Lencioni effectively delivers his leadership principles by packaging them into an engaging parable. I found myself nodding along as he revealed how his first four dysfunctions can manifest themselves. For this, he gets four stars.However, his fifth, and ultimate, principle - focusing on results - includes the “package deal†that associates individual goals with team failure. Or, put another way, he believes that an individual who is focused on her own goals will sacrifice the team for her own success. So, Lencioni says the individual must therefore sacrifice her personal goals for the team’s. By assuming this false dichotomy of sacrificing others to you or you to others, Lencioni misses a third approach that rejects sacrifice altogether: an approach that treats people as traders - voluntarily exchanging values to mutual benefit.For example, take his protagonist, Kathryn. She is hired to reform the leadership team and is well-compensated to do so. The company believes her leadership is good for the business. She accepts the position because she believes the job is good for her. She aligns her interests with the company’s. Both benefit. Neither subjugates nor sacrifices one side for the other. Yet, this stands in direct contrast to his own definition of his fifth dysfunction.Even with this (all-too-common) transgression, the rest of the book has more than enough value to overcome its shortcomings. Ultimately, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about leadership.
Lencioni shares simple truths about teams that should be more intuitively obvious to everyone. Yet, these things are very easy to grasp while being very difficult to actually practice ... without practice. This book focuses on what prevents a good team from forming and describe's what's needed. His companion book focuses on the implementation of these ideas but does not stand alone. If you only get one, get this one.The biggest problem I see is that both books are framed about C-level and top level executive teams. Very few mid-managers would have the leverage and ability to implement all of these principles at lower levels of the organization. It's definitely possible in some cases, but it would significantly more challenging. His principles are universally true, but his coaching is directed at executives.
I really enjoy this material, however, in my opinion, it's incomplete. It does an adequate job of explaining the 5 Dysfunctions, but unless you have some knowledge of many other tools and techniques, it does not offer any real methods for implementing the ideas. It's like they wrote this to introduce people to the Dysfunctions and expect them to go to the training to find out how to fix them. As a consultant and trainer, I have to supplement these concepts extensively to make them usable for clients. A good example is the first Dysfunction (Trust). While the book explains its importance and some basic ideas to increase trust, if you don't use an instrument such as the DISC, MBTI, SDI, or similar tool, you can't just improve trust. Different types of people have completely different issues in relation to overcoming trust issues.
This book has been on the “to read†list for quite some time now. I know it has been a popular book among managers for years, and I have enjoyed hearing Patrick Lencioni speak on several occasions, but for one reason or another, every year this book kept getting kicked down the list.Finally, I bought the book and was excited to read it. I opened it up, and a cold shiver went down my spine. When I saw that the first section of the book was titled “The Fable†and written like story, I rolled my eyes thinking I just wasted my money. But I pushed through, and to my surprise, I really enjoyed this book.I strictly read non-fiction. I have tried, but fiction does not appeal to me. I was tempted to read only the last section of the book which is in essay form, but I’m glad I didn’t. Lencioni can tell a convincing story while driving home the message without being cheesy or painfully obvious.I definitely think this book would be good for anyone who has to lead a team. Teamwork is incredibly difficult, however it can provide amazing results. I can attest that the five dysfunctions are real and a challenge to overcome.
This is standard reading for identifying dysfunction among team members. It's well written, very realistic, I think I've met each of the characters during the past 30 years of my career - and if the reader is open minded, they might learn more about themselves as a team member than anything else. It's eye opening insight if you work as part of a team, whether designated as a team or simply as a group that functions as a team. Simply reading the book will not solve the problems of a dysfunctional team, but will help expose a variety of behaviors embedded in humans that therefore exist in the dysfunctional teams to which they belong.
The author does an excellent job of presenting his team management philosophy through a fictional story of a real CEO hired to rescue a sinking ship. By putting the story first and showing principal's in action made them much easier to understand when they were broken down towards the end of the book.I also enjoyed how the author did not try to paint his style as an overnight fix. As the issues dealing with good conflict and team members holding each other accountable without a doubt will take lots of work to get a team to function in this manner. But its true it will be uncomfortable but as the book points out we all need to be headed in the right direction to be a standout in our industry. So yes its hard but in the end wouldn't it be worth it??

This was an excellent read, i was actually lead to it by reading another book which kept referencing this one. It has a lot of information about the time of slavery in America. Many of the ideas surrounding slavery are explored, some disproven, and some supported. Much of the information comes from plantation letters, newsletter articles, and notices in newspapers. There is an attempt by the author to be very objective and just stick with the facts.Some parts are dry, but those are the ones surrounding the statistics of what was grown, where, for how long, how certain crops were introduced, etc. This was done for a reason because a lot of it helps set the environment of the time that slavery was a main institution.Must have.
I read this book years ago and my copy was damaged when our sump pump misfunctioned! A mess! So, have recently retired and am re-reading some of my favorite books. I strongly recommend this book for all people; good historical account of slavery, with excellent source documentation. Takes you not only inside the economics of slavery but also the social and cultural aspects.
If you are a "lay reader" first venturing into a study of Southern slavery, then this may not be the place to start. However, for scholars, students, and those with a foundation in the topic, Stampp's "Peculiar Institution" is a must-read.Admittedly, his writing is deep, yet it is vital and relevant. Stamp is a myth-buster busting myths with first-hand quotes, statistics, and primary sources. For an understanding of the true, and tormenting, nature of American slavery, "Slavery in the Ante-Bellum South" is an excellent resource.Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming "Sacred Friendships: Listening to the Voices of Women Soul Care-Givers and Spiritual Directors."
In the mid-1950s, Jim Crow was still commonplace in the South, Brown vs. Board of Education made integration mandatory, and blacks refused to move to the "back of the bus," leading the United States Supreme Court to condemn Alabama's segregated public transportation. Morrison Professor of History Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley, and a specialist in nineteenth-century history, Kenneth M. Stampp wrote The Peculiar Institution; Slavery in the Ante-bellum South during the infancy of the civil rights movement. Stampp's book refutes the Gone With the Wind view of the paternalistic slaveowner and his "cheerful and acquiescent" bondsmen. (86) Southern slaveowners rationalized the ownership of black human beings for more than a century, and with greater vigor as the institution increasingly fell from acceptance in more liberal societies. Pro-slavery writers used "religious, historical, scientific, and sociological arguments to demonstrate that slavery was a positive good for both Negroes and whites." (383) Stampp assumes the burden of proof, and meets each of these arguments head-on with irrefutable evidence taken from first person sources: inventories, diaries, newspaper advertisements and editorials, slave narratives, and the personal letters of slaveowners. He finds an "important form of protest" in the advertisements for runaway slaves, (110) "managerial inefficiency" not "evidence of the unprofitability of slavery" in the account books of debt-ridden planters, (391) and heartrending humanity in the letter of one slavewoman who, sold away, begged for her daughter, Jennie, to be restored to her, after their separation. (242) While debaters might quibble about the respective benefits slaves and slaveowners derived from slavery, there can be little debate about the mercenary benefits of the system. Stampp reserves his strongest arguments for his penultimate chapter, Profit and Loss. Slavery's defenders protested that slavery was unprofitable, in an effort to strengthen their claims of benevolent paternalism. The author's careful review of "the business records which many masters kept, and in the reports which some prepared for various publications," he finds slave labor produced handsome profits, even for the small owners with just one or two slaves. The average slaveholder had moderate expenses, "the annual tax on able-bodied slaves was usually between fifty and seventy-five cents," and with necessary items, such as "Negro shoes," selling for a dollar or less, and annual food costs of between $7.50 and $15.00 per slave, the maintenance of a captive labor force seldom exceeded $35.00 a year per slave to the plantation owner. (405-406) Profits ranged from a very comfortable $250 a year per hand in the thriving southwest of the 1850s, to the Deep South where slaveholders seldom failed to reap returns of seven to ten percent annually. The bottom line is slavery was profitable, and continued to be profitable until emancipation. If free labor, or divestment of slaves and land, had proven itself to be a more profitable venture, surely the "peculiar institution" would have found few adherents. A more honest book on the slave experience had likely never been written when Kenneth Stampp took up the task. In his well-written and exhaustive history, he re-affirms the historian's "article of faith that knowledge of the past is a key to understanding the present." In the preface, written in 1955, Stampp acknowledges that "American Negroes . . . still strive to break what remains of the caste barriers first imposed upon them in slavery days." (vii) More than fifty years later this book is still relevant, and deserves to be called a classic of antebellum American History.

Bodnar and Cohen do a great job translating the myriad of content pieces on social media into crisp “how-to’s†for B2B lead generation and lead nurturing.The book, in my opinion, qualifies academically as a supplementary reading for undergraduate level programs based on the following:1) The authors provide a broad perspective of how a sorely neglected B2B domain can benefit from social media.2) The “how-to†approach and helpful tips provides undergraduate students with a useful hands-on tutorial.3) Both authors have exceptional expertise in marketing automation and inbound marketing.4) Unlike many other books that scatter their functional perspectives across many marketing objectives, this one is focused and organized around B2B lead generation.
I took a chance on this book, going against my better judgment. I usually never buy a book with only glowing reviews. So hopefully, this objective review will help some avoid the same mistake.I bought this book because of Jon Yoffie's review. Read that review. It's informative. But don't buy the book.And the bit on calulating ROI is bogus. Here it is. Lifetime Customer Value MINUS Cost of acquiring a customer EQUALS: ROI.There's a whole lot more to calulating marketing ROI than that. Cost per lead, Cost per sale, etc. Look at any good direct marketing book for that.The main problem with this book it is vague and general. It seems to be written more for corporate types. So if you are an entrepreneur or small business owner I would definitely skip it.You don't need a book to tell you to use content to drive traffic to your site.Also, I usually never comment on production values...but this is a hard cover book. Nice on the outside. Ashame that the publisher was so cheap with the paper quality and print on the inside of the book.I'm returning this one.

Baby Lisa and the Amish Second Chance by Sarah Miller. This is a outstanding book. It has a little of everything in it (drama, death, divorce, reclaiming love of parents, romance, love of a child). I received an ARC of this book from the author, Sarah Miller, and this is my voluntary and honest review. I love reading books about the Amish, and I really liked this one. Jeremiah left his Amish community, married an Englisher, and had a girl named Lisa. He hadn't been back to see his Amish family until his Dad was dying. He was welcomed back to the community after his wife divorced him. His divorce forced him to realize that he had a true love that he had left behind five years earlier. He was torn between his Amish life and being with his daughter who his ex wife had custody of. This book is easily read in one sitting and it is well written. I loved the ending.
