This is the real deal. I spent more time looking at this after I served in the Army than during. Don't judge me - it was a rough time and I was stationed in Hawaii!The book is comprehensive in all its military lingo drabness. Contains exactly what one would expect from a military manual for land nav, and makes a nice addition to your bookshelf or reading repertoire. Land nav wasn't my strong point, but I like the subject and this manual is as good as it gets for a comprehensive introduction to the subject.
If you can't figure out how to use a compass and map after reading this you better just stay home and have stuff delivered.
My husband LOVES this book. He says it's the best map reading book he's ever seen!

I'm not entirely sure how to talk about this book. I think it's a kid's book, but I'm not sure exactly what age group.Connor is a genuinely likeable character, but Grace... She's consistently described as mentally strong and eerily intelligent, yet she never actually shows any of those characteristics.The male characters are all seem to be interestingly complex, but the female characters are, aside from Grace, coldly professional, until it's appropriate for them to blush or be supportive.Adult characters keep saying things they shouldn't say to children. The setting and time period is murky (we aren't even told when the story takes place until almost a third of the way into the book). The anachronism stew only makes things more confusing.The writing isn't unreadable, but it is often laughable.And the ending. I don't really have an issue with cliffhangers, but this book really ended mid-scene.
I decided to buy this book for my boyfriend's little brother because my boyfriend enjoyed the books so much when he was a kid.The pricing on this book is awesome, and it arrived in two days. Already my boyfriend and his little brother are enjoying reading this book together, the story is great for younger boys or girls and we will definitely be buying the next books in the series once they are done.
Although an adult reader, I wanted to see what my 14 year old grandson was so excited about. The male protagonist is 14 and this appealed to my grandson, I am sure. I finished the book in a few hours and found it appropriate reading material for boys or girls. It is a fun book and reminds me of the mythology I read in a set of children's encyclopedias I had as a child. The cover is slick paper with a dramatic rescue scene that I believe leads the reader into the book to discover the why of the rescue. This is the first of the series and it caught my grandson's fancy and he has read the entire series. He was a reluctant reader before, so I think this book will lead him to more challenging books in the future.
I'm 25 years old. Most women my age are reading romance or mysteries or murder books. Me? I was killing time till Rick Riordan's "The Throne of Fire" came out. So at the cheep kindle price and no space to lose on my book self I picked it up for a cheep laugh not expecting anything but that. But what a surprise I got! It's for kids so the read was easy and flowed wonderfully as I tore threw this first book. I couldn't put it down! At first I had wished it was meant for a higher age group so it could be more graphic, but as it went I learned to love the simple style and the way they cleverly made these two dark and bloody sides kid friendly. When I started it I never intended to get the next book, it was suppose to be a time killer! But when it ended I had 1000s questions! What happened the the little vampire!? Where did the evil vampire go!? Who's really on the side of the pirate captain!? To my horror the book left me no answers! So I picked up the next one and ripped threw it at a pace to match my Harry Potter reading! So now here I sit, Throne of Fire on my nightstand untouched and I'm on book three of the Vampirates. And I can't wait to see what happens next! This will be, without a doubt, a book i will buy a hard copy of. I need this on my self. And on an artistic note, I love the covers of all the book. masterfully done, stunning, and dripping with the tone of the book. If you still can't tell if you want the book, look at the cover and tell me you don't want to read what's inside I dare you!

Zug, a longtime squash player, begins in the 1500s, when tennis was all the rage. But by the early 1700s, there were variations of the game, including one called racquets, created by inmates in the Fleet, a British debtors' prison. From there we move smoothly on to the 1800s, when students at elite Harrow School, just outside London, transmuted racquets into the game we now call squash. The author charts the modern history of squash--from the 1860s to the present day--with gusto, introducing us to dozens of the game's best and most flamboyant players (best and flamboyant seem to go hand-in-hand in squash circles), explaining why this seemingly simple game is among the most subtle and hard-to-learn sports. If you love the game, like to read, this book on squash tells the most complete history of the game...Laced with humor, insight, history...this is as much a social history as the main players are revealed as the characters outside the game that are the Who's Who in rarified circles....this is the book for anyone wanting to know the people, the places, the courts, the equipment that were the game to the current state of the sport.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading the background on the creation and evolution of the best sport in the world. Escapes me why it hasn't made it into the Olympics at this point (editorial comment on the state of sport in the world)!!!
Well documented but hard to read. It seems repetitive and with no cohesiveness. It did not hold my attention for long.

This book completely underplays the dominance of Khans for 20 years, Jahangir Khan who also eclipsed the career of Mark Talbot. Janhangir won 6 Open Titles, 10 consecutive British Titles, 12 US Hardball Titles, Jahangir won 12 of 13 US Open Hard Ball titles he competed. Eclipsed the reputation of Mark Talbot of US whom he beat 10 times in 11 encounters. For 5 years : 555 consecutive matches won. The most deceptive, cunning, agressive player.Jahangir Khan was replaced by Jansher Khan, the impeccable retriever of impossible balls who was unsquashable for next 10 years. The lanky, lean, mean. Between them, they played 37 times, score 18:19, there is no reference to such fierce and balanced rivalry.Geoff Hunt was known to have most excruciating training regime, that included 40 sprints of 100 meters a day. 1981 World Open, against Geoff Hunt, Jahangir Khan lost the first game 7-9 to win the next three at 9-1, 9-2, 9-2. Geoff Hunt quipped," today I came to know what I have been doing to others."Such Titanic moments are blacked out in this book. It speaks of Harvard, its players, their greatness.The book neither looks across The Pond, nor at the Asians.
When I asked the squash pro at my club if he'd read Zug's book, he turned up his nose. He found much of the material self-indulgent. As for me - a person who took up the sport at a time when many others my age have retired their rackets - I admired the quality of Zug's writing and the way he unraveled the story of the game's evolution. I dug those historical tidbits (did you know the Titanic had a squash court?) and the tales of some of the sport's more eccentric players. Yeah, sure, there were some parts of SQUASH which "hit the nick and died" for me, but no big deal. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has been bitten by the SQUASH bug.
...if you've never played golf, it's darn near unwatchable. If you've never played squash, I'm not sure this book is all that readable, save in small chunks. However, for a player such as me it's a great book. Most interesting are Zug's efforts at unravelling the origins of the game from the morass of legends, myths and speculations surrounding that whole English prison/public school debate; and his thoughts on the fairly recent conversion of the North American countries to the international softball game. He mourns, as I do somewhat, the loss of the quirky games and personalities that the American hardball game produced. If I had one quibble it would be the author's dwelling on the stories and athletes with ties to the Ivy League's perennial squash powers. I could have used a little less history of Harvard's stars of the 1920's and a little more on some less well-known squash luminaries. For example, Heather McKay, the Australian, won the British Open 16 consecutive years, didn't lose a single game in a tournament for nine straight years, etc., etc., but merits two paragraphs? Overall an impressive accomplishment for Mr. Zug. Well written, thoroughly researched, and heartfelt. Thanks!

I am really excited to make and the designs in this book. The instructions - both at the beginning and for the individual projects - are good, the colors are brilliant, and some of the patterns are really lovely, the sort you see on Pinterest and think, sheesh, I wish I knew how to do that sort of thing. Well, with this book, there's no excuse not to try! However, I do have a few issues.Firstly, some of the designs require a die-cut machine. One of the things I love about quilling is that it's low profile, it doesn't take up much space and is inexpensive. I don't own a lot of extra tools - and while I understand the author's connection with Quilled Creations, it does seem like one must own most of the tools they sell to get through all the projects successfully. Perhaps this is picky of me, but I saw the front and back covers, and thought these designs would be similar to what I saw there - easily done with my hands and a needle tool. It was disappointing to learn otherwise. (Note that most should be fine, as long as you're comfortable making large tight rolls unassisted.) A few also call for specialty papers, which I actually like, because I have a few packs of those that I wasn't sure what to do with. They could probably be swapped for regular paper in most cases.Second gripe is that some of the other projects not shown on the cover are extremely simplistic, or not mandalas at all. For example, the eight-point snowflakes, while symmetrical, are less appealing and intricate than the snowflake designs in the Quilled Creations snowflake kit, and the Sunset design is just a lot of large tight rolls. I sort of figured that a) the designs will be mandalas, and b) that they will be a step above what one could get for free elsewhere (or easily duplicate just by sight). I can't blame anyone for putting the most attractive designs on the cover, but honestly, looking at something like the lotus and then getting to the Blossom & Bee, it's clear that they are simply not on the same level. (I say this with much reservation and with apologies to the author, art is after all in the eye of the beholder, but as a big fan of mandala coloring books, some of these just didn't seem to belong.)All of that being said, my real advice to buyers on a budget would be to check out this book at a store or a library and decide for yourself whether it's worth paying for - you can definitely switch up the colors and patterns a great deal if you're so inclined, and there are plenty of aspirational projects here. I'm enthusiastic about 20/30, so in spite of a few that seem out of place, it's a good value. Happy quilling!
I love the patterns in this book - they are beautiful. But as a beginner quiller, I have found that the instructions are inaccurate. Oftentimes, the paper lengths are too long and make the coils too tight to make the desired effect and the circle sizes aren't always correct. In order to remedy these issues, I have started measuring the patterns themselves to get more precise results and shortening the paper lengths.
Quilling has always intrigued me but I didn't do much of it because I didn't know what to do with the tiny motifs I made. Quilled Mandalas, on the other hand, offer instructions leading to big masterpieces that are easily achievable, one component at a time.You'll be hooked, and you have plenty of time to make and frame a few mandalas for Christmas presents.I've found a couple of omissions/errors; for example, you need royal blue strips for the peacock but the color isn't in the materials list. So, read the instructions all the way through before placing an order for the papers you'll need.Still, it's an inspiring book and I'm having more fun with quilling than ever before. This book is one of my best craft-book purchases this year.
I admit it, I'm addicted to paper and have been for many years! I love books and I love quilling! This book is physically BEAUTIFUL.....the cover, the pages are all exquisite even to the touch! Alli Bartkowski did another amazing job with this book. She is truly an artist and this book shows off her beautiful style and gorgeous designs.....and teaches us exactly how to imitate her craft. The instructions, illustrations and templates make what looks so difficult, very easy. If you've never quilled before, practice on simpler projects or get a beginners book before you tackle any of these, but once you get the hang of quilling, you will be able to make these lovely projects. I have all of her books.....and others on quilling...but this is by far the greatest yet! Do not hesitate for a minute to purchase this book Update: I've made several of the projects in this book already and placed them on greeting cards. Truly beautiful as an artistic gift. Changed the colors to suit my tastes but designs are truly lovely and come together perfectly on the templates provided.
There are some beautiful designs in the book, the problem is twofold dropping the star rating down to a 3. The length of the strips is not accurate in many cases and the suggested colors weren’t either. The first thing i made the yellow was ordered as suggested in the book but instead if the darker yellow in the picture the color was really pale and washed out. The instructions aren’t always the easiest to understand either.
This is the best Quilling book I own. The instructions are very easy to follow. The measurements are spot-on. The projects are contemporary. This book has 3 levels of difficulty with projects in 2 different sizes. Highly recommend this well written book.
Wanted to use this book before commenting. Found the directions clear and templates accurate. There's a mandala for every taste and the color photos make a quitter eager to try them all. These mandalas are not quick to make, but final product is well worth the effort. I'd give more than five stars if I could. And, quilled mandalas are a terrific project to do with older grandkids.
Nice book. The photos taken of the quilling project examples on a black background really are amazing just by themselves, but the book is also very well written. Clear instruction. Some background on quilling and a nice overview of papers and tools.

This book is absolutely fabulous. Takes the mystery out of the trigger mitts. It is more than a "how to" knitting book--it is a story of the people that make up the magnificent Island of Newfoundland. The photography is "some brilliant" makes you long to be there. This is a book of Culture and Tradition. You don't even have to knit to enjoy it.
I ordered this book Dec 25 and it arrived Jan 18! Maybe it actually shipped from Newfoundland? But it was totally worth the wait! I love this book. It includes some history and lots of patterns to knit. LOADS of color pictures and patterns in many different colors. I am very happy with the book!
I was very disappointed in this book, I was expecting more colorful charts, the charts are skimpy at best, and the patterns are all written, TO MUCH READING for my taste, I was excited to pop open the book at a nice chart and start knitting, but they go on and on about Norway knitting, and its hard to find the exact pattern you want to work on. So I would say this is not worth $30, Ive purchased much nicer pattern books with colorful charts for less money.
This is such a beautiful and interesting book. I highly recommend it for knitters and Newfoundlanders and anyone who just loves a good “yarnâ€. ;-)

For those of us who love the traditions inherent in knitting, this is a book to keep in your library. It’s a worthy successor to Robin Hansen’s iconic mitten books based on patterns from Maine and the Maritimes. The instructions are good (assuming you’ve knit mittens in the round before) with lots of suggestions for colorways. The anecdotes are wonderful. You’ll refer back to this book again and again for inspiration, ideas and mitten patterns!

a very good book about all the inner aspects of the cd format and cd players, a bit too technnical and scientific, complex subject, but is a good book..i dont know what else to say,, lots of graphips explaning the digital audio system , not for everyone,, buy it if you really like this subject, the casual reader must be stay away from this stuff!!..long live the cd format!.. the best comercial physical audio format to date!!
A bit out of date but that's to be expected given the rate of change in the DAC/ADC world.
Although it isn't easy to understand a lot of the technology that this book explains, I think it does a good job explaining the science and technology that go into CD audio. I am not an engineer or an expert, but I have enjoyed getting my head around at least some of the aspects of how CD's and CD players work.
