Wow, there is a LOT of information in this book. I really think that there is something for everyone in this guide. It is well written, well laid out, and easy to find what you are looking for. I have used it to plan my herb garden. There is an index of herbs that is absolutely amazing in the detailed information and the amount of herbs it covers. I am looking forward to using some of my home grown herbs for everything from beauty (which there are a lot of recipes) to health for my whole family. I am new to this whole world of herbal remedies, but Rosemary Gladstar's book is definitely an easy way to get started. The recipes are easy to follow. Yes, there are some herbs I can't grow, but there are also many recipe alternatives that I can. I am really happy with this purchase, and it makes a great addition to my library.I actually took this book in to work today for a few of my co-workers to thumb thru. Already two people have decided to order their own copy. I think that is a good indicator. A great value for the price for sure. I have just started learning about herbalism and homeopathic remedies. This book is well written and provides very easy to follow recipes for a wide range of items from tinctures, to face cleaner, to everyday teas for optimum health. I have enjoyed reading ever page and learned a great deal about how to improve my nervous system for better living. I like that the author gives you a base recipe and encourages you to experiment to find the perfect combination for you. It is written in a positive, sharing and encouraging manner.I would warn you that in order to make all the different items you would need a HUGE pantry full of ingredients. There is a picture in the book on page 22 of the book that shows Rosemary in a room with a wall lined full of mason jars of herbs, I pretty much feel like that is what you need to be able to make all these things. I have slowly started building my stock and I think I will need an addition on my house by the time I am through. That being said I think that is probably the case for most people who get into herbalism and it will be well worth it to avoid a bunch of trips to the doctor and pharmacy bills.
Rosemary Gladstar is the most trusted herbalist in America for good reason. This book compiles all of her best recipes and information from her other books in one small, easy to use, helpful book. We've been using her elderberry syrup recipe to treat the flu for years now (most of the recipes on the web are based on her recipe). If any of our family comes down with the flu (which is pretty rare anyway), they're generally much better by the second day and completely over it by the third if we do elderberry syrup. I refer to the book often and hope to use even more of her recipes in the future.
I bought this book in hopes to learn some hearbal healing. I've been interested in herbal naturopathic medicine for quite some time, in an effort to find remedies to the many ailments my family and friends suffer from. In my family we've always gone yo the traditional western doctors, but in the past few years they have been failing us. In reality they have failed us for much longer I just didn't do anything about it. I finally got fed up ad decided I wanted to attend college and become a certified herbologist and midwife. So while I am doing my studies in those areas I decided to buy many different herbal healing books.This book was one of them.I give this book 5 stars because it is superbly written and well thought out. Each recipe is very detailed and useful. Many of the ailments mentioned and treated with natural medicine are ones my family and I suffer from, a few examples would be infertility, irregular periods, pain management, sexual impotence, headaches, common colds and flu, constipation, indigestion and so many many more. I can't even begin to name all the recipes in this book. Rosemary not only cover your basic everyday ailments but she also covers your more unusual ailments, one which my hubby had struggled with for months now and has been to embarrassed to go to a doctor about was actually mentioned in this book, I was able to help mix up an herbal remedy for him using the recipe in this book. I also have a child which like many kids has her own set of childhood issues, this book has many remedies for kids too and I can't wait to try some out and see how they work, especially the cold and flu remedies as we usually treat those with your conventional medicine, but now I really want to see how effective these remedies are. Rosemary does make sure to mention that these recipes were never intended to treat or diagnose an illness and it is no replacement for actual care from a dr. However I do believe this book will be a very effective tool in treating common issues and if your like me I think its a perfect companion to aid with conventional medicine, I've come to the conclusion in life that conventional medicine has its place and can be beneficial, but for common ailments the earth mother gas given us all we need and its best to try those medicines she offers us before we turn to the more invacive medicine offered in modern times.In all I would highly recommend this book. I will be keeping this book close at hand.One more thing Rosemary put together many herbal concoctions for a "hot date" night, there are recipes for love liquor, good life wine, men's long life elixir and energy balls, all of these recipes help the male libido as well as energize both male and females for a very romantic evening. I though that was a very nice addition to the book since as a married woman who is married to an older man I know how sometimes not everything wants to work like its supposed to either due to medications or just the days stresses, so this for me was a really wonderful addition and I honestly can say I did not expect it but it was a lovely surprise. I think the men folk will enjoy those recipes for sure who doesn't want to have a romantic evening with a loved one.So that is my review. Thank you Miss Gladstar for this lovely book I do believe it is one I will holdonto forever.
I LOVE her notes and explanations. Well put. I own more of her books. She's just well rounded. A little of humor is in it. She has a section that lists the different herbs that are ideal for women children men.
This is a great herb book for someone who doesn't know where to start and also for someone looking for more recipes/ideas. There is a lot of information in the book. I like that there are multiple recipes for similar things because I don't always have the less common herbs at home and it's nice to have another recipe to choose from. I started making my own tinctures after reading this. There are good instructions for dosing and also warnings telling you when not to take a certain herb. Highly recommend!

Pros:-Seems to be the most current guide for SF as of my purchase date (July 2011).-LP has always been my go-to guide for both domestic and international travel. Its recommendations may not always be the best, but I think LP is the most consistently reliable guidebook. I appreciate that LP also segments restaurants/bars/accomodations by budget/midrange/high end so you can choose yourself rather than other guidebooks typically gear the entire book toward one type of traveler (Rough Guide for budget, Dorling Kindersley for higher end).-Guide features a pull-out map which was helpful.Cons:-I did not see (and I could have missed it) any public transportation maps, such as the underground or bus system. Some underground and trolley stops were marked on the pull-out maps but there was not seperate public transport guide/maps. I used the GPS function on my smartphone for bus routes, etc.-I agree with the previoius reviewer's (J. Wong's) comment about comparing LP to Trip Advisor. I have consistently found that the top Trip Advisor choices for a city are not featured in LP.
Badly organized and uninspiring.
Added little or nothing useful to the standard publication on SF. Seems to be an attempt to put out yet another book to sell. I threw it out.
In preparing for a trip to Hungary, I examined thoroughly the choices for Budapest.My favorite guidebook series has been Lonely Planet, and the Budapest Lonely Planet is fairly helpful. Although it doesn't give as thorough a treatment on accomodations, the book gives a lot of travel hints and secret. I found its facts for the visitors to be the most helpful, and the maps (placed at the very back of the book) to be the easiest to use. The frommer book, on the other hand, put the maps close to the section of the book referring to it. The organization of LP makes it easiest to use in the field; they tend to have the best background, history and cultural information. LP was particularly good about including rules, regulations and things like closing times. ON the other hand, there are not many photos, and they don't plan as many walking tours as the frommer book does. I didn't find the written descriptions that engaging, although the cultural background seemed well done.The Frommer's Budapest book (3rd edition) gave the best information about finding and choosing accomodations, but the book has no pictures and aside from a nice subway cover on the inside cover, the maps are hard to find and not very easy to use. Frommer's gives excellent information about prices and shops and restaurants; it's almost a guide to buying things rather than a tour book. I didn't find it particularly thorough about travel information, customs, or those sorts of details. That is not entirely fair. They have a nice section in the front a kind of "best of" list for things in budapest. The nice thing about the book is that it recommends things to do if you have only one day, three days or a week. They also suggested some itineraries for walking tours. The Fodor's Budapest pocket reference is drab and not full of much information. Don't get it. The Eyewitness Travel Guide on Budapest by Tadeusz Olszanski is the most eye-catching and the least helpful. It contains lots of graphics and diagrams and maps, and not too much information. The multitude of pictures are helpful in describing architecture, geography and art. On the other hand, its information on accomodations is very limited. Don't get me wrong; it's a beautiful and interesting book; it just is not as helpful as the other three. And it is two years old. I'm not necessarily saying that this book is bad, merely that it may not help you very much on the excursion. The Budapest: A Critical Guide by Andras Torok, 4th edition is a less complete and more personal account of things to do in Budapest. The other books were like encyclopedias, but this book was just a few personal recommendations about things to do and places to stay. Also, the writing for this book seems to be better than the other books. If you already are a little familiar with Budapest, but just want to learn about new and undiscovered places, this might be an excellent book. It certainly covers most of the bases, but it just doesn't try to list a huge number of accomodations or restaurants. I ended up buying the Frommer's and a used copy of the Eyewitness travel guide.
I've seen several reviews for other Lonely Planet Discover guides where people seemed unpleasantly surprised by what they got. Discover guides are not the classic Lonely Planet guides; they're a new series that was started a couple of years ago, and the originals are still being published as well.Lonely Planet describes the classic style as "the original; comprehensive; adventurous", while the Discover guides are "best-of; photo-packed; inspirational". In other words, the Discover guides don't have as much information as the original guides. What they do have is a lot of photographs and an attractive format that highlights don't-miss attractions. There's enough overlap in content that you probably won't want to buy both guides, and choosing between them will come down to individual preferences.One place where the Discover guide cuts back is on accommodations; there are only six pages of hotel listings, plus two pages of more general information. I was perfectly happy with this, since I had already chosen accommodations independently and didn't need a lot of hotel details taking up space in (and adding weight to) my travel guide. And the Discover guide does have a useful chart comparing the pros and cons of different neighbourhoods of San Francisco from the perspective of where to stay: whether they're close to sights, easy to access by public transportation, active or quiet at night, etc. This is more than enough for me when I'm just looking for a decent place to stay in a North American city; I expect that pretty much any hotel will turn out to be acceptable. It's only when I'm travelling farther afield to places where I might face language or cultural barriers that I worry more about every detail. I don't know whether I'd buy a Discover guide for, say, Egypt, but for San Francisco it worked for me.I've also found that I really appreciate the photo-heavy, highlights-focused approach when I'm just visiting a city for a short time. I might read a travel guide in great detail if I'm going somewhere for three weeks, but three days is a completely different matter. I want to be shown top attractions in an appealing format, and quickly; I'm not going to invest more time in reading the guidebook than I'll be spending on the trip. The Discover San Francisco guide does exactly what I want: I can quickly flip through it to get a sense of what the top sights are and decide what I actually want to see. The photos help a lot with this, and the various attractions also seem to be split up more into individual chunks, rather than listed as part of a paragraph, which again makes it friendlier for skimming rather than sitting down and reading.I've so far used this for a day trip to San Francisco with hardly any planning, and it worked out well; I was satisfied with the attractions that I saw and the limited time that I had to put into doing research beforehand. We didn't even plot out our whole day in advance, but chose a couple of major sights and then used the guidebook to hit other highlights nearby. If that's the kind of trip that you're looking for--a quick visit without a lot of advance planning--then this may be the book for you. But if you want to research every detail ahead of time, then you'll probably prefer the more thorough classic guide.Even for my purposes, this Discover guide wasn't perfect, though. For one thing, I would have liked a transit map or some other useful reference on the back inside cover, instead of just advertisements for other Lonely Planet guides. I also would have liked a reference section of maps at the back of the book, instead of just the pull-out map. The book itself is great, but the kindle edition does not have a working table of contents, which makes this book very hard to use.
BIG THICK BOOK!!! Talk about information, I use this as more of a guide for ideas and commands than I do a read through. Has a decent set up to powershell at the beginning that explains some basics but then it jumps right into it.Perfect for someone who is dabbling into powershell and has some base knowledge but wants to learn way more.Only downside is it doesn't cover anything in PS4 or the upcoming PS5 since it was put together for PS3
A great Powershell Reference book - very organized and clearly explains the scripts provided. Wouldn't be my first choice in regards to a beginner book as it covers the basics very quickly, however, I feel this is a must own for Powershell users who intend to further their scripting skills.
This book is probably not for a programming novice, but it makes an excellent reference book that's full of examples.
Great book for intermediate level. Helped out well with some scripts I had to write. I will say that still I find myself going online to look at more examples of code, but still it provides a solid reference.
I got this book because I was interested in learning a new scripting language -- this book is great for that. It doesn't have any theory in it (as the name suggests -- cookbook), and just gives you small snippets of code for common tasks. I entered the 2012 scripting games earlier this year and this book (along with online resources) helped me do rather well in them. I find myself flipping through it randomly sometimes and finding interesting applications that I never would have considered. It's a great resource for new Powershell ideas. Highly recommended.

Sweet story of a long distance, open-water swimmer and a lost baby whale. It's really more of an essay. What I liked was that the author actually lived in my neighborhood in Los Alamitos and would be seen often, walking her dogs. It was fun knowing exactly where the story took place, since those were my haunts when I was growing up. That said, I loved reading about Lynn's description of swimming, the ocean, and all the senses related to that. She described it all very well. It certainly is not a "meaty" book, but a great story of a rare encounter with a whale.
I bought this without knowing what I was getting, because my grandson's name is Grayson, but when I read it I was charmed by the story and the beautiful descriptions of the ocean and marine life. I'll have to buy it again in hardback, because this should be a permanent part of my grandson's library.
Ms. Cox, a long distance swimmer, was training one morning in the Pacific Ocean when she came across a baby gray whale. This short book details her interaction with the calf and her efforts to help it find its mother (which, thankfully, does occur). Her descriptions of her time with the whale are extraordinary and the details of ocean life will leave you mesmerized.
I couldn't put the book down. I was locked into the story and as Lynn Cox beautifully wrote with such picturesque words I felt I was there. I could see the colors , smell the ocean and hear the sounds the deep ocean sang. Awesome

I read this book years ago and truly loved it. I am so excited to be buying a new copy now to share with my daughter. I can not wait to share this story with her. It's about compassion, perseverance, and grace.
One of my favorite books! Lynne Cox's experience as a teen is a wonderful example that caring and love have no boundaries, and that the world is so much bigger than just ourselves. So many life lessons explored in one chance meeting.
Reading "Grayson" is ....like Ms. Cox's 'Swimming to Antarctica" so wordy and stretched that the reader may give up before finishing. I did finish Grayson because I wanted to know the ending. I had even thought, when first reading, that I would give this book to my daughter who teaches Reading to fifth graders. But....I decided against it for the reason that I know they would love the first but really get bogged down before the final page. It's a great story but could have been condensed into perhaps 10 pages.

Nine Irish Lives explores 27 fascinating people. The “Nine†reflected in the title are extraordinary Irish migrants whose history illustrates how America was built on the back of immigrants. Eight more Irish descendants tell those first immigrants’ stories weaved in with their own experiences. One more is author Mark Bailey. He begins the book with an essay briefly touching his own experiences and worldview. But mostly he profiles another nine Irishmen whose death sentences were commuted. Those nine, like the other 18 profiled, went on to greatness. One became prime minister of Australia and another was elected governor of Minnesota.My favorite story was Rosie O’Donnell’s profile of Margaret Haugherty, whose parents died of Yellow Fever when she was nine. Rosie had a hard childhood, too, and sees Margaret in herself. After losing her husband and only child, Margaret began working at orphanages, and then started buying cows—40 of them. She started a dairy business and used all proceeds to provide for orphans. And when women were banned from walking alone during the civil war—with punishment being placed into prostitution for Union soldiers—Margaret convinced a Union general “amused by her courage†to allow her to cross town alone to get flour so she could feed hungry people. She donated $600,000, which is the equivalent of $16 million today to orphans.My next favorite story was Mark Shriver teaching the mantra “He ain’t heavy father, he’s m’brother,†the story of Father Edward Flanagan of Boys town. He opened the first biracial orphanage for boys. He created a boys-town band, orchestra, and choir, and he seized the power of radio to promote support for the orphanage. Babe Ruth visited several times. Even President Roosevelt would meet with Flanagan for advice about juvenile issues. Hollywood made a movie about Boys Town. And ultimately Boys Town was incorporated as its own village with a boy elected mayor. Father Flannigan was recognized with improving conditions for juveniles around the world—starting with the United States and then of course Ireland.Tom Hayden profiled Thomas Addis Emmet, who was exiled and imprisoned in France where he survived on fetid water and bread in a tiny dark cell. Once released, Emmet became a prominent lawyer in America where he fought for the Irish and other downtrodden. He defended a black slave and argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. We learn that at the turn of the 19th century, like today, lots of antiimmigrant sentiment prevailed especially against the Irish, and especially more against Catholics (including from Alexander Hamilton who wasn’t as pro-immigrant as Lin Manuel Miranda portrays him on Broadway).Terry Golway profiles Mary Harris Jones—Mother Jones—a labor champion who survived the great Chicago fire and took the cause to help the common man. Jill McDonough helps us experience Al Cashier’s world. A transgender man—born a woman named Jennie—he became a war hero for the Union army at age 19. Five-foot tall, and relentless, his army comrades called him “Chubb†because they mistook his tits for fat. Author McDonough, a gay woman, questioned whether the soldiers really knew the truth about Cashier because she thought he looked like all the women McDonough wanted to get with in college.Filmmaker Michael Moore profiles SS McClure, the original muckraking journalist whose publications told the truth about the powerful. After immigrating to Indiana from Ireland, McClure founded McClure’s magazine, which featured articles from the likes of Mark Twain and earned more from advertising than any magazine in the world at the time. McClure’s magazine took on politics and power for just 15 cents per issue when fancy magazines were 35 cents. Michael Moore discusses the deterioration of journalism and how that impacts politics today. McClure’s journalism inspired working and middle-class people to stand up and do something. We need an SS McClure today!Actor Pierce Brosnan—you know, James Bond—profiled Rex Ingram, a sculptor and silent film maker. Pierce himself a painter, juxtaposes Rex’s life with his own, including similar childhoods in Ireland, lack of taking to formal education because of their artistic souls, and losing parents and grandparents very young. After meeting Thomas Edison’s son who had a motion picture studio in Brooklyn, Rex started as an actor and set builder and ended as the most successful silent filmmaker in history. This one has a sad ending, which Pierce thinks Rex would want told accurately.Novelist Kathleen Hill profiles Maeve Brennan, the rare female writer at the New Yorker magazine when it was the biggest in the world and male dominated. She called herself a “traveler in residence†because most of her adult life she couch-surfed, spending every penny she made until she died destitute but leaving a legacy in her writing.Finally, we learn about Niall O’Dowd who is still alive today. This story is told by two writers whose lives we do not learn anything about. O’Dowd was an illegal immigrant who went on to publish prominent Irish publications in the United States. Bill Clinton called him the voice of Irish America for this generation and recruited O’Dowd to negotiate peace in the Northern Ireland war as a secret American ambassador. When Clinton toured Ireland with O’Dowd, Clinton called it called it the best two days of his presidency.So many compelling stories—27 of them—inside of less than 300 pages. Nowhere else will you find this much history and rich content about fascinating people in one place. All of them Irish Americans. Each of them extraordinary. I highly recommend Nine Irish Lives.
I loved the book and would highly recommend others reading it.
This is a brilliant and inspired book -- a real page-turner. A celebration of the Irish, and timely reminder of the contributions of all immigrants to this country. I highly recommend for the Irish and non-Irish alike. But I am Irish, so I really liked it! Perfect book for St. Patrick's Day.
This is a very odd and slanted collection of essays about "prominent" Irish people. This is one of those "beat you over the head with progressivism" books. But seriously, what can you expect from contributors like Tom Hayden, Rosie O'Donnell, and Michael Moore? My review probably won't even show up here on Amazon because I bought my copy off the remainder table of a big-box store, but I felt that I needed to try to warn people. Don't buy this if you are interested in the Irish or Irish-American History or if you are looking for a gift to get someone interested in those topics. This book is suitable only for those who are focused on the progressive narrative and want to read material that confirms their bias. It's an anthology, so the writing is very uneven but, given the celebrity status of most of the writers, it's a safe bet that most of the pieces were ghost written anyway. This is a train-wreck of a book. Look elsewhere if you are interested in the lives of prominent Irishmen.
Moving, funny, and smart! Extremely entertaining. I feel more connected to my heritage and the importance of the Irish in America.
Each of the stories in this book makes wonderful reading; however, this is truly a case of the whole is bigger than the sum of its parts. The stories in this book are a testament to honor, courage and service. The stories also remind us that men and women from far away helped to define and breathe life into core American values.
