After starting this book, I had serious doubts that I could continue. The names, alone, were confusing enough. But, continue I did. I am old enough to remember some of the story, but the textbook like style of writing was sometimes off-putting. In the end, however, I have to give the author his due, if only for his persistence. The afternotes put another whole view in my mind and, if nothing else, I am glad that I continued, but also glad it is finished.
A record of greed, vanity, injured pride, entitlement, and wasted lives. Of all the people mentioned in this book, from principals to lawyers, to judges, not one of them achieved the real success of a fruitful, happy, orderly family life and a peaceful, productive life work. As the Bible says, The love of money is a root of all evil.
Tons of insider detail and conversation describing the turmoil that racked and ultimately wrecked J. Paul Getty's huge oil legacy. Takeover artists, Wall Street hawks, and industry giants play key roles in the 1970s-80s environment that made Getty Oil a target. Steve Coll's narrative is most readable and compelling--only a few necessary side trips to explain important financial issues.
Not nearly as well known as Barbarians at the gate or similar works, but that’s unfortunate. Writing is excellent and a fiction writer would be hard pressed to come up with a plot sharing this level of intrigue.
A fascinating story for those who enjoy reading about the back room dealings and discussions that take place in boardrooms and hotels. We learn that the ultra wealthy are just as picky, simple and stubborn as the rest of us. The only difference is that the significance of their decisions are measured in $Billions.
The story behind the headline is too often a boring one. But not this book. Very detail look at what was a big business story from the 80s.
...then you will definitely enjoy this book. LBO intrigue over Getty Oil but with a surprise twist at the end.
Very interesting historical & business read.
