I am a big Mark Rippetoe fan. Not to get preachy, but his books really have changed my life. I have been lifting for a long time and with marginal results. Rippetoe's thoughts on strength training and the overall fitness industry are spot on. After using some of the principles in his books and also Jim Wendler's 5-3-1, i have made more progress in the last 2 years than in the rest of my lifting life combined. There is a lot of bullsh*t out there regarding strength training, so do yourself a favor and read anything by Mark Rippetoe. To be specific about this book, it has a lot of the content in some of his other books, but this is on a more personal level. He gives some background on his experiences and perspective on where his opinions are derived. I would say to buy his other book Starting Strength first, followed by Practical Programming for Strength training second. This is a good add-on, but doesn't have as much specific information as the other 2 books.
I am enjoying reading this book. I've read all or parts of the other strength building books other reviewers compare this with. This is sort of rambling with explanations that are shorter and less technical than the other of Rips books. Each reader would have to evaluate that for themselves. I like the humor which pops up frequently but usually unexpected. I would buy it again but for the most technical information a person might want or need the other books are better. As a novice I want enough technical information that I won't injure myself but get worn out in the intense technical detail of the other books. I think I'll be glad that I have both.
I am a fan of Mark Rippetoe and his strength training programs. If you are too, this book will be a worthwhile recreational read. There are some interesting contentions made and also a few anecdotes and methods of describing the importance of strength that might be useful to the strength coach looking to convince someone away from the Bosu ball. I don't look to attain more than a 300/400/500 lifting ability, but I appreciate Rip's views on fitness and life and think that the fitness industry is way too far to the other side of the spectrum (towards ellipticals and the Bosu ball). Every guy could stand to have a callus or two torn off his hand during a deadlift during his training.If you like Rip, buy it. If you're on the fence about Rip, it might convince you to join the dark side, or you may be turned off. Either way, it's worth the read, if only to get you off of the fence.
Literally laughed out loud several times and learned invaluable information about a new hobby. I enjoyed the pictures and quotes, but mostly his call to educate yourself for your own benefit.
If you are reading this review, you are likely a serious lifter. Thus, try this book and you will enjoy "Rip's" pontifications on the major lifts, specific form, some very humorous observations on health habits, etc.This being my first book of his, I am not familiar with the others. Regardless, this is an enjoyable read and although some of the descriptions on form are somewhat dry, that's acceptable. He freely admits and warns us gentle readers. Bully for the author!Being a collection of essays, the book covers different subjects. As an instructional, it's worthy. As motivation to do squats, deadlifts, and presses (not seated), it's wonderful. Most importantly, he writes in an educated and direct style. If he were writing about cooking, you could detect that he lifts.If you don't squat or deadlift, you will be insulted by this book. And that's OK because Rip won't care.It's refreshing to read the musings of someone who's obviously done his homework, lifted hard, and managed to carve an interesting existence doing something he clearly enjoys.I hope to get a visitor's workout at Wichita Falls Athletic Club and hopefully, meet Rip!
Interesting book. If you've already read SS, a lot of this book will seem familiar. A lot of his personal thoughts/opinions are expanded upon here. It's nice in the sense that it drills in some of his opinions a bit more. I do see some people finding that a little boring though. Personally, I went through this book slowly whenever I wasn't busy, but didn't have enough time to "do" something.
Of Mr. Rippetoe's three books available on the Kindle (Starting Strength, Practical Programming, and Strong Enough?) this is my second favorite (Practical Programming is just too good). There is a fair bit of overlap between the books, so some might feel that Strong Enough? is not needed. However, the book has a lot merit and is a good pleasure read. Good for sustaining the lifting soul as we are bombarded by all of the silly fads that are a constant part of the weight training scene. I also feel that this is the most casual of the three books and as such gives the reader a better glimps at Mr. Rippetoe's writting style. I also really like how each chapter is a stand alone chapter, it makes skipping around very do-able.If you like lifting and you like the other books than you will probably enjoy this book just as much.
Most of these articles or ideas can be read in other Rip's books or articles, but it's good to have a single place to read most of them, especially if you haven't read them before and want to recommend Starting Strength ideas to someone new to this, or to re-read them and yet again try to understand them and remember them.

Because it's written for clinicians some might find it a bit dry, but because of that target audience it also includes lots of practical advice on HOW to make healthy lifestyle changes instead of just advising the reader to do so. If you're looking for explanations of WHY and HOW diet and exercise affect your health, this is the book for you. It includes lots of citations of source material if you want to dig deeper to draw your own conclusions. It was very educational for me.
Having had several serious health issues that necessitated a complete shift in my eating habits and the foods I eat, my Heart Doctor recommended this Diet. I needed as much solid information as possible for the Mediterranean Diet and this book appeared to be the answer. However, it was so difficult to navigate, I just gave up reading it. My biggest mistake was having paid for 1 day shipping. I was so eager.
I am a Sports Med/ Family Med physician in Fort Collins Colorado, and this book has been very helpful for me and my patients. It is well researched and specific. It is not just for clinicians. Fifteen of my patients have purchased this book just in the past few weeks. It is not difficult to read, and both scientists and intelligent non-scientists have liked it. The main thing about this book is that if more people ate and lived this way, the incidence of diseases like heart and peripheral artery disease and diabetes would plummet. I felt fantastic after only 2 weeks on this diet. Here is a quick summary:Part 1: Finally, a good definition of what the Mediterranean diet actually is!Part 2: Effects on diseases are explained nicely with great illustrations. I actually personally witnessed two amazing results. One patient dropped his LDL (bad cholesterol) by over 50 points, which is not supposed to be possible. Another went from an uncontrolled diabetic (new diagnosis) to non-diabetic in 3 months. These are just two people but it is suggestive to me that the diet plays a major role in disease control.Part 3: Weight loss and obesity. The problem is explained, and the conclusion is that being patient and thinking about this as a lifestyle rather than a "Diet" is the way to go.Part 4: Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats and Alcohol are addressed. Alcohol is not banned in this diet! Many non scientists will skip the pages with the molecular formulas but should read the section called "Fatty Acid Content of Various Foods" and the section on alcoholic drink equivalents at a minimum.Part 5: The rest of the book is very helpful and specific on how to adopt the diet/lifestyle and includes recipes!In short, if you were able to get this far in my review, or even if not, this book is for you. - Brad Abrahamson, MD
A concise, well written, evidence based guide to healthy eating. I am a practicing cardiologist and find the book extremely helpful, not only in my personal life but in my interaction with patients as well. With limited time during an office visit to cover everything involved in patient care, this book empowers me with a distillation of the medical literature to counsel my patients on what they should be focusing on in their attempt to eat a healthy diet. Research studies indicate what we as physicians say and recommend to patients can and do change behavior. I want to know what I tell my patients is backed up by the literature. A well-written book that balances the science behind the diet with easy readability. Excellent breakdown of why the diet works, just enough detail without being overwhelming. The recipes are fantastic!
In the short time since reading this book it has transformed my life and changed the way I see food. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to gain a better, clinical knowledge of how food plays a critical role in our health and well-being. The recipes are great too!
