GREY GARDENS fans (and fanatics!) as well as newcomers to the Beales' saga will find lots to love in this fascinating memoir that reads, in many ways, like a fairy tale. A young boy is drawn to a spooky old house, where he meets two eccentric recluses, who initiate him into the ways of life, art, and culture -- proving that you don't have to leave the house to travel around the world. Jerry Torre tells his story in a heartfelt, sincere, and honest manner -- and his willingness to appear vulnerable and tell it like it is (and was) is remarkable and special. Both Big Edie and Little Edie are portrayed with affection and candor -- with many behind-the-scenes moments that shed new light what happened before, during, and after the Maysles Brothers shot GREY GARDENS. In this fairy tale, a boy sought a home and family -- and found them with mother Edith Bouvier Beale and sister Little Edie Beale on Long Island at Grey Gardens.
The info Jerry remembers about the Beale's is quite interesting. The time line is slightly different from Lois Wright's, "My life at Grey Gardens". Who was there, why, when and how etc. How much did Jerry & Lois overlap, did he really live there, did he really call Big Edie Mother??! Some of the info is conflicting with Lois's account, so it's hard to know who was correct, having two different perspectives I suppose it's normal it doesn't all line up. But I now understand why the other "suggested" books came up when looking to purchase this book... It's Jerry's memoir, and as we know he was "Quite an amazing character". Jerry shares how he ends up in EH, his damaging childhood experiences and all about Jerry's escapades as an adult living in NYC. It another glimpse into the mystery surrounding Grey Gardens and I'm glad Jerry shared his story.
A surprising read unexpectedly revealing of the kind of details you rarely find in an autobiography. Author has his heart open on his sleeve to us the reader in a way where there are so many heart felt surprises throughout. This is for anyone interested in a unique reading experience that is rich with exciting life adventure experiences, not just for the the fans of Grey Gardens and/or the Beales', but for everyone.
If you are a fan of Edith and Edie Bouvier Beale you will Love this book.....Jerry Torre did a fantastic job of telling his time spent with them....Grey Gardens forever!!!
Mr. Jerry Torre writes a beautiful and inherently elegant memoir that magnificently transports the reader to the mysterious and iconic Grey Gardens. Mr. Torre also weaves his life story into the book like no other writer I’ve seen before. At the end, it is sweetly and clearly evident why the great Bouvier-Beale family adopted him as one of their own.
I don’t usually write reviews but I felt compelled to do so for this book. I have always had a fascination for the Beales and Gray Gardens and have to admit that I didn’t know anything about Jerry until I read this book. After reading the book I felt as if I knew Jerry personally because of the honest and open way he presents himself in the book. He admits that because he was so young he was nieve to a lot of the situations that were taking place at Grey Gardens yet he presents them in a caring and compassionate way based on what his feelings were at the time.Even if you are not familiar with the story and background of Gray Gardens you will enjoy this book based solely on Jerry’s own life and experiences as a gay man in a time and place when most gay men were not accepted for who they were. Yet Jerry was fortunate to literally stumble upon Edith and Edie who also didn’t fit the mold society puts on those that may be different and forged a relationship with them that is both endearing and heartwarming. This book will not only entertain but help you to understand how important it is to accept people for who they are without judgement. Jerry is a humble man that can teach us all about what it means to be human.
Thank you Jerry for sharing your life and your perspective on Grey Gardens. I feel like I know you and love you now that I have a better understanding of how you cared for the Beales. This book deserves 5 stars, but I am rather reluctantly giving it 4 for the poor editing and lack of proof reading. I hope you will have maybe an English major correct the many errors in the book before printing more releases. It's so distracting to be reading along and to come upon a word that is wrong or doesn't belong in the sentence. That being said, I loved it, couldn't put it down, was sorry when it was done and wonder now about how Jerry is doing.
I liked this book, the authors voice is clear and direct. I also noticed some missed proofreading opportunities (but I can forgive them, they show a documentary like realism) and wished for more details in many parts, but overall gained additional insight into Jerry's life and the time he spent with the Beale's. if you find the story of Grey Gardens fascinating like I do you should definitely read this book to expand your understanding.
