shelf at a public school near Portland, Oregon. I'm a former teacher and I don't understand why. This book suddenly made me understand what some of my childhood friends had gone through living in disfunctional homes. No one knows the horrors that go on in other people's homes. But, it's time we start those discussions and it's also time start paying attention to those who are suffering in the silence of their personal hells. It really is time to do something to stop the circle of childhood abuse. It's past time for the village to start caring for all our children. Look around, it's there. This book is a fantastic starting point for that discussion. It broke my heart to now know.
This book was so good, I was doing my Lamaze breathing during some parts because they were exquisitely written, yet incredibly painful and dark.This book will haunt me for a long time, but that's okay because I've never read anything quite like it. The characters are so well-formed, my heart so invested in their actions, I so desperately wanted to meet them and hug or stab them, accordingly.Stark's devotion to his brother and his determination to navigate through the hell of his life, while at the same time hating himself so intently, made my heart feel like an anchor while I read. I wanted Stark to be saved. I wanted him to thrive. I wanted him to love.This is a tale of the ugliest and most beautiful moments in life wrapped up in one 13 year old boy, and it's incredible.Everyone should read this book, it's life-altering.
Some books bitchslap you with sentimentality, some punch you in the boobs with longing and heartbreak, some books feel like a good one-night stand that leaves you with the disgusting aftertaste of regret, self-loathing and the fear of herpes... okay, I think I'm getting sidetracked now... and some books hurt you in places you didn't know could hurt while lying in bed reading by yourself.The blurb is pretty upfront, and true enough, this was not an easy read. I really thought I was going to DNF this at 15%. I've NEVER DNF-ed a book just for being too much. And I've read my share of too much. In truth, what Stick and Bosten went through, the abuse and the violence that went on inside and outside that house, usually puts me off. Because more often than not, I feel like I'm being emotionally manipulated into crying (I'm looking at you, Reason to Breathe). But placing this in the context of a deformed thirteen year old boy dealing with the complexity of puberty and the terrifying changes that comes with it, layered with the simplicity of his relationship with his brother... It worked.The first half of Stick portrayed the lives of the McClellan brothers in Point No Point, Washington through the eyes of Stark "Stick" McClellan and his brother Bosten. Stick has one ear, one best friend (Emily) and a lot of abuse thrown his way. His brother, Bosten keep the wolves in school at bay but when they're home, there's no one between them, their parents and St. Fillan's Room. Their father may have beaten them into believing they are less than who they are, that this was the norm in every household, but they still got each other.The second half deals with the aftermath of Bosten running away from home after their father found out that he's gay. Stick embarks on a lonesome roadtrip as he tracks his brother back to California, the place where they learned that kindness and love didn't come with rules and punishments through their Aunt Dahlia.I may have to admit into liking the first half better than the last despite the persistent twig branch I had in my eye while reading through it. I felt the narrative flowed, tension was evenly spaced and Stick's sexual awakening provided simultaneous charm and entertainment reminiscent of Ryan Dean in Winger. I always get a massive feels erection with stories reflecting relationships with brothers. Romantic and erotic relationships feel very pedestrian and easy but translating the depth and texture of that bond between brothers while displaying each as a person distinct from the other? It takes a very tempered hand to get that right, I feel.Not to sell this one short on the romance because I found his and Emily's moments delightful in their innocence, warming the corners of my heart that have been frozen by their horrible parents. That particular exchange they have when Stick tells her what goes on in his house? Like getting shanked right in the aorta.The second half wasn't bad but with Bosten missing from the picture, I felt the story lost a bit of its balance. Some scenes felt too expository for me with some characters not serving any purpose in the bigger picture that was The Evolution of Stick to Stark McClellan (I don't get the point of April, for instance). There were good, intense moments that had me praying for certain things NOT to happen (my imagination can go to the dark and f***ed up place in a certain setting) and one moment when I felt the tear-pushing just got too obvious Stick singing himself happy birthday while alone in the car? Oh come on, you're above that pay-grade Andrew Smith. Anywhere else I would've cried foul, but this time I'm just chalking it up as a slip.The last 25% felt this side of rushed and for something as gritty as the first half of this book. The heavy handedness on pounding the recurring theme things happening and things changing started as an annoying paper cut that eventually grew to a mammoth bleeding gash on the face. There came a point it became impossible to ignore anymore.These were small issues I had with the book, but what cost this book my esteem was the idea of Aunt Dahlia coming across too Poppins-esque, I think I was bothered by that, more than her turning up out of nowhere in their lives after having suffered so much. I like the imperfect and uneven edges in my books, the splinters make them more acceptable as realistic fiction. Aunt Dahlia just felt too smooth and California was just too much of a perfect yang to Washington's yin.Stick is a tough book, yes, but I find myself drawn to these kinds of stories, pushing my boundaries and expanding my horizons as a reader. I'm going to step over my boundaries and aggressively push this to anyone who has read and liked or disliked Reason to Breathe.They drive different messages across but they intersect at certain points. And in those points, this is the book that that one aspires to, but will never be.

WOW! I've seen a LOT of bud photos, but these simply take my breath away. And so much helpful information without being overwhelming. This guy has a great eye and a super sense of humor. I love this book!

Their looks, smells, feels, and potency are artistically captured in pages of breathtaking photos and delightful language. For example, Lemon Kush is "mild in flavor, but full of daytime creativity" and Blue Magoo has a "creamy smoothness – sweet, fruity, classic. A strain full of reward." No technical language to confuse a reader here. Rather, hints about what a user can expect to experience with each strain. That's a fullness of reward for sure!

Professor Sinason received a BS in engineering from the University of Illinois, a BS in History from Northern Illinois University, a BBA and MAcc in accounting from the University of North Florida, and a PhD in accounting from Florida State University. He has certifications as a certified public accountant, a certified internal auditor, a certified financial services auditor, and a certified fraud examiner. He also has certification in risk management assurance. Professor Sinason has written more than 50 articles, mostly in the areas of assurance services, fraud prevention and detection, and auditor liability.
Professor Sinason has taught in the areas of accounting information systems, auditing and assurance services, and financial accounting. He has received teaching awards at each of the universities where he has taught including the 2002–2003 Department of Accountancy and Northern Illinois University Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Although there is a lot of information than one may need, ample examples are given to portray the different concepts in this book. The end-of-chapter questions also help reinforce the concepts you've read, but you may need to get the answers from your professor. If you are in undergrad and are in need of an audit book for the upcoming semester, I recommend this book! I definitely would not have been able to get an A in my audit class without it!

He later claimed that the marriage to Arthur was not consummated and could be annulled allowing him to wed the fetching Anne Boleyn. We all know the story of how he married Anne and later had her beheaded. Henry married six times and beheaded Anne and his fifth wife Katherine Howard. The story of Henry and his wives has been told countless times in print and on the big screen. However, much less is given play on the men who advised Henry during his long reign. Among the greatest of these advisorsa. Cardinal Wolsey- A longtime advisor of whom Henry became furious at due to the prelate's opposition to his marriage to Anne Boleyn and his support of Catherine of Aragon and the Roman Catholic faith. He died before he could be tried for treason.b. Sir Thomas More was a friend of Henry from their early years and became Lord Chancellor of the Realm. He is the author of The Utopia and was a staunch defender of the Roman Catholic religion. He was excecuted on the orders of Henry VIII for not supporting the king's marriage to Anne Boleync.Thomas Cromwell was Henry's utility infielder of doing his work. He suppressed the monasteries adding millions of revenue to Henry's treasury. He initially supported Anne Boleyn and then turned against her. Henry was furious when he wed Anne of Cleves who was supported by Cromwell. Cromwell was an evangelical Christian while Henry still loved the rites and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. He was accused of treason and beheadedd. Henry Brandon Duke of Sussex married Henry's sister Mary. He was a soldier and diplomat and loved wine, women and song as did Henry,. He died n his bed Henry VIII was a spoiled, lascvicious , egocentric dictator who is the cruelest tyrant in British history. An athletic young man he was handsome and loved tennis, hunting, hawking and chasing women. He became obesee, paranoid and was at all times fickle. He often failed in military campaigns against his arch rivals King Francis I of France and Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor. He was intelligent and loved music and studying theology and science. I have read most of Dr. Tracy Borman's books on the Tudor family. She is a brilliant scholar and her books are a must for anoyone wanting to learn more about the colorful and crucial Tudor Age in British history. Well recommended!

The blurb was very promising, but the book did not meet all my expectations. It was a pleasant read, it’s the Tudors after all, but I had hoped for a more comprehensive work.The focus is indeed on the men surrounding Henry, an approach that I found very intriguing. Though interesting and informative, I disliked the author's at times very subjective, strongly expressed or oversimplified conclusions.I prefer more historical background information and nuance in a biography as well as a better clarification of the sources used, with their bias and the agenda of the narrator always clearly kept in mind. The author often quotes from the Spanish Chronicle, which I didn’t much care for since it is considered a rather unreliable source, feeling more like a gossip mag at times. Occasionally, she used sweeping statements herself, without giving a source or the reasoning behind her conclusion.I also feel that the author made far too light of Henry VIII’s religious scruples and his genuine and legitimate concern regarding the importance of an heir for his dynasty and the benefits of a peaceful succession to the nation itself. I don’t mean to imply that he was a stand-up guy, but perspective and nuance are so crucial for any historical research. Well-known aspects of Henry’s life like his being conferred the title of Defender of the Faith for writing his Defense of the Seven Sacraments, his genuine grand passion & love for Anne Boleyn, the reformation of the Church of England etc. are only touched upon in the briefest manner, or even made light of.The women are understandably relegated to the background in this book on Henry and “the men who made himâ€, the author didn’t stop at shifting focus in this way, however, but went a bit too far the other way, diminishing their actual importance in Henry’s life and their worth as people in their own right. She treats Henry’s wives almost like mere puppets on a string being moved about by the men in their lives and doesn’t give them enough credit for their many qualities like piety, loyalty, intelligence, courage, political acumen and resourcefulness, to name a few.The e-book didn’t have any pictures in it, which really should go hand in hand with a biography. A pity.

Most books about this period focus on his six wives or Henry the VIII. The author has done an impressive amount of research, quoting extensively from primary sources, letters, diaries, official records, etc.Henry the VIII was obsessed with producing a male heir to carry on his reign. His father had ended a civil war and Henry the VIII worried that there would be another civil war without a male heir.A personal note: I just returned from a UK visit and toured Castle Howard, in the Howard family for more than 500 years. It is now owned by The National Trust. The last Howard turned it over to the Trust with the proviso that he continue to live there. He died recently, but used to give tours while he was alive. Castle Howard was a stately mansion and not a Castle. Actual castles in the UK have the town name first, as in Caernarfon Castle. Katherine Howard was one of Henry the VIII's wives.Interestingly, many of the men who served Henry the VIII were named Thomas-- Thomas More, Thomas Cromwell, Thomas Cranmer, and Thomas Howard.One complaint: Chapter 2 has 57 footnotes, but only two and a half are listed in the footnote section.

My soon-to-be 8 year old daughter has a bit of a macabre streak -- she saw this book at the mall and immediately put it on her birthday list. The rest of the family thought it a bit odd, but this IS the same girl that carries around a skeleton doll for the entire month of October...'How They Croaked' goes further than just describing the "How" of the way some famous folks' lives ended -- there's also quite a bit of insight into some of the other medical issues they fought. And it doesn't just end at death... the book also reveals some surprising stories about missing body parts, thievery, etc. I learned quite a bit having it read aloud from the backseat during a roadtrip! Note: The book doesn't mince words when it comes to slicing, dicing and decomposing, so you can also expect this to lead to more conversations about anatomy, etc. Heed the notice at the beginning that says "If you don't have the guts for gore, do not read this book."The publisher listed the book as appropriate for ages 10 to 14, but even at 8, my daughter was okay with it. YMMV. You'll definitely get used to hearing "Ewwwwww! Hey, did you know __________?"
I bought this for my son the summer after 5th grade when he was 11 (it was one of the options for him to pick from a required reading list for 6th grade). He's a slow reader so he doesn't enjoy reading much, but he liked this book. The great thing about this book is that it's made up of many short stories rather than long chapters.The stories are very brief summaries of the lives and deaths of famous people like King Tut, Henry VIII, Christopher Columbus, Albert Einstein, and Edgar Allan Poe. There's a total of 19 famous people listed in the Table of Contents.This book was easy for my son to read without feeling overwhelmed because each mini story is only about 5-7 pages.Plus I enjoyed the facts he shared with me each time he read about someone.I have friends whose 10-11 year olds are reading the Twilight series of books. My son would have a panic attack if he had to read a 500+ page book. Granted, he'll eventually need to get used to the idea of reading big books as school progresses, but for now this is good for him.
Looks creepy BUT it's a GREAT book. Bought it for my 10 year old daughter. It doesn't focus only on how they died. It gives them facts about who that person was sms what they did that made them famous for example Mozart. My daughter loved it. My doctor bought it for her daughter as well.
Poor George Washington!! It's pretty unbelievable to see how the "normal medical practices" of their day actually added to these famous people's demise! Sometimes I wonder if that has changed much! I liked the book & have given it to 3 to 4 people already!! It amazes me how many people will do WHATEVER their Dr. says!!
The book arrived a day early which is always nice. My son had to have it for school. I read most of it in about 2 hours before I gave it to him. Pretty darn interesting book.
While a very interesting book in of itself, it doesn’t go into quite as much detail (gory or otherwise) as other books do. For morbid middle schoolers, this is the perfect book. Anyone older than 15 (and who can stomach it) would probably enjoy ‘Rest In Pieces’ by Bess Lovejoy just a tad bit more.
My rising 7th grader is required to read a fiction and non-fiction book during the summer and write book reports on them both. Since my son loves Doctor Oz, CSI, ID Network, and similar programs I figured he would be interested in this book as a non-fiction option. I was right. He finished this book in 3 day and was so excited to tell me how past icons lived and died. I even read it. Good book.
Bought for my son, he had started to read it in class and the school year ended so I ordered it so he could finish. Love that he shares the facts and it’s written to ware he is interested and wants to know more!

Dr John Lambshead designed the award-winning computer game, _Frederick Forsythe's_ Fourth Protocol, which was the first icon-driven game, was editor of _Games & Puzzles_ and _Wargames News_, and has written a number of wargaming rules supplements for Games Workshop. He also wrote the officially licensed Dr Who gaming rules for Warlord Games. He was co-author, with Rick Priestley, of _Tabletop Wargames, A Designer and Writers_ _Handbook (_Pen & Sword Books, 2016). When not designing games he is a novelist writing SF&F for Bane Books. First, this is really my intro to diceless rules. I was intrigued, as I've read a number of blogs where folks talk about setting up enemy AI based off of cards, etc. That sounded intriguing, but I wasn't fully certain I could wrap my head around how that would work (even after looking at some charts. I can be thick).NUTS AND BOLTS: First, this is a quick read. I accomplished it over the course of a couple lunches and a couple brief reads in bed before dozing off. That was for a full front-to-back read. Even with it being a quick read, I found the rules very easy to follow, and the meat of the explanation took maybe less than 15 minutes to get through. I do appreciate that not only are the rules explained, but peppered throughout the author tells why certain decisions were made. As a "deep thinker" I like knowing what I'm doing and why. I want to know why some guns have "infinite" range and others don't. I got all the reasoning I needed from the author. Not sure I would implement them, but I get where he was coming from and it fits into his vision of a "skirmish," which also gets a hefty dissection and definition at the outset.WHAT IS INCLUDED: As with many of the wargame rules I've recently purchased, most of the book is filled with scenarios and fluff. Unlike some other books, these are very well done and feel like full ideas and not simply undeveloped seeds. Additionally, this is handled era by era (Napoleonic has a weapons breakdown, an explanation of how armies fought, some details about the state of warmaking in this time, and then runs into a period appropriate scenario) and accounts for 5-6 different sets of weapons as well as details about what armies fit the period, and scenarios. Each was different enough to make them feel like valuable additions that added character, and it was clear that the core rules held up under each distinct tweak. I think that is a good balancing act as it could have come off feeling like the rules were simply being reiterated a half dozen times, or feeling like the wheel is being reinvented over and over. The tweaks in each time period felt like the result of the endless expansion of weapons of war, and the author did a good job talking about what those significant changes looked like. A bullet is a bullet, but you can see how the rules account for better accuracy, longer ranges, changes in rate of fire, etc.MECHANICS: The card system was well thought out, and again the author does a nice job talking about the probabilities of something like pulling a red or black card, pulling a particular suit, and so on. There is a well thought out method that is employed, and I appreciated getting to see the math behind the method. As I have predominantly played with dice-based odds, this helped me compare apples to apples, and also show me some areas where there is greater flexibility in using cards as compared to needing a range of dice to change odds.Overall, I would say that this was a book worth buying. Whether this is the only system you decide to use, or you simply want to expand your options (like me), I think this is a very solid offering that captures small scale engagements quite well.
I have been in the historical gaming hobby for 4+ decades and just like others always on the lookout for a new set of rules. Coming across these after a mention on The Miniatures Page and running a game with them this week I can only say that the system is simply the most elegant one I have ever encountered. Cards replace dice for initiative, ranged and close combat producing a wonderfully random game turn. Various skills can be added to the individual portions of your forces to present more flavor to the game. Vehicles, crew served and heavier weapons are also represented in the rules along with scenarios for each era. If you enjoy table top skirmish gaming these rules should be not only on your rules book shelf but on your game table. Simply put these rules are Beyond Superb!
I found it interesting and simple to play. I would have liked to have seen what the author would do for the pre-musket periods.
