Beautifully written travelogue, truly inspirational to all those brave souls wanting to travel and explore the world. Good book to read definitely.
Great book not to be missed. If you love Africa you will enjoy the book; if you have no idea of Africa, you will have it on your bucket list
Please write about Ethiopia too we have a lot to be written from Axum to LA-libel..... even our diversified culture is a lot to be said about.
It is very interesting book which is based on true story. I really admiring how Meskerem is a brave lady. All female who love visiting countries need to read.
Oh my! the adventures she's been through: That time she was accosted by an AK47-toting man drugged to his eyeballs while stranded on a night bus that had broken down. The night when her best option was to sleep in a hidden shack at the back of a bar, at the suggestion of three men she had just met. Other stories will have you in stitches, like the time a checkpoint officer searched through her belongings, seized her box of tampons and declared them to be "spying devices". You can't make that stuff up.I thought that the fact she had grown up in Africa had made things a bit easier for her, but actually, it was the opposite. In many places, she had to contend with a lot of people doubting her, criticising her, discouraging her, blaming her even, for following her truth and being her own woman. All of this, while struggling with the fresh loss of her mother to cancer. The memoir shows great storytelling skills, mixing just the right balance of emotions, insights, facts and travelogue. It described well the joy and despair of travel in faraway lands. It always stayed interesting and of course, made me want to go visit Africa.
My favorite travel Journal of an African/Abyssinian Nomad! In Abyssinian Nomad, Maski takes us on a journey from her perspective as a child to making her dream real. Maski is an Ethiopian grow up in a strict culture that set the rule on what women should do and don't. She is courageous, adventurous, and brave young woman who had to struggle with following her heart and keep the societal norms. Her journal gives an honest insight into her love and confusion on making the right choice. This story is also about a fear of losing loved ones and bring meaning out of it. It was so fascinating to read how she balances it all.Her journey took place ten years ago, and I couldn't be able to imagine how that can be possible. At the time one can easily imagine the mobile accessibility, the internet connectivity and awareness of people of traveling. It is a nightmare to think of, but she did it fearlessly. In every country she visited, the couch-surfing experiences, having conversations with total strangers, the relationship with Brian and the emotion she went through with her mom’s health and how she found ways to heal herself is so wonderful. For an Ethiopian mother, I understand how her mom felt about it. Despite that she let her and listened to her stories, that’s being a super mom.Truly though, this travel journal was enlightening, brimming with emotion and I love it when an African woman pushed the limit.“At the moment, I realized how much pain and worry I sometimes inflicted on people unintentionally, just because I wanted to follow my heart and do things most people from my culture didn’t know were possible, or simply didn’t think were necessary, or just considered plain crazy.â€This passage had me thinking what changes now on peoples attitude? My mind heart was fully engaged while reading everything Maski went through to pursue her dream real and everyone who took part in the journey.“Then they start telling me about the dreams they have had or the things they wanted to do. But its more than that: they are downloading something from the deep place and giving it sounds words textures and feelings while sharing their stories.â€now I understand there is no need to worry where such a connection will take place, nor with that kind of person, be it man, woman, young or old; sometimes that connection can only happen when we are not able to talk because of the language barrier.â€Right now I am having a nostalgia of those countries!
I just finished reading Abyssinia Nomad, Maskarm Haile’s travel memoir. Maskarm is a prolific writer who has successfully documented her travels throughout the largest chunk of the African continent while narrating personal stories with painstaking details. In Abyssinia Nomad, Maskarm has intertwined her emotional journey with her physical rendezvous through the eastern part of the African continent, from Cape of Good Hope in South Africa to Cairo in Egypt and everything along the way. Abyssinia Nomad is a story of triumph and perseverance of a young African woman who is able to successfully overcome cultural and societal barriers to attain personal goals. If you are interested in a trip through the African continent while enjoying a human story along the way, Maskarm Haile’s Abyssinia Nomad is the perfect book for you.
This beautifully written book allows one to simultaneously go on two journeys... one, viscerally accompanying the author as she explores the diversity and great wonders of the eastern African continent; and the other following her internal struggles as she confronts loss and questions of identity. It's wonderful to read a first-hand account of places that are unfortunately so often portrayed negatively in the media, and getting the important and refreshing perspective of someone from the continent sharing her experience of travelling through it.
