I hate getting bad advice from bad golfers. With this book, I know who to listen to and who to ignore. Don't listen to bad golfers. Just buy this indespensible book.
Hogan's book is a short, but comprehensive analysis of the golf swing. His stated purpose of giving the average weekend golfer the tools to develop a repeatable golf swing has, in my opinion, been met. The fundamentals he espouses are few, and simple enough to implement without causing one to overthink. I found his views about grip and stance, and their importance in setting up the rest of the swing, particularly helpful. If you're a student of the game, this book is a prerequisite before reading the multitude of expert analyses of Hogan's swing that are available elsewhere. The advanced golfer interested in developing his/her knowledge of shaping shots and ball flight won't find information here. But if you're like me and want to develop better consistency of contact with all your clubs and eliminate anxiety as you stand over the ball, then this book is for you.
I'm a novice golfer that has been away for the sport for several years. Getting back into it I wanted to find a resource that took a simple and direct approach to the golf swing. I think I have found it. In a sea of technology, social media marketing and five steps programs to driving the ball 300+ yards, this book gets right down to business and what the golf swing is really all about. If you take the teachings and then go online and see the many slow motion videos of Mr. Hogan's swing, then you can really see how it all comes together. And the illustrations in the book are very effective and well done too. I'm a visual learner, so that was important to me. Lastly, I'll say that I love the way this book is written. Somehow it seems to give you a sense not just about the swing, but about the man behind perhaps the most beautiful swing in golf history. Very beautifully executed book.

Hogan went through how he mastered, if there is such a thing as he puts it, the game over decades of learning, practicing, and improving. Before I took golf at a later age I calculated how many strokes of 7 iron I need to do a 6000 yard course. The answer of course is 40 shots. I doubled that for putts and goofs which makes it 80. I thought there isn't much to master that game and it has been my daily challenge for 20 years. The book shows 8 specific motions to do that. Success is not guaranteed though. Very enjoyable reading.
This book is all any starting novice golfer will need for proper instructions on full swing. For short game, I will recommend Getting Up And Down by Tom Watson. I found numerous videos for tips available in Youtube largely useless or misleading. To learn powerful and repeatable full swing, this book is best because it explains all the steps from the grip to downswing as one coherent system that is what Mr. Hogan refers to as chain actions. Having said that, this book elicits some questions, as well. For example, though Mr. Hogan devoted Chapter 2 to stance and posture, unexplicably he does not talk about address. In two other equally great books, Getting Up And Down by Tom Watson and Golf My Way by Jack Nicklaus, the authors emphasize address should reflect so called hitting geometry in which the hands are ahead of the ball location. The reader of this book can only guess what Mr. Hogan's thought should be on proper address from one of the illustrations in the book, where remarkably to me at least, the club is held almost perfectlly vertical (pg. 24)! I can also see the same vertical address in numerous videos of him. Another example is the position of the grip at the top of backswing that he aptly refers to as the crossroad. He emphasizes in this book the left arm and grip should stay in the backswing plane which is defined by the shoulders and the ball location. This is a point I found very useful and follow. However, it s widely known that his grip at the crossroad was far below this plane and, as a matter of fact, one of the flattest of all PGA pros according to Jack Nicklaus. Nevertheless, I have no doubt this is the first book any starting golfers should read and refer to whenever they have questions when they practice full swing. They will benefit immeasurably.
Played golf on and off for years with my game never improving, even with lessons. Frustration led me to this book that I selected based on its high ratings. In his book, Ben Hogan offers simple lessons of how to hold a club, the proper stance, back swing, and downswing. The lessons have significantly improved my game with me hitting good, straight shots. The distances for each club have increased twenty percent. The book may have been written in the fifties, but the lessons are timeless.
This is the only thing a golfer needs to read...i am sure there are things in here that do not apply to all golfers..but in general, this is the golf swing. You can spend thousands of dollars on lessons, aids, etc...( I know because i did!) and then come back to realize this is every bit of all that..condensed into a short book. I also learned the hard way that my parents knew what they were talking about! (Of course that cost me quite a bit more than golf did...but I'll,write that book review if my Dad can come back from beside the good lord and write it!)
Wish I read this 20 years ago when I first started playing the game. Over the years I learned things that made my game decently work. After reading this, it became apparent that my fundamentals were wayyyyyy off. This brought new perspective to my game. my arms would tire out by the end of a round due to over utilization of my arm muscles. Now, My swing is more efficient, repeatable and effective. Bruce Myles wrote a fascinating account of Soviet women who VOLUNTEERED for combat duty during WW II. The book gave examples of young women using their "feminine wiles" to gain entry into combat training. While these women were courageous, tough, and even ferocious, they never lost their femininity. When their male comrades originally treated with disdain, the men soon learned that these women were brave, tough, and deadly effective in combat much to the chagrin of the German enemies.Myles reported some humorous anecdotes. When the young women were fitted for uniforms which often did not fit, the girls spent time sewing, cutting, and altering their uniforms for a better fit and to look more stylish. The women were ordered to cut their hair according to "the rule book" which they reluctantly did. One young woman tied her hair to conceal the fact she did not obey an order. The humor was exposed when the regional commander inspected the young women. He discovered the ploy, and he teased the local commander that young women without long hair are akin to horses without manes.In spite of the humorous anecdotes, the volunteers were sternly warned about the danger and death on the Russian Front. The women were subjected to rigorous training, and Myles carefully described the attention to detail and risks involved. Yet the young women volunteers did not flinch. The commanders placed these women where they could be most effective. One highly skilled fighter pilot was humiliated that she was held in reserve to train navigators. When she complained, she was reprimanded that men were dying. Her commanding officer told this pilot that new recruits knew little about navigation and needed a trained expert to teach them.Some of the book dealt with personal relationships. Proposals of marriage were nixed by the prospect of death of those in love. Some of pilots had family members in German occupied areas of the USSR. Some had loved ones in the besieged city of Leningrad whose residents suffered terribly from shelling/bombing, famine, and bitter cold. These women had to focus on their training,but the stress of worry about loved ones was still in the minds of these brave volunteers.Once stories of German excesses were exposed, many of these women Soviet pilots learned to hate defeat more than fear death. As Myles wrote, the hatred for the Germans did not become blind hatred. These Soviet women knew that careful planning and extensive training made them better pilots and more of a deadly threat to the hated enemy. Some of the exploits of the women fighter pilots were exemplified by Lydia Latyvak who showed her skills as a fighter pilot and became an ace in the Soviet Air Force. She enhanced her reputation at the Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943). Lityvak was approached about marriage, but she declined until WW II was over. She never got the chance when she died a the Battle of Kursk in 1943.A group that got attention in Myles' book was The Night Witches. These women used old biplanes to bomb German targets. These girls were deadly. They would fly slow biplanes so low that they did not have parachutes. Within a short distance of their German targets, they would shut their engines so avoid detection, glide to their targets, and drop bombs and then "get the hell out of their." These women looked foolish on their first mission and were mocked. However, subsequent missions proved how brave and effective these women were. One man lost his wife in aerial combat, and his women comrades honored the dead hero which inspired a motive for revenge.The personal anecdotes in this book give the book a "human interest story" in the midst of war, death, tragedy, and inhuman cruelty. The book similar to others the undersigned reviewed is a testimony to courage of the Soviet people, including women, who refused to collapse even when the situations were the worst that could be imagined. This book originally published in 1981 and had the benefit of first-person sources: the surviving women who had served and who provided many anecdotes, personal accounts amid the ongoing story of the women's bomber and fighter regiments. The stories of the PO-2 regiment -- biplanes engaged in night-intruder raids and enemy-territory drops -- are hair-raising. The other two women's regiments, flying Yak-1 fighters and Pe-2 attack bombers, proved to be brave and capable pilots, with several women scoring impressive totals of German aircraft. All three regiments would fight in the biggest battles of the war -- Crimea, Stalingrad, Kursk, Berlin -- and one, the biplane unit, would be re-numbered as a Guards regiment, the highest unit award, and a number of women in all three regiments won the Hero of the Soviet Union medal, the highest individual honor. Well worthwhile for people interested in military history, Soviet history and women's studies. They served because the Soviet Union had its back to the wall and needed any combatants they could get, but once the women had the chance they proved to be an elite, courageous, resourceful and deadly.Highest recommendation for this unique book. This is a very exciting read. The wartime experiences of any one of ten or more of these young women would have made a great adventure yarn by itself. If Lily Litvak, for example, had been an American flyer there would probably be forty books and ten movies about her by now. It's one of the many sad legacies of the Cold War, that we in the West know so little about stories like hers.The title "Night Witches" is a bit misleading for Great Patriotic War buffs. The actual Night Witches (a German coinage for the women night bomber pilots and navigators) are only one third of the story. The author also covers the day bomber crews and - coolest of all - the free hunter fighter pilots which include the amazing Litvak.I'm subtracting a star because there are no footnotes and no bibliography. True, about 85% to 90% of the book is from the interviews he had with the survivors (in or just before 1981 when the book was first published), but he includes paragraphs with statements about which battle was the turning point, or how the Yak 9 was better than the previous models etc. without any citation. This is sloppy scholarship, though not much of a bother for the semi-casual reader like myself.I want to add a thank you to the previous reviewers who have mentioned other books I will be checking out.Anyway, worth reading, without a doubt.
This story is told with great respect and yet reflects the quiet determination of those amazing women pilots who fought by their countrymen's side. There is a well rounded look at their lives, the conditions under which they operated and the commitment of the women fighters, bombers, mechanics and navigators. Next time someone tells me that women have no courage or fortitude, I will be able to point to these women who sacrificed so much to serve their country. There is a great sisterhood that needs to be honored. The only thing I think would have improved this book would have been some maps of the areas of conflict and better quality photographs (although it is possible that these don't exist).
Slightly dated writing style. Fictionalized version of some historical events. Good for a romanticised view of a unique situation and incredible people. I have seen comments from veterans of the unit dismiss it as inaccurate fiction. But a readable introduction to the situation. I am following up with books of interviews.

This isn't a book about big-time rodeo. In these pages you won't find professional circuit events or national rodeo stars. The people of Rodeo Nebraska work all week on ranches and farms and compete on weekends. For them, rodeo isn't a way to make a living. It's simply part of living.Eight years ago Mark Harris set out on a mission: to portray Nebraska's contemporary rodeo culture more artistically and comprehensively in photographs than anyone ever has--and then write a book worthy of the photos. At eighty-two events in sixty-two separate locations he photographed the competition, the rural crowds, and all things connected with them. He visited ranches that breed broncs, bulls, and speed horses, and spoke to hundreds of competitors.The photos here are driven by questions. What brings people to the sport? What is it like to compete in rodeo? How do the winners get so good? Harris gives us action shots, to be sure--bone-crushing falls and majestic rides. But he also turns his camera on the people: the communities that host rodeos and those who participate. His photographs reveal the odd love-hate relationship between competitors and the animals that challenge them. These are men and women with an intimate knowledge of livestock. Riders who wrestle steers and calves sit a horse well, often convincing the viewer that they are but one creature. No surprise there--these are people who grew up with rodeo. You see that, too, in the photographs, children donning well-worn hats and big buckles as naturally as the old timers. One suspects that these kids had baby shoes with pointed toes.Harris also gets up close and personal with his subjects, at times dangerously so. The safety of a strong wooden fence also insulates one from the essence of the ritual. And ritual it is, always the hero's test, the outcome never certain.But Harris's work is not a love song. Rodeo is hard and sometimes cruel. You see that in the images, too. These characteristics are intrinsic to the event.Rodeo is more than a sport. It is entertaining, but that is not its core purpose. As historian Candy Moulton explains in the book's foreword, rodeo is a living tradition with deep roots here. In words and pictures, Mark Harris does it justice.

Mr. Harris takes the raw ingredients of brute animal power, adds a microcosm of human emotions of participants and spectators, then includes a very well thought out commentary. The result is an exceptionally appealing and enjoyable book (not just for Nebraskans) for rodeo-goers and anyone who enjoys a window into unexpected places.
Great pictures - love the book!
This is a beautiful and engrossing book for anyone who might be interested in the unique American subculture of rodeo. The photographs are stunning and honest, capturing jaw-dropping action and animal intensity as well as the sweetness of children in the stands and dancers after hours. Harris's text offers a well-researched, textured look into the sport. He doesn't shy away from asking the hard questions about animal and human welfare in rodeo, and leaves the reader with a lot to think about. A satisfying journey into a world most of us don't know about. This is an excellent book!
I didn’t expect all of the history, research, and inside scoops about rodeo people, life, and lingo. It's in-depth and interesting. I grew up in a small town, so this sparked lots of sentimental reminders. For those who didn’t, it teaches. Many of the photos are jaw-dropping and could win state fair ribbons – cute kids (my favorite), airborne cowboys, artistic angles, beautiful colors and backgrounds. Some photos made me wince and grit my teeth, flying hooves and pain in process. Then there are things like “dragged on a bison hide.†LOL. Great stuff.
The author finds a way to capture the quintessence of Nebraska, not only in breathtaking photography but also in the stories and history behind a great American tradition. Browsing through the stunning photos or reading cover to cover, you will get a true and intense feeling for what it is like to be alongside the rails at a Nebraska rodeo and an understanding of the folks who play a part in them. My wife and I love this book and love sharing it with our friends and family.
Being from Nebraska, I love this book. It not only portrays the sport of rodeo and its importance in this state, it displays rodeo as the ultimate family event As well. Those of us raised in the ranch country of Nebraska grew up attending rodeos and developed an appreciation of the event and everything related to it. Harris does an excellent job of capturing all that is rodeo for his readers to experience.
Being from Nebraska, I received this as a gift and was especially captivated with the stunning collection of photos and the great stories behind the shots. This book has been on my coffee table and is always the one visitors are drawn to...whether they know rodeo or are just curious. The author creates a lively and vivid description that I'm proud to say represents my home state!
This unique perspective of small town rodeos, in both the photography and the storytelling, is a delight for all to see and read.

What a wonderful book! Written in 1884 or so, Mr. Sowell's memories were still fresh of the times and his writing skills were still top-notch. Even though the book's subject could have been gory, there are enough 'sides' to it to balance it all out. For example, recounting Sowell's skills at finding honey trees and foiling competitors' efforts at copying him is a funny tale. On the other hand, a long account of a fight at Panther Creek in 1871 is serious and realistic. His statement of purpose for the reason the Texas Rangers were on the frontier is beautifully lyrical and unforgettable. One of the best first-hand accounts of the Texas frontier I've read in a long time. Highly recommended.
This book is not written in any great literary style but is just a straightforward telling of Texas history. The author tells of his family's part in these events. The last part of the book relates his own adventures as a Texas Ranger during 1870 to 1872. Tales about their fights with Comanches and Kiowas are told without embellishment. If you have read "Lonesome Dove" this book will make you appreciate it even more. The book was written in 1883 so many of the events were still fresh in the author's mind. There is none of the sentimental feelings of later days about thoroughly savage Indians. The story is told like it really was.
A very different time and a much higher quality of men. Honor, loyalty, virtue were the mark of a man, so unlike today. It was a violent time and place and these men kept their humanity while defending themselves and their families in the only manner available. When the silly society we have built finally breaks down and we find ourselves as the only source of protection and subsistence, let's hope that there are some among us that still have there qualities.
What a spell binding book of the early History of Texas. There are stories about the battle of the Alamo that few have ever heard. These stories are told by the people who actually lived them. These are folks who have been largely lost to history. If you have an interest in how the real west won and how folks lived , then this is a must read.
The writer lived the early history of Texas, 1830 to 1884 and knew first-hand what he wrote about. But this is not traditional history as it does not have a complete context. Instead it is a series of stories just as the title implies. The take-away message to me was that Texans understood the risks from Indians, outlaws and nature and accepted them just as we accept modern risks; auto accident, identity thief, etc and our feeling that ther risks were extreme is revealing about both them and us. Good read as action/adventure but even better for insight into early Texas conditions.
Really found this book interesting. Opened my eyes to pioneer Texas. Never realized how violent the early days of Texas were. Recommend to anyone interested in Texas history. Not a book you can't put down, but had no trouble finishing it.
You only need to visit the ranger museum to understand the dedication of the men who have been, and are now Texas rangers. The writer brought the true statement, and make-up of the people that made the first rangers. They were called on when needed, and cut back or disbanded when they weren't needed. This same thing is being applied to our current military which is a shame.
